As preparations gradually gather momentum for the 2027 general elections, the call by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for eligible Nigerians to participate in the Continuous Voter Registration exercise deserves urgent national attention. The exercise which started on Monday, May 11, 2026, Nigerians once again have the opportunity to register, transfer their voter details, or correct existing information ahead of the next electoral cycle. This exercise is not merely administrative; it is the foundation upon which democratic participation rests.

The message from INEC in Akwa Ibom State comes at a critical time when voter apathy continues to threaten the strength of Nigeria’s democracy. Across the country, millions of eligible citizens still remain outside the electoral register, while many others have relocated and failed to transfer their voting locations. Democracy only thrives when citizens actively participate, and participation begins with registration. A nation where citizens refuse to vote gradually surrenders its future to a few determined interests.

For this reason, The Spokesman Newspaper is once again lending its voice to encourage Nigerians, especially young people, first-time voters, women, artisans, students, and rural dwellers, to take this exercise seriously. The future of governance, leadership, development, and accountability cannot be separated from the ballot box. Every road constructed, every school renovated, every hospital equipped, and every economic decision made by government eventually traces back to leadership chosen through elections.

In many homes today, Nigerians complain bitterly about unemployment, insecurity, poor infrastructure, inflation, and the rising cost of living. Yet, meaningful change cannot happen when citizens distance themselves from the democratic process. Those who refuse to register or vote inadvertently weaken their own voices. Elections remain one of the most peaceful and legitimate means through which citizens can demand better governance and hold leaders accountable.

The importance of the Continuous Voter Registration exercise becomes even more significant considering the growing population of young Nigerians who have attained voting age since the last election. The youth constitute a major force in the nation’s political and economic future, but that influence can only count when translated into electoral participation. Social media activism alone cannot replace the power of a valid voter card on election day.

This appeal should resonate across the entire federation. INEC has consistently emphasized the need for inclusiveness in the electoral process, and citizens must reciprocate by embracing the opportunity provided.

Community leaders, religious organizations, traditional institutions, civil society groups, and the media all have a responsibility to mobilize the people and create awareness, especially in remote communities where information may not spread quickly.

Importantly, Nigerians must also understand that voter registration is not only about choosing presidents or governors. It is about shaping the direction of local communities and determining the quality of representation at all levels.
From councillors to lawmakers and governors, the leaders elected today make decisions that directly affect the daily realities of ordinary citizens. Refusing to participate only widens the gap between the people and governance.

As the 2027 elections draw closer, Nigerians must reject indifference and embrace civic responsibility. The call by INEC should not be ignored. Citizens should troop out peacefully to register, update their records where necessary, and prepare to participate fully in the democratic process. The power of democracy lies in the people, and the vote remains the strongest instrument citizens possess. Indeed, no one should sit this one out, because every vote truly matters.

The Akwa Ibom State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has constituted a Local Organising Committee to oversee the conduct of the party’s forthcoming primaries, with the Secretary to the State Government, Prince Enobong Uwah, named as Chairman.

The latest appointment comes barely weeks after Prince Uwah successfully chaired the party’s Congress Implementation Committee, an exercise which was widely adjudged by stakeholders and party faithful as one of the freest and fairest congresses conducted by the APC in the State in recent times.

TheHILL reports that the announcement followed resolutions reached at a stakeholders meeting of the party held in the state, where the APC also passed a vote of confidence on Governor Umo Eno for what it described as his inclusive leadership style and commitment to political stability in Akwa Ibom.

In a statement issued Tuesday by the State Publicity Secretary of the party, Chief Patrick Edeke, the APC commended Governor Eno for what it termed “visionary leadership, uncommon humility and statesmanship,” noting that his approach to governance has continued to attract goodwill across political lines and strengthen unity within the party.

The party said the success recorded at the recent stakeholders meeting reflected the Governor’s “political maturity, unifying spirit and commitment to the collective interest of the APC in Akwa Ibom State.”

The statement also acknowledged the role of the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio, describing him as a strong pillar of the party whose experience, influence and continued support have remained invaluable to the growth of the APC in the state and beyond.

Meanwhile, members of the Local Organising Committee unveiled by the party include Prince Enobong Uwah as Chairman, while Envoy Nsentip Akpabio will serve as Secretary.

Other members are Rt. Hon. KufreAbasi Edidem, Hon. Frank Archibong, Engr. Uwem Okoko, Hon. Chief Uno Etim Uno, Arc. Ubokutom Nya, Barr. Kemfon Neke, Obongawan Geraldine Etuk and Hon. Dr. Owoidighe Ekpoattai.

The political expansion of Mark Esset across the four constituent LGAs is no longer a silent development. What began as a legislative mandate is steadily evolving into a broad-based political movement driven by stakeholders, community leaders, youths, women groups, and influential political actors across Uyo Federal Constituency.

In such an emerging political history of Akwa Ibom State, few lawmakers have generated as much grassroots conversation, strategic relevance, and constituency-wide visibility in recent times as Mark Esset.

