100 DAYS IN OFFICE: Oborevwori earmarks projects for inauguration

Governor of Delta State, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, Thursday, said his administration has lined up series of projects for inauguration to mark his first 100 days in office.

Governor Oborevwori stated this during inspection of projects at the Dennis Osadebay University, Anwai-Asaba and other parts of the state capital.

Projects inspected included the Administrative building, Faculty of Agriculture building, lecture theatres, Faculty of Environment, and Vice Chancellor's lodge.

Others include; the State High Court Complex, 16km internal roads and drainages around Madonna Road area and the Okpanam - Ibusa Road both in Oshimili South and Oshimili North Local Government Areas of the state.

He expressed satisfaction with the quality of work done at the various projects, adding that he would not inaugurate any project not executed to specification.

"In line with my M.O.R.E agenda, I summoned all the Permanent Secretaries to list out projects that we know we can complete urgently and this Dennis Osadebay University is one of them.

"I must tell you that the contractor is doing a very good job and I commend him for that. I know that in the next one week, we will come here for commissioning.

On the High Court Complex, the Governor said some of the corrections he pointed out earlier have been effected, adding that the project would be ready for inauguration in two weeks time.

"I am actually satisfied with the work done so far because the corrections we suggested such as the work panel and the positioning of the toilets, have all been corrected.

"There are also some amendments to the sitting capacity which they are going to do and the contractor has assured us that it will be completed and ready for commissioning in 10 days.

"Some of these ongoing projects and the new ones initiated will be inaugurated very soon; all within my 100 days in office.

"I promised Deltans that I am going to do M.O.R.E and I am very sure that they will get more"

At the 16km adjoining roads around Madonna school road, Governor Oborevwori said he was impressed with the quality of work done, assuring that the project was ready for inauguration.

"I was here on 23rd of June and looking at the work now, I can say that they have done very well. They have completed the second layer now which is about 16 kilomiters of adjoining roads with drains within this Madonna area.

"The contractor has done very well because he knows that we want good jobs. I won't inaugurate any work that is not up to specification.

"The Ughelli-Asaba dualisation project is another job ongoing that I look forward to completing and I pray that this flood that is coming now does not affect the pace of work there."

He said his administration would forward to the State Assembly a supplementary budget of N167 billion to address areas of need.

The Governor said: "I have already told Deltans that there will be meaningful development and as you can see, we just had our maiden Exco yesterday, where a lot of approvals were granted.

"We also approved a supplementary budget to be able to carter for some of the areas that we know that are not properly funded and I can tell you that I have a good team and am sure that Deltans will get more from my administration".

MIDWEST AT 60: Oborevwori Calls For Greater Ties For All Round Devt

Governor of Delta State, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, has called for greater cooperation between Delta and Edo States to ensure speedy development of the two states.

Oborevwori made the call on Monday at a colloquium to mark the 60th anniversary of the creation of the Midwestern Region of Nigeria, later renamed Bendel State.

The colloquium with the theme, ‘60 Years After the Referendum, Which Way Midwest?’ took place at Benin City, Edo State.

Deputy Governor of Delta State, Sir Monday Onyeme, read the address of Oborevwori at the ceremony that had in attendance, the Governor of Edo State, Mr Godwin Obaseki, representative of the Governor of Bayelsa State, Sen. Adams Oshiomole, among others.

“I call on our people from both States to sustain and deepen the very cordial relationship we have all shared; we stand to gain from such harmonious co-existence, sharing with and caring for each other.

“So, with this colloquium, I strongly believe that we should deepen our relationship, possibly have a council that will comprise people from both states to regularly meet and insist on the implementation of a development roadmap to ensure speedy socio-economic development of our states,” the governor said.

He also, went through memory lane on how 89.07 per cent of the people voted to opt out of Western Region with headquarter at Ibadan and chose Midwest State with headquarter at Benin City.

The governor said, “this ceremony is very special in several ways as it brings fresh memories of the creation of the Midwest Region as it then was, through the instrumentality of a transparently free and fair referendum by the people occupying the Midwest area of the old Western Region.

“I must thank His Excellency, Godwin Obaseki, for putting together, this colloquium to remind us of where we are coming from, the shared values, love and amity among our people and in fact, the true essence of democracy.

“The history of this epic referendum is, no doubt, so vast that it cannot be adequately covered in one fell swoop. It is of utmost importance here to note that once a people decide on anything of interest to them, nothing can change their stand: neither money nor intimidation can sway them. In a seemingly simple plebiscite, two boxes – black and white – were placed before the voters to choose whether to remain in Western Region with its headquarters in Ibadan or vote for a Midwest Region.

“While sixty percent of the registered voters were enough to tilt the balance either way, 89.07 percent of the people voted overwhelmingly to opt out of the Western Region. In that plebiscite, a region, the Midwest Region, was created without much fuss. This result was not achieved without opposition. There were intense campaigns from both sides but they were carried out without violence or threat to lives. In spite of the opposition’s resistance, the people’s will prevailed.

“Beyond the euphoria that the success of the referendum elicited, I am particularly touched by the neat, straight forward process that the creation of a region or State as it is presently known, required and it was accepted across the board. The losers bore their loss with equanimity.

