The story of the Atlantic world in the 17th and 18th centuries cannot be told without addressing the two major systems of coerced labor that shaped it — indentured servitude and chattel slavery. Though both Irish indentured servants and African slaves shared a life of bo***ge in the New World, the differences between their conditions reveal a deeper hierarchy of race, law, and permanence that defined early modern colonial societies.

A World of Contracts and Chains

Indentured servitude was, in theory, a contractual arrangement. Poor Europeans — many from Ireland — signed agreements to work for a fixed number of years (usually between four and seven) in exchange for passage to the Americas, food, and lodging. As historian David W. Galenson notes, “Indentured servitude was the principal institution for the recruitment of labor in the seventeenth-century English colonies” (Galenson, “The Rise and Fall of Indentured Servitude in the Americas,” The Journal of Economic History, 1984)

Vatican Condemns Israel’s Gaza Offensive as “Ongoing Massacre”

The Vatican’s top diplomat has issued one of the strongest rebukes yet from the Catholic Church against Israel’s military campaign in Gaza, condemning what he described as an “ongoing massacre.”

In remarks published Monday, Cardinal Pietro Parolin — the Vatican’s Secretary of State — criticized Israel’s actions while simultaneously denouncing Hamas’ October 7, 2023 attacks on Israeli communities as “inhuman and indefensible.” He called on Hamas to release all remaining hostages.

“Those who are attacked have the right to defend themselves,” Parolin said, “but even legitimate defense must respect the principle of proportionality.”

Trump Says He Blocked London Mayor Khan From Windsor Castle Banquet

President Donald Trump claimed he blocked London Mayor Sadiq Khan from attending the Windsor Castle state banquet during his UK visit, calling him “one of the worst mayors in the world” and blaming him for rising crime in London. Khan’s team dismissed the comments as divisive politics, stressing London’s global success and popularity with Americans. Reports indicate Khan was never expected to attend the banquet, as London mayors are not typically invited.

The clash is the latest in a long-running feud between the two, dating back to Trump’s proposed Muslim ban in 2015 and continuing through disputes over terrorism, crime, and the Trump baby blimp protest. Trump’s remarks came after his helicopter experienced a minor technical issue before landing at Stansted Airport, which he joked about afterward.

China hosted the defense ministers of Iran and Russia on Thursday in the eastern port city of Qingdao, amid heightened global tensions fueled by ongoing conflict in the Middle East and a NATO summit in Europe that resulted in a pledge to increase defense spending.

The meeting took place under the banner of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO), a 10-member bloc that Beijing promotes as a strategic alternative to Western alliances. China has been working to deepen cooperation among SCO countries across areas such as security, politics, economics, and technology.

Israeli Airstrike Interrupts Live Iranian Broadcast, Sparks Accusations of “War Crime”

A live broadcast on Iranian state television was dramatically cut short on Monday when a powerful explosion rocked the studio mid-air, forcing the anchor to flee on camera. The incident, which quickly went viral online, occurred as the presenter was delivering pointed criticism of Israel’s recent military actions.

Footage shows dust flooding the studio following a loud blast, with the screen behind the anchor shattering moments before she runs off camera. The network immediately switched to prerecorded content.

Diamonds and Dominion: The Making of Colonial Southern Africa

The year 1870 can be regarded as a major turning point in the history of Southern Africa. It marked the beginning of a period of profound transformation, catalyzed by the discovery of diamonds (and later gold) in the region's interior—specifically in the area now known as Kimberley.

This discovery occurred amidst intense territorial rivalries involving multiple stakeholders: the Boers, primarily of Dutch descent; the British imperial authorities; and indigenous African communities, whose ancestral lands were increasingly coveted by both settler and imperial interests.

In his work South Africa: From the Great Trek to Union, J.D. Omer-Cooper captures the complexity of this development:

“In 1867, the chance discovery of a diamond started South Africa’s mineral boom and there was a rush to stake out claims to diamond diggings. The diamondiferous area fell within territory disputed between the Orange Free State, the Transvaal, the Griquas of Waterboer and two Tswana tribes.”

U.S. immigration officials detained and later permitted the “voluntary departure” of Khaby Lame, the world’s most-followed TikToker, after he allegedly overstayed his visa, authorities announced Saturday.

According to a statement from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) provided to AFP, Seringe Khabane Lame, 25, an Italian citizen, was taken into custody on June 6 at Harry Reid International Airport in Las Vegas, Nevada, due to immigration violations.
