CLIENT: Barrister, I have a small issue for court. I want you to represent me.
BARRISTER: What exactly happened?
CLIENT: “Nothing serious. We went for a bûrial. I followed someone who has a hot temper. Somebody prôvôked him… and he shôt the person. I didn’t even know he had a gûñ. Everybody there knows I didn’t take part.
BARRISTER: its not small, My professional fee is … Naira.
CLIENT: Jesus! Just to represent me in this small matter? All you need to do is tell the court I didn’t partake. Why that kind of price?”
BARRISTER: “That is my fee. But there is good news, the law permits you to represent yourself. You can tell the court you’ll handle your çàse personally.
CLIENT: “Ah! That’s why I always say you’re a good man. I’ll represent myself. Not that I don’t have the money but it’s too much for just explaining that I didn’t join the quarrel.”

Weeks later, a strange number called, BARRISTER: “Hello, who am I speaking with?”
CLIENT: “It’s me, sir… the one you told I could represent myself.”
BARRISTER: “Oh, my brother. How are you?”
CLIENT: “I’m not fine. They çôñvicted me. Life imprîsóñmeñt.”
CLIENT: I for say make God will pûñîsh you for that advice but I still need you. Please help me appeal. I will pay the amount you mentioned.”
BARRISTER: “Appeal is not trial. It is more technical. My fee is five times that amount.”
CLIENT: “I will pay. My brother will see you tomorrow. Please help me.”
BARRISTER: “Alright. Until then, stay safe.”
CLIENT: “There is nothing like safe here, Barrister.

FROM THE COURTROOM TONIGHT

AKWA IBOM FACTIONAL VILLAGE HEAD, TWO OTHERS SENTENCED TO DEATH FOR MURDER OVER PALM FRUITS

By Harrison Essien

Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Uyo has sentenced a factional village head of Ikot Ebita in Nsit Atai Local Government Area, Chief Effiong Okon Ukime, alongside his Secretary, Sylvanus Edet Effiong, and his Chief Security Officer, Ubong Udo Okpon, to death by hanging for the murder of 28-year-old Archibong Edem Bassey.

The court found the three men guilty of murder following the brutal killing of the deceased over a dispute concerning palm fruit harvesting rights within the village.

BACKGROUND TO THE CRISIS

The crisis in Ikot Ebita village began after the death of the substantive village head, Chief John Nyong Ekanem.

Upon his burial, two aspirants emerged to contest the vacant stool:
•Chief Aniedi Etim Ikpe (erstwhile Village Council Chairman)
•Chief Ukime Okon Effiong

The contest polarized the village into two opposing factions with the convicts aligning with Chief Aniedi Etim Ikpe, while the family of the deceased village head supported Chief Ukime Okon Effiong.

This division generated hostility and a fierce power struggle, particularly over control of village economic resources, most notably palm fruit plantations.

SEIZURE OF POWER AND CAPITAL CONTROL OF RESOURCES

Evidence before the court showed that the faction associated with the defendants gained dominance.

They assumed control of the village administration and unilaterally determined how palm fruits were to be harvested.

To consolidate control, they hired security guards from Ikot Itie Udung, a neighboring community.

These guards were placed under the supervision of the third convict, Ubong Udo Okpon, and were paid N25,000 monthly.

The convicts’ extrajudicial statements, admitted in evidence as Exhibits 3 and 5 without objection, confirmed these arrangements.

PRIOR THREATS AGAINST THE DECEASED

In August 2021, the deceased, Archibong Edem Bassey, harvested palm fruits from his personal plantation.

Security operatives arrested him and took him before the 1st convict, the factional village head.

He was assaulted, fined N1,000 for his release, and sternly warned not to enter the plantation again or risk being killed.

This threat was corroborated by the testimony of the first prosecution witness, PW1, the deceased’s senior brother, Sunday Edet Bassey who stated in court that the defendants warned:

“Tell your brother to stay away from this palm plantation or else if he enters again, they will kill him.”

The court noted that this testimony was not challenged during cross-examination.

Relying on settled legal principles that unchallenged evidence is deemed admitted, the court accepted this fact as established.

EVENTS OF 10TH SEPTEMBER, 2021

On 10th September 2021, the faction led by the 1st convict reportedly lifted a ban on palm fruit harvesting.

That same day:
•The deceased informed a witness, Gabriel Etim Effiong, that he was going to his plantation to protect his palm trees.
•PW1 testified that the deceased left home around 8am. for the bush.

He was never seen alive again.

The next day, 11th September 2021, his lifeless body was discovered in his plantation with visible signs of violence.

A ladder was found placed against a palm tree. His machete was missing and his body bore fractures.

POLICE INVESTIGATION

Following the discovery, the matter was reported at Nsit Atai Divisional Police Headquarters.

The convicts also appeared at the station, claiming they had come to report that the deceased had gone missing before his co**se was discovered.

However, the court found this conduct inconsistent with innocence when viewed alongside prior threats, the power struggle and the circumstances of death.