“Particularly important here is the acceptance of the result on the one hand and the violence-free conduct of the referendum unlike the present-day elections, which are often characterized by needless violence, bloodshed and mayhem in some parts of the country. This creation of a State through the ballot – the only one to be so created in the country, is significant as it demonstrates that Nigerians are not violent and that when democratic processes are undertaken transparently, the people will queue behind whatever outcome that the exercise brings.

“Let us pay tribute to the founding fathers of this great victory of our people. There are too numerous to be mentioned but we must not forget the enormous prices they paid to release the Midwest Region from an apparent hegemonic hold of the Western Region. It is pertinent to note that the Midwest held its own and thrived without hitches as a Region in a most astonishing way, with Chief Dennis Osadebey and Sir Jereton Mariere at the helm. Oba Akenzua II was particularly solid behind the agitators for the creation of Midwest Region.

“The former Midwest Region was later christened Bendel State by military fiat while the same military in the same method, later divided Bendel State into Edo and Delta States. Glory be to God, people in both States still share the same brotherhood through cultural, marital and social ties.

“Beyond these, is that people from both States still co-habit like they have always done when they were in the same State. In addition to this, is the non-discrimination in property ownership on either side of the artificial divide. The result is that we are still closely knit in our relationship as brothers and sisters.

“Once again, I thank my brother governor, His Excellency, Godwin Obaseki, for convening this gathering, which will further strengthen the fraternal bond among our people.”

Governor Godwin Obaseki, had in an address, said, “it is with immense pleasure and a sense of historical significance that I extend a warm welcome to all of you to the 60th anniversary colloquium of the Midwest Referendum.

“We are gathered here today not only to commemorate a pivotal moment in our history but also to reflect upon the journey that brought us to this point.

“This colloquium offers us an opportunity to engage in thoughtful discourse, sharing insights, and perspectives that can guide our path forward.”

Sen. Adams Oshiomole was among those who spoke at the event that was attended by the Deputy Chief of Staff, Government House, Asaba, Sir Christopher Osakwe, Rt. Hon. Funkekeme Solomon, Mr Charles Aniagwu, Mr Darlington Ijeh, Mr Jaro Egbo, Rt. Hon. Basil Ganagana, among others.

Delta@32: Oborevwori tasks Deltans on deepening democracy, unity

The Governor of Delta State, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori, on Sunday, called on Deltans to always engage in actions that would deepen democracy and foster unity among them for sustainable development programmes to be executed.

Oborevwori, represented by his Deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, spoke at an inter-denominational thanksgiving service held at the Cathedral Church of St. Peters (Anglican Communion), Bishop's Court, Asaba, to mark the 32 years of the state's creation.

He thanked Deltans for the support they are giving to his administration and successive governments since the creation of the state on August 27, 1991.

The Governor observed that the people of the state are more united 32 years after its creation due to the support they gave to his predecessors and to his administration.

Oborevwori paid tributes to former leaders and civil servants for their contributions to the development of the state.

He said: "It is gratifying to note that, in all spheres of life, we have made tremendous progress and the greatest of all is that we are proud to say that we are Deltans.

"Today, we are more united as a people than ever before and on behalf of Deltans we thank those who have contributed in several ways for us to be where we are today as a people.

"As we celebrate, we should continue to engage in actions that will deepen democracy, a government which has given us room to choose those who lead us.

"It is worthy to state that my predecessors in office without exception did their best for us to enjoy what we have today as Delta and I pray that God Almighty will continue to bless them with good health and wisdom as we continue to tap from their experience.

"I also want to express my profound appreciation to our Royal Fathers for making their domains peaceful for socio-economic activities to take place because, it is a fact that no development can take place in areas where there are crises," he stated.

He said his administration would continue to ensure the ex*****on of developmental programmes and projects that have significance and purpose on the lives of the people.

"Already, we are doing a lot since assumption of office on May 29, 2023 to ensure that our people enjoy true dividends of democracy; and, we are happy to say that our programmes are already yielding results and in the next four years and beyond, we shall have more reasons to thank God for an impactful administration.

"In this regard, we must acknowledge and appreciate Deltans outside the State and in the Diaspora for the significant contributions to the development of the state in various ways since the creation of our State.

"I thank you once again for your prayers and support for our administration and for engaging in actions that will deepen our unity as a people and for ensuring that our state enjoys enduring peace and sustainable development," Oborevwori stated.

Bishop of the Anglican Diocese of Asaba, Rt. Rev'd Kingsley Obuh in his sermon congratulated Governor Sheriff Oborevwori on the anniversary of the State's creation and commended past leaders of the state for their contributions to the growth and development of the state.

He called on leaders to sustain unity in the state by ensuring that dividends of democracy were distributed on the basis of equity, fairness and justice.

He said God has been the help of Delta State and would continue to help Deltans as long as the people continued to give Him praise in thanksgiving.

He called on Deltans to join hands with Governor Sheriff Oborevwori to build a stronger, greater and more united Delta State of our dreams.

The thanksgiving service was attended by wife of the Deputy Governor, Mrs Catherine Onyeme; Speaker of the State House of Assembly Rt. Hon. Emomotimi Guwor and his deputy Rt. Hon. Arthur Akpowowo and former Deputy Governor, Sir Benjamin Elue.

Others include Majority Leader of the State House of Assembly, Engr Emeka Nwaobi, members of the State House of Assembly and members of the State Executive Council, Managing Director of DESOPADEC, Chief Festus Ochonogor; among other top government functionaries.
