Bayelsa@30:Celebrating Legacies

Former President, Dr. Goodluck Ebele Jonathan, GCFR, is a true son of Bayelsa State and Ijaw land.

This much came to the fore when he was speaking about the 30th anniversary of the creation of the state. A man of history, Dr. Jonathan, succinctly put it, “Bayelsa today, has made steady progress. I am a witness to history and I know the agitation and struggle of our people for an Ijaw identity. Bayelsa started from nothing, absolutely, nothing and seeing what we have grown to be now, I am happy.”

Dr. Jonathan, who is a former Governor spoke about his vision for the three Senatorial Roads commencing with the Ekoli bridge at Swali and commended Governor Douye Diri, for his impact in the past few years.

Accordingly, the future of Bayelsa State is bright with sustenance of peace and unity among the citizens.

Senator Heineken Lokpobiri, Ph. D, was the first Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly in 1999 when the country returned to democratic rule. Recalling his experiences on the 30 years journey of Bayelsa State, and at the inauguration of the first Assembly on June 2, 1999, Lokpobiri said the lawmakers sat on plastic chairs within the small space provided as Assembly Complex.

Senator Lokpobiri, who later spent 8 years in the Red Chamber of the National Assembly representing Bayelsa West, served as Minister of state for Agriculture and currently, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Oil), said so much infrastructural development has taken place across the length and breadth of Bayelsa State and expressed the joy that the incumbent Governor, Senator Douye Diri, is taking up several legacy projects.

Senator Lokpobiri, also recalled that he was a young lawyer practising in Warri, Delta State at the time of creation of the state.

The political atmosphere in Angalabiri community, Sagbama Local Government Area, was electrified yesterday as the NDC candidate, *High Chief Seles Saboh*, arrived the community amidst massive jubilation and support.

The people of Angalabiri, elders to youths and women groups, trooped out in their numbers to welcome the candidate who they described as the man of the people.

Speaking during the reception, the council of Chiefs of Angalabiri and other community leaders expressed joy over Seles Saboh's visit, stating that Angalabiri has always stood with credible leadership and that Seles represents a new hope for the people of Sagbama/Ekeremor and Bayelsa State at large.

In his address, *Hgh Chief Seles Saboh*, visibly moved by the show of love, thanked the people of Angalabiri in sagbama LGA for their warm hospitality and for believing in his vision.