ISSUES FOR DETERMINATION

The central issue before the court was:
Whether the prosecution had proven the offences of conspiracy and murder against the defendants beyond reasonable doubt.

COURT’S FINDINGS

Justice Ette held that the prosecution successfully proved:
1. The existence of a conspiracy.
2. That the defendants caused the death of the deceased.
3. That the act was intentional and preceded by threats.

The court emphasized:
•The earlier threat to kill the deceased if he entered the plantation.
•The established control of the plantation by the defendants’ faction.
•The violent nature of the death.
•The unchallenged testimony of prosecution witnesses.

Accordingly, the court convicted Chief Effiong Okon Ukime, Sylvanus Edet Effiong and Ubong Udo Okpon on both counts.

SENTENCING REMARKS

In a strongly worded judgment, Justice Ette condemned the abuse of traditional authority and misuse of power.

He stated: “When men decide to play god at the slightest opportunity that power falls into their laps, they should not fail to exercise such power within the tenets of mercy and righteousness. Otherwise, power, the famous banana peel, has a canny way of showing such men of inordinate ambition that when you ride a tiger, you end up as a meal.”

He further observed: “It is most unjust and highly condemnable to take the life of another in his own property.”

Invoking moral and scriptural reflections, the judge said: “Those who live by the sword shall die by the sword.”

Justice Ette then pronounced: “Having come to the conclusion that you violated the laws of nature and of this great country, I hereby sentence the three of you to death by hanging. May the good Lord have mercy on your souls.

From the Desk of the president Federal Republic of Nigeria.
His Excellency President Bola amed Tinubu CCAFFRON.

Dear Nigerians,

Effective February 13, 2026, I signed Executive Order 9 of 2026 to restore what rightfully belongs to the Nigerian people.

For too long, excessive deductions, overlapping funds, and structural distortions in our oil and gas sector have weakened what should accrue to the Federation Account. When revenues meant for federal, state, and local governments are trapped in layers of charges and retention structures, development slows and trust erodes.

That must end.

With this Order, now officially gazetted, all Royalty Oil, Tax Oil, Profit Oil, Profit Gas, and other government entitlements under Production Sharing and related contracts will be paid directly into the Federation Account.

The additional 30 percent management fee and the 30 percent Frontier Exploration deduction will no longer stand between Nigeria and its lawful revenues.

This is about transparency, accountability, and full constitutional compliance.

As we strengthen security, invest in education, expand healthcare, stabilise our economy, and advance our energy transition, every legitimate naira due to the Federation must be protected.

NNPC Limited will operate strictly as a commercial enterprise, as intended by law. The era of duplicative deductions and fragmented oversight is over.

We will also undertake a comprehensive review of the Petroleum Industry Act to correct structural and fiscal anomalies. I have also approved the establishment of an Implementation Committee to oversee and ensure the effective, coordinated implementation of the executive order.

Nigeria can no longer afford leakage where there should be leadership.

We are safeguarding the Federation Account.
We are strengthening our budget.
We are acting in the national interest.

This was my promise to Nigerians when I asked for this job.

Nigeria First.

I thank you all.

Bola Ahmed Tinubu
President and Commander in Chief of the Armed Forces
Federal Republic of Nigeria.

WIKE TO JOIN APC AS FIGHT WITH GOVERNOR FUBARA REACHES BREAKING POINT!

The political war in Rivers State has taken a massive turn. New reports suggest that the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, is making final plans to officially join the All Progressives Congress (APC). This move is seen as a direct strategy to stop Governor Siminalayi Fubara from winning a second term in office.

Insiders say Wike is worried about his political future. He reportedly believes that if Fubara stays in power for another four years, Wike’s influence in Rivers State will be completely destroyed. For Wike, this is not just about a disagreement; it is a fight for political survival. He wants to use the power of the ruling party at the center to reclaim control over the state's political structure.

Wike has not been silent about his role in Rivers politics. He recently reminded his critics that he is not doing anything new. He stated that he is not the first person in Nigeria to act as a political godfather. According to him, mentorship and leadership are part of the game, and he is only protecting the "political family" he built over the years.

Impeachment Shadows: 26 Lawmakers on the Move
While Wike prepares his next move, the Rivers State House of Assembly is already putting pressure on the Governor. Currently, 26 lawmakers are pushing for the impeachment of Governor Fubara and his Deputy, Prof. Ngozi Odu.

🚨On foreign scene
BREAKING NEWS 🚨🚨

Ghana 🇬🇭 has signed a major deal to refine its gold locally, finally moving away from the old model of digging wealth and shipping raw.

The agreement links GoldBod, Gold Coast Refinery, and South Africa’s Rand Refinery, setting the stage for Ghana to meet global bullion standards starting February 2026.

This means Ghana won’t just be known for where gold comes from, but where it’s finished, valued, and monetized.

More control.simple means More value kept inside.
Less dependence on outsiders setting the price.

Gold isn’t leaving the country half-done anymore.

Say less 😮‍💨: Digging gold is easy. Owning the value is power.
