By Unyime Bassey
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Akwa Ibom State Council, led by Comrade Nsibiet John, is set to embark on a tour of the 31 Local Government Areas of the state to assess and document development activities being undertaken by the respective Local Government Chairmen.
The planned tour is expected to give the Union and participating journalists first-hand knowledge of projects, programmes and other initiatives being implemented across the local government areas, while bringing greater visibility to development efforts at the grassroots.
The initiative, according to the State Council, is part of its commitment to constructive journalism and effective coverage of grassroots development, with emphasis on reporting issues and activities that directly affect the people.
During the tour, the NUJ leadership and participating journalists are expected to visit the various local government areas, interact with relevant stakeholders and observe projects and programmes being executed by the councils.
The exercise will also provide an opportunity to highlight initiatives contributing to the development of communities, while promoting transparency, accountability and responsible governance at the grassroots.
Speaking on the initiative, the NUJ Chairman, Akwa Ibom State Council, Comrade Nsibiet John, said the Union had a responsibility to report developments across the state and ensure that activities at the local government level receive adequate media attention.
He noted that local government areas remained critical to grassroots development, stressing the importance of journalists seeing and documenting what was being done in communities.
According to him, the tour would enable journalists to move beyond reports generated from official statements and gain a clearer understanding of projects and initiatives taking place across the state.
He added that the Union would continue to promote journalism that informs the public, gives visibility to development efforts and encourages public officials to remain responsive to the needs of the people.
The exercise is expected to strengthen grassroots reportage in Akwa Ibom and provide the public with a broader picture of development activities across the state's 31 local government areas.
It will also give Local Government Chairmen an opportunity to showcase projects and initiatives in their respective areas, while allowing journalists to independently observe, verify and report on developments and their impact on communities.