From the bustling political corridors of Uyo to the agrarian communities of Ibesikpo Asutan, from the riverine strengths of Uruan to the resilient people of Nsit Atai, the story of Rep. Mark Esset is gradually becoming one of political inclusion, accessibility, federal presence, and strategic constituency engagement.

His emergence at the Green Chamber did not merely produce another federal lawmaker; it produced a politician many now describe as “a connecting force among the four constituent LGAs.”

UYO: THE POLITICAL CAPITAL THAT DEMANDS RESULTS

Representing Uyo Federal Constituency is no easy assignment. Uyo, being the state capital and political heartbeat of Akwa Ibom, naturally places enormous pressure on any representative occupying the seat. Expectations are always high. Visibility is compulsory. Performance is constantly scrutinized.

Yet, within a relatively short period, Rep. Mark Esset has managed to carve a reputation as a lawmaker who understands the delicate balance between politics and people-oriented representation.

In Uyo metropolis and adjoining communities, his name has become increasingly associated with accessibility, youth engagement, empowerment programmes, constituency interventions, and strategic alignment with the developmental agenda of the state government.

• Contribution from Uyo LGA

Following a comprehensive assessment of his performance and leadership delivery, stakeholders unanimously resolved to endorse and support his continuity in office, expressing satisfaction with the impact of his representation.

The strategic stakeholders’ meeting was convened at the instance of the Secretary to the State Government and Political Leader of Uyo Federal Constituency, Prince Enobong Uwah, whose leadership and coordination brought together critical political actors and opinion leaders from across Uyo Local Government Area.

The high-level gathering attracted prominent stakeholders, including the Deputy Political Leader of Uyo LGA, Rt. Hon. Monday Eyo; Executive Chairman of Uyo LGA, Dr. Uwemedimo Udo; Chairman of Uyo Capital City Development Authority, Rt. Hon. Anietie Eka; Commissioner for Culture and Tourism, Dr. Anieti Udofia; Delivery Advisor to the Governor and Managing Director of Ibom Hotels & Resort, Sir Charles Udoh; CEO of Verini Construction Company, Elder Ini Utuk; Otuekong Ekerette Ekpenyong; Deputy Vice Chancellor of the University of Uyo, Prof. Dianabasi Eduwem; Elder Enefiok Ekefre; Elder Imo Okon; Dr. John James Etim; Hon. Christiana Bassey Essien; Hon. Tony Asikpo; Ime Uwah; Hon. Vincent Udo; Obong Maurice Edet; Obong Simeon Umoette; Elder Umo Umo; Obot James; Secretary of Council, Mr. Ubong Udofia; councillors, supervisors, appointees of the Governor from Uyo extraction, as well as party executive officers.

The convergence of such influential political leaders, technocrats, party stalwarts, and grassroots mobilizers underscored the growing consensus within Uyo LGA on the need to sustain experienced and result-oriented leadership for the continued progress of the constituency and the state at large.

Political observers note that unlike many lawmakers who become distant after elections, Mark Esset has deliberately maintained close ties with grassroots stakeholders, ward leaders, youth groups, market women, and professional bodies across Uyo LGA.

For many constituents, his strength lies not merely in speeches at the National Assembly, but in his ability to sustain human relationships back home.

IBESIKPO ASUTAN: A STRONGHOLD OF GRASSROOTS POLITICS

In Ibesikpo Asutan, politics is deeply rooted in community loyalty, family structures, and grassroots mobilization. It is a terrain where political acceptance is earned through constant presence and visible intervention.

Rep. Mark Esset appears to understand this reality.

Across communities in Ibesikpo Asutan, his political structure has steadily expanded through strategic engagements with leaders, women groups, youths, elders, and stakeholders cutting across party lines.

• Contribution from Ibesikpo Asutan LGA

His endorsement followed a high-level stakeholders’ meeting held at the Uyo residence of the Commissioner for Budget and Economic Planning, Dr. Linus Nkan, where party leaders and critical stakeholders from Ibesikpo Asutan converged to deliberate on the political future of the area ahead of the 2027 elections.

In his remarks, the Chairman of Ibesikpo Asutan LGA, Hon. Edidiong Inyang, commended party faithful for their continued support for Governor Umo Eno and the APC, urging them to remain united as the state advances on its developmental path.

A major highlight of the meeting was an interactive session between stakeholders and the endorsed candidates, during which issues of governance, effective representation, and development priorities were discussed.

Speaking at the gathering, Senator Aniekan Bassey lauded Governor Umo Eno’s leadership under the ARISE Agenda and stressed the need for continuity, noting that experienced lawmakers are better positioned to attract federal presence and deliver greater dividends of democracy.

Hon. Mark Esset, in his response, thanked stakeholders for the overwhelming endorsement, describing it as a call to greater service, while reaffirming his commitment to effective representation, impactful legislation, and the attraction of meaningful federal projects to the constituency.

