38th State Security Council Meeting:Gov Diri Reiterates Zero Tolerance To Crime
.. appreciates collaborations
.. presents 31 vehicles to security agencies

Bayelsa State Governor, Senator Douye Diri, today presided over the 38th State Security Council meetings in Government House, Yenagoa.

Governor Diri, in his opening remarks, reiterated his commitment to zero crime and criminality in the state, calling on political class not to intervene when a criminal is arrested.

The governor, earlier, also boosted security operations with a formal presentation of 31 security vehicles to the service commanders.

"The synergy and collaboration that have existed even among the security agencies and overall between the security agencies and the government of the state is what has stood us out separately and let us continue that relationship and our government will continue with its matra, "Zero Tolerance To crime and Criminality", and none of that will be politicised.

Crime has no face of PDP and APC, a criminal is a criminal, and so let no political high ranking person intervene when a criminal is involved.

And I charge you if anybody does that, please, report to me and please don't take any of them and treat whoever has committed a crime as a criminal and let him face the law and that is the only way we can stamp out crime and criminality in our state and indeed in our country", Governor Diri said.

Slain Graduate Will Get Justice, Gov Diri Assures Family

Governor of Bayelsa State, Senator Douye Diri, has assured the family of slain 26-year-old Daniel Ayama that the state government will ensure they get justice.

Governor Diri gave the assurance on Wednesday when he visited the family over the killing of the fresh graduate of the Federal University, Otuoke, on May 16 at the INEC Junction in Yenagoa, the state capital.

The family claimed policemen were responsible for his death while the police authorities in the state said he was a victim of cult groups rivalry.

Senator Diri, who commiserated with the family at their residence in Kpansia, Yenagoa, said a thorough investigation will be conducted to unravel the circumstances surrounding his death.

The governor said the state’s Special Committee on Security and Human Rights Violations has commenced investigation into the matter and directed the State Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) to be involved in the probe.

He said: "For now there are two sides to the report of Daniel Ayama's murder and government will not take sides. Government is not interested in whether the police was allegedly responsible or it was a case of cult-related shooting.

"I know we have a Commissioner of Police that is responsible, apolitical, and has been maintaining peace and security in the state. But once you have this kind of report, the police need to step aside.

“This is a case of shooting and we want our law enforcement agencies to be strictly professional. It is sad to hear this type of allegation against a professional body that is expected to ensure peace and security of lives."

The state's helmsman also said that government had taken over the treatment of three other victims that sustained gunshot injuries during the incident and prayed God to grant the Ayama family the fortitude to bear the loss of their son.

Speaking on behalf of the family, Mr. Smart Ayama expressed gratitude to the governor and his entourage for the visit.

Mr. Ayama said there were protests following the incident but that the family decided against further demonstration as it would not bring back their son. He however called for justice to be done on the matter.

The governor was accompanied on the visit by the Chief of Staff, Government House, Dr. Peter Akpe, the Commissioner for Information, Strategy and Orientation, Mrs. Ebiuwou Koku-Obiyai, her counterparts on Youth Development, Alfred Nimizigha, Special Duties (Bayelsa West), Michael Magbisa, Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Chief Thompson Amule, as well as the Technical Adviser on Treasury, Revenue and Accounts, Timipre Seipulou among other top government functionaries.

FLOODING: BAYELSA GOVT. COMMENCES CLEARING OF CANALS

The Bayelsa State Government through the Directorate of Flood and Erosion Control has commenced the desilting of creeks and canals within Yenagoa and its environs to mitigate perennial flooding in the State.

Briefing newsmen during an onsite inspection by the Team of the
Directorate on Thursday May 22, 2025, the Director General of the Directorate of Flood and Erosion Control, Surv. Wilson Omuso, disclosed that clearing and cleanup begun in Goodnews Street and Agbura second bridge axis with more equipment already mobilized to other locations to commence work.

According to Surv. Omuso, by the Directorate's schedule, the clearing of the downstream canals, comprising three major cannals would be concluded before proceeding to the upstream canals.

The Director General added that while making observations and studies through geospatial means, the Directorate discovered that the downstream was made up of the three major canals which collect flood water from all other channels and let it into creeks and the sea in the State.

The Director General explained that water usually flows forcefully from the upstream to the downstream, pointing out that desilting the downstream canals first was necessary to allow free flow of water without obstruction, thereby preventing the damage.

On the Epie Creek, Surv. Omuso stated that the creek was deeper than normal canals and required more sophisticated machines capable of reaching the dept, assuring that, Government was making frantic efforts to acquire the proper equipment to desilt the creek. He assured that there are also plans to distil the Kolo and Tailor Creeks

Commenting on structures blocking canals, the Director General said the team was taking note of them and would report to Government for appropriate action to ensure a successful exercise.

He said that the state Government is committed to mitigating flooding in the State, adding that, all canals would be cleared to save residents from the devastating impact of flooding.

On his part, the Secretary of the Directorate, Mr. Daniel Tenemeni, advised residents to desist from dumping refuse into the water channels, warning that such act which he warned could lead to blockade and flooding.

Speaking, a Landlord at Goodnews Street where work was ongoing , Mr. Godwin Igiri, expressed joy over the exercise, stating that in the past the area was usually affected by flood, noting however, that the yearly desilting exercise of the Douye Diri-led Government has saved them from the impact. Mr. Igiri commended the Governor for the timely intervention.
