If you are in your 40s or 50s and you have noticed that your body suddenly looks different , even though you have not changed what you eat or how you live , you are not imagining it.

Menopause is changing your body from the inside, and one of the most frustrating changes it brings is where your body decides to store fat.โœ…

Before menopause, most women store fat around their hips, thighs, and bottom. It is not always welcome, but that is where it tends to go.โœ…

Then menopause arrives , and everything shifts. Suddenly the fat that used to go to your hips is now going straight to your belly. Women who never had belly fat in their lives are waking up in their late 40s and early 50s wondering what happened. โœ…

What happened is oestrogen.๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œ๐Ÿ“Œโœ”๏ธ

Oestrogen is the hormone that, among many other things, controls where your body stores fat. When you are younger and your oestrogen levels are healthy, your body tends to store fat in the lower body , hips, thighs, buttocks. But as you approach menopause, your oestrogen levels drop significantly.

And when oestrogen drops, your body loses its preference for storing fat in the lower body. Instead it starts storing fat around the belly and the organs inside the abdomen.

This type of fat , called visceral fat , is not just a cosmetic problem. It is the type of fat that increases the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes.

On top of the oestrogen drop, menopause also brings changes in muscle mass. From your 40s onward, women naturally begin to lose muscle. And muscle is what keeps your metabolism running at a healthy speed.

Less muscle means a slower metabolism, which means your body burns fewer calories even when you are doing the same things you have always done. So the food that used to maintain your weight is now causing weight gain , not because you are eating more, but because your body is burning less.โœ…

Sleep also becomes a problem during menopause. Hot flashes, night sweats, and hormonal shifts disrupt sleep for many women.

And poor sleep raises cortisol , the stress hormone that encourages even more belly fat storage. So the belly grows not just from oestrogen loss but from poor sleep, stress, and slowing metabolism all happening at the same time.โœ…
