Since his appointment as Senior Special Assistant to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities, Hon. Mohammed Abba Isa has emerged as a tireless advocate for the welfare and inclusion of persons with disabilities, grounding his work firmly in the Renewed Hope Agenda of this administration.
In an interactive session with journalist in his office, Hon. Abba Isa thanked President president Tinubu for elevating disability representation and reinforcing inclusivity at the highest level of governance.
He pledged to transform the Renewed Hope Agenda into tangible progress for Nigerians living with disabilities a demographic encompassing an estimated 25 to 27 million citizens.
Abba Isa has launched systematic assessments of existing interventions for PwDs (persons with disabilities), ensuring future programmes align with actual community needs.
He is also spearheading measures to establish disability desk officers across ministries, departments, and agencies, alongside efforts to reserve employment quotas for PwDs and expand access to federal welfare and palliative schemes.
Furthermore the SSA is building PWDs’ capacity in social integration, job readiness, and facilitating gainful employment.
Abba Isa has also highlighted the foundational significance of the Discrimination Against Persons with Disabilities (Prohibition) Act, 2018, which was signed by former President Muhammadu Buhari on January 23, 2019. The act prohibits discrimination based on disability across public and private sectors, with penalties that will lead to jail terms.
Abba Isa praised the president for establishing the National Commission for Persons with Disabilities (NCPWD) as the lead agency for rights protection, policy coordination, and enforcement across 36 states and the FCT.
He continues to mobilize state governors, humanitarian agencies, transport authorities, and MDAs to adopt inclusive policies and implement accessibility standards nationwide ensuring that disability rights move from legislation to lived reality across Nigeria.
Under the umbrella of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, SSA Mohammed Abba Isa has positioned disability inclusion not just as a policy item but as a cornerstone of social justice, rebuilding, and inclusive national development.
