Children's day: Dr. Musa donates N200m to school pupils across Adamawa

In order to reduce the menace of out-of-school children in Adamawa State, foremost Adamawa humanitarian and philanthropist, Dr. Emmanuel N. Musa has donated N200 million to 200,000 pupils across the state in commemoration of this year's children's day.

The gesture according to the philanthropist is to remove some of the little encumbrances which contribute significantly to the menace of out-of-school children in the state.

Adamawa State which is one of the frontline states afflicted by Boko Haram insurgency has been grappling with the scourge of out-of-school.

Concerned over the development which has a debilitating portent on the future of the state, Dr. Musa deemed it fit to come to the rescue of the pupils through the distribution of N1000 handout to 200,000 pupils in the state aimed at enhancing school attendance.

The program, which is christened "Pupils Special welfare program" has elicited commendations and praises from a large creme of stakeholders in the education sector.

It could be recalled that Emnamu foundation the vehicle through which Dr. Musa is rolling out his humanitarian services to the citizens has unveiled an educational program tagged BACK TO CLASS Initiatives, aimed at bolstering school enrollment in the country, especially the North, which according to UNICEF, has over twelve million out-of- school children.

The program has so far enrolled over five thousand pupils across the North, and is envisaged to enroll ten thousand more, before the end of 2025.

According to reports from education experts, the program has abridged the identified gaps which militate the smooth dispensation of basic education in the north by providing basic learning materials such as books, pencils, pens and other writing materials, which are some of the identified stumbling blocks.

A stakeholder Dr. Halliru Bawa who expressed happiness with the intervention of Dr. Musa enthused that "with this intervention, so many pupils would turn up to continue with their educational pursuit."

The chairman, Committee of headmasters in Hong Local Government Area of Adamawa State Mr. Sale Buba during the distribution of the handout noted that such a timely intervention would solve numerous problems such as lack of hygienic toilets, which discourage some pupils from going to schools.

"I bet you, this would encourage a very huge turn up in the next couple of days," Buba said.

The National Coordinator, Emnamu Foundation, Comrade Kukuya Godwin expressed his satisfaction with the laudable initiative and the gap it has closed.

He further said, the intervention has enabled the foundation come up with first hand data on the general condition of learning of the pupils, rate of school enrollment and associated factors.

Godwin also noted that they were also able to identify some other critical gaps in the education system such as teachers to pupil ratio and will in the nearest future formulate suitable policies to address these menaces.

"We have seen it all. Some without shoes, some with no writing materials, some with torn uniforms, some cannot afford to buy even detergent to wash their uniforms among others.

"This would no doubt solve numerous problems and make us to be abreast with their challenges and how to foster viable solutions to them," he added.

Subsidy removal: Adamawa kicks off comprehensive palliative program

Procures 10 Innoson shuttle buses @ N1.06bn

In its determination to bring succour to residents of the state following the subsidy removal imposed on premium motor spirit (PMS) otherwise known as petrol, Adamawa State government has today unveiled a comprehensive palliative program.

Dissecting the components of the program, the secretary to Adamawa State Government (SSG), who doubles as the chairman of the committee, Awwal D. Tukur said the multi prong approach will provide succour in multi dimensional areas including transport and subsidized food and non food items to all the 266 wards across the state.

According to the SSG, to subsidize the cost of transportation which has spiralled in the aftermath of the subsidy removal, the state government has procured 10 Innoson shuttle buses at the cost of N1.06bn which when deployed will ease the suffering of civil servants, students and other low income earners in the state capital.

He noted that the core goal of the exercise is to bring relief to the most vulnerable members of the society including orphans, widows, people living with disability, boarding schools, women and youth groups adding that eight groups will benefit from the program.

The SSG said in order to ensure an all encompassing program which carries everyone along, the distribution of the palliatives will be done in wards adding that local governments with high number of wards will receive higher packages.

He added that the distribution of the palliatives will be data driven as the committee has obtained substantial data after it's inauguration adding that upon validating the data, the committee will swiftly swing into action expectedly from Tuesday.

Tukur said one of the most important component of the palliative is the constitution of an independent monitoring and evaluation committee charged with the responsibility of providing feedback and guidance so as to improve on areas of strengths and strengthen identified weaknesses.

