Early Warning Advisory on Flood Risk in Yola and Surrounding Communities 🚨
As the rainy season progresses into its critical peak months; August, September, and October (A*O), I strongly advise all those affected by the recent flood disaster across Yola South and Yola North LGAs not to return yet to their flooded homes or settle back into vulnerable floodplain areas.
While we understand the desire to go back home, the hydrological indicators are not favourable:
🌧️ We are just entering the core of the rainy season, and the ground is already saturated. With every additional rainfall, runoff increases, compounding flood risks.
🌊 The Choichi system, which flows from the Uki Hill into River Benue, is experiencing high inflows.
🛑 The Benue River floodplain is also gradually piling up water due to sustained rains in upstream locations, including tributaries like, Killange, Faro, and Gongola Sub-Basin. And we are yet to feel the full impact of inflows from Cameroon or the Upper Benue Basin.
📍Communities near flood-prone areas, including Lakare, Yolde-Pate, Modire, Shagari, Wuro Jabbe, Sabon Pegi, Vinikilang, Ngurore, Numan, Lamurde, Shelleng, must remain alert and adhere strictly to early warnings. Do not return to submerged or flood-threatened areas.
💡 Remember, early warning saves lives. Let’s prioritize safety over property.
