Covenant University Bans Cooking and Phone Ownership for Students

Ota, Nigeria - Covenant University’s long-standing policies banning mobile phones and cooking appliances on campus are tied to its vision of discipline and focus. According to the handbook, the idea is to reduce distractions from social media, keep dormitories safe, and create an environment where students can concentrate fully on academics. The school points out that it provides alternatives, like official communication channels and dining facilities as part of its effort to support student success.

But not everyone agrees. Some students and observers see these rules as outdated and overly restrictive. For instance, the phone ban is often criticized for making it harder to reach family in emergencies or even access online academic resources, skills that are crucial in today’s digital world. The cooking ban, meant to prevent fire hazards, has also sparked frustration, with students complaining about the lack of flexibility and the extra costs of depending solely on the cafeteria.

Supporters, including administrators, argue that these strict rules have helped build Covenant’s reputation for academic excellence and high graduation rates. They believe the controlled environment is part of what sets the university apart. Still, critics insist that reviewing these policies is long overdue. In their view, a more modern, trust-based approach would better prepare students for independence and life in a digitally connected society.

🇳🇬 FG Condemns '"mmoral Sign-Out" Culture

The Federal Government, through the National Orientation Agency (NOA), has condemned the growing trend of "immoral sign-out" celebrations among students. The NOA says these acts are against Nigeria's core national values.

The agency specifically called out the practice of students writing on inappropriate parts of their colleagues' bodies. The government is working on a new National Values Charter to promote discipline and positive values.

Parents and school administrators are urged to join the effort to curb this trend and teach students honorable behavior.
This move follows similar actions by several Nigerian universities and state governments that have already banned or restricted these celebrations due to concerns over public decency, security, and rowdiness.