The SSG noted that so far the federal government has made available the sum of N2bn palliative in addition to five trucks of rice noting that in addition, the state government has procured 50 trucks to complement the federal government's gesture.

He added that in order to ensure the sustainability of the program, the state government will crash the cost of the items by 50 percent adding that a 25kg rice with market value of N20,000 will sell at N10,000 only.

Tukur said the state government has earmarked N1.4bn to procure 50 trucks of rice which is equivalent to 1,500 metric tonnes of the commodity.

He assured the people that the process of the palliatives distribution will be 100 percent transparent calling on journalists to also monitor the process and ask relevant questions whenever they are in doubt.

Nigeria still losing $4m worth of crude oil daily to local, foreign thieves – Ribadu

The National Security Adviser (NSA), Malam Nuhu Ribadu, has said that the country is still losing 400,000 barrels of crude oil worth $4 Million per day to local and international thieves, despite efforts to end the menace.

Nuhu Ribadu made this known yesterday when he led a presidential delegation to inspect oil and gas facilities at Owaza in Abia and Odogwa in Etche Local Government Area of Rivers State.

He said that the activities of oil thieves and pipeline vandals have impacted negatively on the nation’s economy and are partly responsible for the rising cost of living in the country.

“It’s unfortunate that few individuals would steal our common resources, and in the process cause unbelievable loss to both the nation, communities and the people.

“Nigeria has the capacity to produce 2 million barrels of crude daily, but we are currently producing less than 1.6 million barrels due to theft and vandalism of pipelines.

“So, we are talking about 400,000 barrels of crude oil going to waste with few criminals and economic saboteurs not even getting much out of it.”

Nuhu Ribadu said that the operators of artisanal refineries collect a small quantity of crude oil when they broke the pipelines while larger volumes of oil were spilled on the environment.

“The value of 400,000 barrels of oil today is about 4 million dollars, and every day, we lose this amount because of this irresponsible behaviour.

“If you multiply 4 million dollars by 365 days (one year), you will see that it is a lot of money running into billions of dollars.

“Currently, the country is in desperate need of money as the Naira is continuously losing its value because we earn less money.

“If we earn more money, it will not only help strengthen our currency but reflect in everything, including cost of living in the country."

The NSA said that the President Bola Tinubu administration is concerned about the development and is already taking actionable steps to address the matter.

He said that huge investments made by the government in building infrastructures for the common good of all are being destroyed by few individuals, and in the process, destroying the environment.

Nuhu Ribadu called for a united front to tackle oil theft and end decades of attacks on the nation’s oil and gas infrastructures.

“We are working hard with the security forces and those employed by the Nigerian National Petroleum Company (NNPC) Limited to secure our facilities and end this madness called oil theft.”
On the presidential delegation with the NSA were the Minister of Defence, Badaru Abubakar and Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), General Christopher Musa.

Others included the Chief of Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Hassan Abubakar; Minister of State for Defence, Bello Matawalle and Minister of State (Oil), Petroleum Resources, Heineken Lokpobiri.

The Minister of State (Gas), Petroleum Resources, Ekperipe Ekpo and senior management officials of the NNPCL as well as other top security personnel were part of tbe team.

Good governance: Zamfara information commissioner embarks on nat'l media tour

In its determination to attain its cardinal goal which is the entrenchment of good governance, Zamfara State government is working strenuously to enlist the support of the Nigerian media.

To that effect, the commissioner of information and culture, Comrade Mannir Muazu Haidara alongside the permanent secretary of the ministry have embarked on official engagement with various media outlets in Kaduna, Abuja and Lagos.

During the visit which starts in Kaduna at the Head office of Nigeria’s most investigative newspaper and magazine Desert Herald, the commissioner in the presence of 24/7 Report, Fact Check news and other reputable online and national dailies said, “We are here as partners for progress to thank you for the objective reportage of various activities in Zamfara state especially during the electioneering period which saw the emergence of my boss His Excellency, Governor Dauda Lawal Dare"

Haidara, further, sought for continued and harmonious relationship with the company and other players in showcasing the lofty programs of Governor Dauda Dare.

He noted that it becomes imperative for the government to work side by side with the media in view of the massive plunder of the state resources which left it economically prostrate and at a tipping point.

“We believed, information is power, and a great weapon, for achieving good governance. Because of the deep respect he has for the media and its place in fostering national unity and cohesion, his excellency gave me the nod to reach out to all media outlets across the country.

