Iran to play World Cup games in USA as planned insists FIFA president Infantino

Iran will play their World Cup matches in the United States, FIFA president Gianni Infantino has insisted.

Iran's participation has been the subject of uncertainty since the US and Israel launched airstrikes on the country on February 28.

The country's football association officials were the only one of FIFA's 211 member nations absent from Thursday's FIFA congress in Vancouver.

Infantino opened his congress address by insisting the Iranian team would participate at the finals in north America.

"Let me start at the outset by confirming straight away, for those who maybe want to say something else or write something else, that of course Iran will be participating at the FIFA World Cup 2026," Infantino said, to cheers from the assembled delegates.

"And of course, Iran will play in the USA. The reason for that is simple, because we have to unite. We have to bring people together."

However, back in March, Iran's sports minister ruled out participating in the World Cup.

Achraf Hakimi absence shocks Germany before Bayern clash

Hakimi injury has dealt a major blow to Paris Saint-Germain ahead of their decisive second leg against Bayern Munich in the UEFA Champions League. The Moroccan player, who had been a key figure with consistent performances last season, will miss the return leg after suffering a thigh injury despite finishing the first match on the pitch.

Achraf Hakimi, once remarkably durable, now faces recurring physical setbacks after an exhausting previous campaign. In the middle of this tense European context, Hakimi injury raises serious concerns for PSG, as German media widely describe his absence as a decisive advantage for Bayern, given his impact both defensively and offensively.

German outlets such as Sky Germany, Sport1 and Kicker all highlight the scale of the loss, insisting that PSG will miss his speed and attacking runs against a high-pressing Bayern side. While Luis Enrique still has options like Warren Zaïre-Emery, the challenge remains immense for the Parisians, who must now prove they can cope without one of their most influential players, making Hakimi injury a central concern heading into the clash.

Mason Mount expects Carrick's side to be EPL title challengers next season

Mason Mount believes Manchester United boast the quality and mindset to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

The 27-year-old is coming towards the end of his third season at Old Trafford, where injuries and competition for places have reduced him to just 69 appearances since joining from Chelsea.

Mount knows United have yet to see the best of him, but he boasts an unwavering self-belief on top of confidence in the capabilities of a United side that Michael Carrick has on the brink of Champions League qualification.

The midfielder became a European champion with Chelsea in 2021 and believes the Red Devils "have the quality" to fight for the domestic title next term, even with big decisions to be made on the manager and more.

Asked which trophy or accolade he would like before he retired, Mount added: "The Premier League and I think we can do it.

"I dreamt of that as a kid. I dreamt of winning the Champions League.

"To win the Premier League, a domestic title, not many get to say they've done that. Next season it could be a possibility if we keep working hard.

"There were a few results that didn't go our way this year and we find ourselves in third.

"There's a long way to go and a lot of hard work over pre-season but that'll be a special goal."

Asked if there is a confidence that can happen, Mount said: "I think you have to be realistic, but there is a big confidence behind that.

"Some of the games that we played this season - away at Arsenal, Liverpool - we know it is about consistency through the whole season.

"If we can get that right, we'll be right up there."

'I don't feel like I'm done' – Williamson signs new Arsenal deal

Leah Williamson has signed a new contract with Arsenal, extending her 20-year stay at the club.

Having joined the academy as an eight-year-old in 2006, Williamson has now reportedly put pen to paper on a two-year deal to keep her at the Emirates.

Since breaking into the senior side in 2014, the England captain has made 252 appearances for Arsenal in competitions, netting 17 goals, including her first at the Emirates in their thumping 7-0 victory over Leicester City on Tuesday.

During her time, Williamson has won the Women's Super League title in 2018-19, two FA Cups, four League Cups, the Champions League and the Champions Cup.

"I don't feel like I'm done," she told Arsenal's website.

"I think it's really special to be somewhere where you care so much about the people, the project, the place. I don't think it's something to take for granted.

"After 20 years, I still feel wanted, and I want to be here, so I don't understand why it would have been time to leave this time.

I am a soldier' – Wissa vows to fight for Newcastle future

Yoane Wissa has vowed to fight for his place at Newcastle United amid rumours of a potential exit from St. James Park this summer.

Wissa joined Newcastle from Brentford in a reported £50m transfer less than 12 months ago, but has failed to hit the heights in an injury-disrupted campaign.

The 29-year-old has made 24 appearances in all competitions for Eddie Howe's side in 2025-26, scoring just three goals as well as providing one assist.

He sustained a knee injury just days after completing his big-money switch and was signed, along with Nick Woltemade, to fill the gap left by the departing Alexander Isak.

Wissa did not make his debut for the club until December against Burnley, though of his outings for the Magpies this season, only eight have been from the start.

And with Newcastle 14th in the Premier League, it has been reported that Wissa could be moved on at the end of the campaign, but the striker does not plan on going anywhere.

"I am a soldier. I will keep going. I want the fans to know the love I have for this shirt. Looking forward to next season, I understand how big this club is," Wissa told Joel Beya TV.

"I hope I'm going to do better. It's such a privilege. I just want to wear the shirt. I didn't wait for the proper time to come back [from injury].

"It should have definitely been more. You just want to catch the train, but that was impossible, because my knee wasn't right."
