Troops rescue 74 NYSC members from possible abduction in Borno

November 13, 2025

The Joint Task Force (JTF) of Operation Hadin Kai in northeastern Nigeria successfully rescued 74 members of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) from a suspected kidnapping attempt by Boko Haram and ISWAP insurgents.

Security analyst Zagazola Makama revealed on Thursday that the corps members were rescued along the Buratai–Kamuya road in Borno State. According to military sources, 36 men and 38 women were freed around 9:05 p.m. on Tuesday after their vehicles broke down near an area known for abductions.

The rescue was initiated when a closed-circuit surveillance system monitored by troops detected unusual activity involving three buses at the location. Soldiers were quickly dispatched, found the stranded corps members, and evacuated them to safety, averting a potential attack by insurgents in the area.

The NYSC members had initially been es**rted from Maiduguri to Damaturu by troops from the 7 Division Garrison. After reaching Damaturu, they reportedly continued their journey toward Hawul Local Government Area without notifying Sector 2 Headquarters or obtaining a new armed es**rt.

Reports indicate the group was on an evangelical mission to Hawul when the incident occurred. The rescued corps members are now being accommodated at the Buratai military base while arrangements are made for their safe onward travel.

NDLEA Partners US, UK to Probe N338bn Co***ne Seized at Lagos Port

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has launched a joint investigation with the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and the United Kingdom National Crime Agency (NCA) to uncover the cartel behind a massive consignment of co***ne weighing 1,000 kilograms recovered at the PTML Terminal of Tincan Island Port, Lagos.

The illicit substance, valued at over $235 million (₦338 billion) in the international market, represents one of the largest single seizures of co***ne in the history of the Lagos port.

According to NDLEA, the discovery was made after the PTML terminal operators observed suspicious items inside an empty container last weekend and immediately alerted relevant security agencies, including NDLEA and the Nigeria Customs Service. A field test conducted by NDLEA officers confirmed the substance as co***ne.

Following collaborative engagements between the NDLEA Chairman/Chief Executive, Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Retd.), and the Comptroller General of Customs, Dr. Adewale Adeniyi, the consignment was officially handed over to NDLEA for investigation on Tuesday, November 11, 2025.

Given the international scale of the operation, Marwa directed the involvement of the agency’s global partners to ensure a thorough probe and coordinated enforcement action across borders.

In view of the magnitude and global dimension of this seizure, we have engaged our partners in the US-DEA and UK-NCA to ensure no stone is left unturned,” Marwa stated. “The goal is to identify and bring to justice all those behind this huge consignment, regardless of where they are located across the world.”

In response to NDLEA’s request, operatives of the US-DEA and UK-NCA have already joined the ongoing investigation, marking a new phase in the international collaboration against transnational drug trafficking networks.

NDLEA’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, who confirmed the development in a statement from the agency’s headquarters in Abuja, said the partnership underscores Nigeria’s commitment to strengthening global cooperation in the fight against drug trafficking.

Government shutdown to end soon? Democrats, Republicans give positive update before Senate vote

The Government shutdown, which has lasted over 40 days, might come to an end after Sunday's Senate vote. Sen John Thune, the Republican leader, admitted that a deal with the Democrats was ‘coming together’, but there was no guarantee.

This weekend has been productive. Chuck Schumer and the Democrats proposed a deal on Friday focused on protecting the Affordable Care Act for at least a year. But Thune and President Donald Trump refused to negotiate. However, it appears that the Republicans are preparing to present a legislative package that would reopen the government into January while also approving full-year funding for several parts of the government.

“A deal is coming together,” Thune said on Sunday. “We’ll see where the votes are.”

Where things stand?
Democratic leaders are pushing for an extension of subsidies for health plans offered under the Affordable Care Act marketplace. After initially rejecting the proposal, Republicans have now signalled some openness in exchange for a later vote on the ‘Obamacare’ subsidies that make coverage more affordable.

How many votes are needed to end the Government shutdown?
A government shutdown occurs when Congress fails to pass funding legislation by the deadline, halting non-essential operations. Ending it requires passing a spending bill or continuing resolution (CR) through Congress and a presidential signature. Here's a breakdown:

In the House of Representatives
Simple majority: 218 votes (out of 435 members), assuming a quorum of 218 is present. With vacancies or absences, it drops to a majority of those voting.

Process: Bills pass by majority; no filibuster exists. Recent CRs, like the September 2025 deal, passed 217-215.

In the Senate
60 votes: Needed to invoke cloture and end debate under Rule XXII, overcoming filibusters (unlimited debate). A simple majority (51 votes) suffices for final passage if no filibuster occurs, but 60 is the practical threshold for most funding bills.

Process: Debate can stall indefinitely without cloture. The 2025 shutdown CR cleared the Senate 67-33 after 60-vote cloture.

How many Democratic votes are needed in the Senate?
The Senate’s 53-47 split gives Republicans some control. They need at least seven Democrat/independent votes to pass a bill.

MetroOndo: Police bust s*x trafficking ring, rescue 15 girls
9th November 2025

No few than 15 girls have been rescued by the Ondo State Police Command after busting a s*x trafficking syndicate in the state during a sting operation.

During the operation at an apartment in Alagbaka area of Akure, the state capital, three suspects were arrested in connection with the trafficking ring, and one Jayeola Joshua identified as the prime suspect.

The suspects were said to be exploiting the victims with their ages ranging between 20 and 26 under the guise of job recruitment and social media content creation.

According to the Police Public Relations Officer in the state, Olayinka Ayanlade, the victims were manipulated to sending n**e images and videos, which were subsequently transmitted to clients procuring s*xual services.

Ayanlade emphasised that investigations revealed that the syndicate lured victims from across the country with false promises of lucrative employment, including domestic work, ushering services, and overseas placements.

While urging parents and guardians to verify job offers and recruitment agents before allowing their wards to travel, the command reaffirmed its determination to eradicate criminal networks engaged in human trafficking and s*xual exploitation in the state.

“The principal suspect reportedly received the largest share of the proceeds, while the operation was disguised as producing relationship content on social media.”

“Evidence indicates that the apartment was specifically rented to facilitate these activities, prompting the Commissioner of Police to direct that the landlords be invited for questioning as part of the ongoing investigation.

SPORTTransfer: Messi in shock move to join Osimhen at Galatasaray
7th November 2025

Inter Miami captain, Lionel Messi, could be set for a shock move to join Galatasaray.

According to Fotomac, the Turkish champions are looking to strike a deal to sign Messi on loan in January.

They want to offer the Argentina superstar playing time ahead of the 2026 World Cup.

Messi recently put pen to paper on a contract extension with Inter Miami that sees him commit his future until the end of the 2028 season, when he will turn 41.

Although this is likely to be the last contract in his career, Messi could yet feature in a new league.

But there has to been agreement between Messi, Inter Miami and Galatasaray.

The offer could prove tempting for Messi, as the MLS will soon see its post-season break, which could open the door for the eight-time Ballon d’Or winner to leave temporarily.

If it happens, he will be lining up alongside Super Eagles talisman, Victor Osimhen, in attack for the Yellow and Reds.

Osimhen again proved his worth for the team on Wednesday, as he netted his first-ever hat-trick in the Champions League, as they swept Ajax aside 3-0.