"The governor is very keen to allow a seamless coverage of the activities of the state and its good people in his resolve to bring a paradigm shift to the old order and widen the governance space," he said.

Also speaking, the permanent secretary of the ministry, Barrister Sani Nasarawa, commended the governor for the consistent support to the ministry in discharging its primary responsibility of sharing positive information about the state and his core goal of bequeathing a lasting legacy.

He appealed on the good people of Zamfara State to continue pray against the enemies of the state who are hell bent in in setting the hand of the clock backwards noting that the governor is working round the clock to ensure the restoration of peace to the state.

Muslim students decry Hijab ban in college of nursing & midwifery Yola

Muslim Students under the auspices of Muslim Students Society of Nigeria, (MSSN) have decried the alleged usurpation of the fundamental rights of female Muslim students in the college of nursing and midwifery Yola by the provost of the collage, Mrs Lami Aminu.

In a letter dated August 25, 2023 addressed to the provost, the Amir of MSSN Adamawa area unit, Mukhtari Adamu urged the school management to make a detour in the interest of peace, religious freedom and respect for the fundamental rights of the affected students.

In the letter entitled "Seizure and denial of wearing of the hijab by students within the school premises, an infringement of human rights and call for immediate stoppage," MSSN said, if allowed to prevail, such disregard can degenerate to a serious security threat.

"We are constrained to address this letter to you viewing the recent happenings in the College and to forestall the infringement of human rights and impending security deterioration.

"We have been following trends of events in the College and were also reliably informed that female students who wear Hijab within the school premises have their Hijabs not only being seized but are also harassed and intimidated with abuses beyond what an ordinary mind will conceive.

"The practice of denying students who desire to wear Hijab in school is not new and it has generated controversy that the College leadership is supposed to be conscious of. We are not unaware of the efforts of some members of your staff who drew your attention to the case at hand wherein you promised them that it will not happen in your time henceforth as a Provost of the College.

"However, we are astonished to hear that it was you the Provost who stood at the College gate and denied some of the students who choose to wear their Hijab their lawful right of ingress to the College.

"It is without doubt, this has generated a lot of emotions and unwarranted tension within and outside the school. Thus, the issue of human rights denial and religious freedom as enshrined in our Constitution is put to question by the leadership you are exhibiting in the College.

"This invariably raises concerns over the security apprehension. For your guidance, the use of Hijab apart from being a Constitutional issue which has long been put to rest by the Apex Court, the Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria through its Circular dated 23rd December, 2022 with Reference Number N&MCN/SG/RO/GC/13/VOL.9/127 has sanctioned the use of Hijab even on Uniform not to talk of wearing it within the College premises," the statement said.

The students noted that they will not fold their arms against a glaring abuse of the rights of the Muslim students with impunity despite the fact that their action of using Hijab is not a constitutional aberration.

"We Muslim Students’ Society of Nigeria, our core mandate is to help the school to entrench what is right and morally accepted within the ambit of the law, we will not hold our arms akimbo and shut our mouths when it is crystal clear that rights as enshrined in the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria are being trampled upon either by an individual, group or institution.

"We have inherent powers to draw the attention of the authorities to put a stop to this unwholesome practice targeted at some group of people either because of their belief or culture. Your action and some of your staff is not only unconstitutional, but also presents danger to the fragile peace we are witnessing in the College and the State at large.

"While previous action championed by you and some of the staff of the College is being reviewed by the Society, we call for immediate and forthwith stoppage of the act and allow the students to wear what is right and acceptable within the boundaries of the law as the rules of the College cannot override the Constitutional provisions, in other words the laws of the land (Constitution) supersedes any rule made by the College no matter how good it is intended so long as it conflicts with it.

"We are calling on you and any other person to desist from this act and to accordingly rescind it, otherwise we will be compelled to take steps to enforce the rights of any student who desires to wear her Hijab within the school premises and will equally report you to relevant authorities for undermining the peace of the State," the statement said.

Efforts to get the reaction of the provost proved abortive as multiple calls to her phone number were either not picked or fail to connect.

Similarly, both SMS and Whatsapp messages sent to her number since Saturday were not responded to despite the fact that her Whatsapp number indicated that the message was read.