Also speaking, the host, Dr. Linus Nkan, reaffirmed stakeholders’ confidence in the endorsed candidates and pledged total support for their electoral success.

Dignitaries at the meeting included former House of Representatives member, Hon. Emaeyak Ukpong; APC Zonal Officer for Uyo Senatorial District, Mr. Isuamfon Archibong; former council chairmen; party executives; aides to the Governor; and other key stakeholders from Ibesikpo Asutan LGA.

Several constituents often point to his recent empowerment initiatives and constituency outreach programmes as signs that the federal constituency is no longer politically abandoned at the national level.

Beyond physical projects, his supporters insist that his greatest contribution may be restoring a sense of inclusion among constituents who previously felt disconnected from federal representation.

In political conversations across the LGA, many now see him as one of the emerging stabilizing figures capable of building stronger political cohesion within the constituency.

URUAN: TRADITIONAL AND POLITICAL STRUCTURES RESPONDING POSITIVELY

For decades, Uruan has remained one of the most politically strategic areas within the federal constituency. With its rich cultural identity, economic relevance, and historical political influence, any federal lawmaker who ignores Uruan does so at great political risk.

Rep. Mark Esset has seemingly avoided that mistake.

In Uruan, the lawmaker’s growing relationship with community stakeholders and traditional institutions has continued to shape positive political narratives around his representation.

Several influential political actors within Uruan, especially Sen. Aniekan Bassey, are believed to have developed cordial relationships with the federal lawmaker owing to his regular consultations and constituency interactions.

* Contribution from Uruan LGA

The endorsement of Mark Esset by APC stakeholders in Uruan followed a strategic stakeholders’ meeting held at the Uyo residence of Hon. (Surv.) Iniobong Ekpenyong.

The well-attended gathering brought together party leaders, elected officials, grassroots mobilizers, and critical stakeholders who unanimously expressed confidence in Hon. Mark Esset’s representation and backed his continuity in office ahead of 2027.

Speaking during the meeting, Senator Aniekan Bassey emphasized the importance of continuity and experienced leadership, stressing that ranking lawmakers are better positioned to attract federal presence and greater dividends of democracy to the people.

The meeting was attended by Hon. Mark Esset, member representing Uruan State Constituency, Dr. Itorobong Etim; Special Assistant to the Governor on Political Affairs, Dr. Godwin Ntukude, former Member representing the area in the House of Assembly, Hon. KufreAbasi Etuk, Chairman of AKIRS, Mr. Okon Okon; former council chairmen; former House of Assembly members; councillors; supervisors; party executives; aides to the Governor; and other influential stakeholders from across Uruan LGA.

Observers say his ability to maintain open communication with elders, youths, professionals, and political stakeholders has helped him steadily consolidate acceptance within the riverine axis of the constituency.

There are also indications that many political leaders in Uruan see him as a stabilizing figure capable of ensuring the area maintains relevance within the broader political equation of the constituency.

NSIT ATAI: THE RESILIENT VOICE SEEKING GREATER FEDERAL ATTENTION

Among the four LGAs, Nsit Atai has historically maintained a strong desire for inclusion, development, and political recognition. The people are known for resilience, loyalty, and active participation in politics.

Rep. Mark Esset’s growing relationship his brothers and sisters has therefore become politically significant.

Stakeholders within the area - The Commissioner of Humanitarian Services, Princess Emem Ibanga, the Chairman of Council, Hon. Anthony NYONG, the Member of AKHA, Prince Anefiok Attah, Elder Iniabasi Obot, Mr. Emmanuel OKON, MD Eminence Oil & Gas Ltd., the APC Chapter Chairman of Nsit Atai, Hon. Etim Mfon Samuel, women, youths and elders of even other political parties have increasingly acknowledged his efforts at engagement and representation, especially in relation to constituency outreach and human capital development programmes.

Though expectations remain high, many constituents believe the lawmaker has shown willingness to carry every part of the local government along without obvious sectional bias.

For now, political analysts say Mark Esset’s greatest strength may be his attempt to maintain equilibrium among the four LGAs, a task many before him struggled to achieve effectively.

A LAWMAKER BUILDING POLITICAL CAPITAL

At the National Assembly, Rep. Mark Esset continues to build his legislative profile while simultaneously strengthening his grassroots political architecture back home.

His supporters portray him as a politician with a listening ear, while critics continue to challenge him to expand the scale of constituency projects and federal influence.

But in politics, perception often shapes momentum.

And increasingly across Uyo Federal Constituency, the perception gaining ground is that Mark Esset is gradually positioning himself not just as a representative, but as a political bridge across Uyo, Ibesikpo Asutan, Uruan, and Nsit Atai.

Whether through empowerment initiatives, strategic alliances, constituency engagements, or political accessibility, his name continues to resonate across the four LGAs in ways that suggest an evolving political future.

But one thing appears increasingly undeniable. Rep. Mark Esset is no longer just occupying a seat in the House of Representatives. He is steadily becoming a major political conversation across Uyo Federal Constituency.
