Van Dijk responds after Slot points the finger for Galatasaray loss

Liverpool will have to overturn a 1-0 deficit in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie against Galatasaray and Virgil van Dijk has given his take on the performance

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has issued a rallying cry to his team-mates after they suffered a disappointing 1-0 defeat against Galatasaray. The Reds left Istanbul for the second time this season having lost by that scoreline and now have to turn things around in the second leg of their last-16 tie.

Mario Lemina's early header was the game's only goal, as Liverpool wasted chances through Florian Wirtz, Alexis Mac Allister and Hugo Ekitike. They also saw Ibrahima Konate's goal ruled out by VAR for handball, while Van Dijk felt he should have been awarded a penalty.

Speaking after the match, manager Arne Slot took responsibility for Liverpool's 12th defeat of the season after going behind. But Van Dijk clearly feels that the onus is on the players to lead the fightback at Anfield next Wednesday.

“We have to fight, we have to deserve it,” said Van Dijk. “We have to earn the next round. Next week obviously is the decider. We’re at home but we have to show that we want and deserve to go through, first and foremost, in the way we play, defend and attack.

“You have to earn the right. You have to fight for it, the challenges, second ball fight. In games we have been showing that and in some games we have been lacking, and that's why we have been inconsistent unfortunately.

“But that's something we want to improve and aim for. If we want to go through to the next round, we definitely have to show that on Wednesday. Those are the main things and together in our house, home and our fans, we hopefully can make it an amazing evening.

“Did I see enough to think we can get through? I've seen a lot in terms of the chances we created but it doesn't mean that that's going to be enough.”

Galatasaray will be without any away fans for the second leg in Liverpool after UEFA imposed a ban following crowd disturbances in their play-off round at Juventus. Van Dijk believes that will be a big advantage for his side and hopes they can cut out individual errors and make it third time lucky this season against their Turkish opponents.

“There's only our fans there, so hopefully it's going to be an amazing evening positively for us,” said Van Dijk. “There will be opportunities, there will be space to explore, there will be momentum, hopefully going our way.

“We started the game in Istanbul well, maybe should have scored and that changes the momentum of the game and obviously the atmosphere in the stadium, but we didn't. I don't want to blame anything but we made some individual mistakes, we lost the ball in positions where we shouldn't and then obviously with the pace and directness they have, they could look dangerous.

“I feel like we didn't give away a big chance away that much. We conceded from a set-piece so that confirms we still have work to do on that side, but 1-0 down, still all to play for.”

Liverpool were beaten 1-0 by Galatasaray in the Champions League last-16 first leg on Tuesday night, with Arne Slot's future the subject of debate

Slot sent sack reality check and Tottenham drop hint before Reds clash.

Liverpool have been left reeling once again following their 14th defeat of the 2025/26 campaign

With each Liverpool defeat, Arne Slot's case for continuing in his role becomes weaker. The Dutchman oversaw his side fall to a 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray on Tuesday in the first leg of their Champions League knockout stage tie.

It's the second time this season the reigning Premier League champions have lost to the Turkish giants and given it marks the 14th defeat of the campaign across all competitions, patience is wearing thin in Merseyside.

With a crucial clash against Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday ahead, Mirror Football takes a look at Jamie Carragher's verdict on sacking Slot as well as an update confirmed by the north London side before their trip to Anfield.

Arne Slot's reality check

Liverpool's 1-0 defeat to Galatasaray on Tuesday marked the Reds' 14th defeat of the season across all competitions. It was a result and performance that left Jamie Carragher - and the Liverpool fanbase - utterly frustrated about the club's dramatic downturn this season following their title-winning campaign.

The former Reds defender was in the midst of his CBS Sports duties when watching the action unfold in Turkey as Carragher warned Slot that he could be dismissed at the end of the season if he's unable to change his team's fortunes.

Xabi Alonso ‘three-year deal agreed’ claim quashed amid Arne Slot sack talk.

Xabi Alonso was claimed to have already agreed a three-year deal to take over from Arne Slot as Liverpool head coach, but this has since been dismissed.

Tuesday’s defeat to Galatasaray has led to further questions over whether Slot will be sacked, though there remains little indication Liverpool would part ways with their head coach mid-season.

Arne Slot points the blame at one person after Liverpool's loss to Galatasaray.

Arne Slot says Liverpool must learn to take their chances if they want to progress to the Champions League quarter-finals after losing 1-0 to Galatasaray in the first leg of their last-16 tie

Arne Slot took responsibility for Liverpool's latest defeat, but says his players must also learn to take their chances if they want to continue their Champions League journey.

The Reds suffered a 1-0 defeat at Galatasaray on Tuesday night for the second time this season after Mario Lemina headed in the only goal of the match after seven minutes in the first leg of their last-16 tie at Rams Park.

Florian Wirtz squandered a couple of excellent openings early on, Alexis Mac Allister and Hugo Ekitike wasted presentable opportunities in the second half, whilst Ibrahima Konate had a scrappy equaliser disallowed for what was judged to be handball.

And Slot said: "We started the game really well, even better than three months ago. We had three or four great moments, the biggest moment when Florian came across almost an open goal but he couldn't finish that ball.

"We weren't able to score and like last time, with their first attack it led to a corner and you have to give credit to the way when they get a chance they play it like it's the last chance of their lives."
