PEVA BERANDA MARKET TRAGEDY: EIGHT LIVES LOST AS SECURITY AND GOVERNMENT FAILURES COLLIDE
Wednesday, 26 August 2026, has become another tragic day for the people of Peva. About eight people, including women and children, lost their lives, while numerous others were injured after a military gun truck crashed into people inside the crowded Peva Beranda Market.
The military personnel involved are from FOB Wukari and not permanently deployed in Peva. Their presence is limited to Wednesdays, when they es**rt buyers travelling from Wukari to Peva Market because of the worsening insecurity along the route and around the community. After the market activities, they leave the area the same day.
This temporary es**rt arrangement exists because the people of Peva have been living under a frightening security situation, with repeated attacks by suspected Fulani assailants and other criminal activities occurring around the community. Despite this worsening insecurity, the Taraba State Government has failed to provide the people with adequate and permanent security infrastructure capable of protecting lives, property and economic activities.
Today, the very security arrangement that was meant to provide protection ended in another devastating loss of civilian lives.
Findings surrounding the incident indicate that soldiers assigned to the es**rt operation had been consuming alcoholic drinks at their usual location in the market before the tragedy. The driver subsequently started the military gun truck and lost control while moving through the crowded market, crushing people in its path.
The situation became even more tragic when an angry crowd reacted to the initial deaths and injuries. As the soldiers attempted to escape the confrontation, the gun truck reportedly accelerated through the crowded market, causing further casualties.
