It’s Monday, and we’re starting the week with a new title in stock.

CALL HIM HAFIZ
Ahmed Maiwada

Blending memoir, fiction, criticism and theology, Call Him HAFIZ is a reflective novel about faith and doubt, family loyalty and betrayal, addiction and art. Moving between Wusasa and Zaria City and through decades of memory, it becomes a meditation on Zaria, its people and its exiles–and on the difficult question of who has the right to end another person’s story.

If you enjoy literary fiction rooted in place, memory, family and difficult questions, this is one to look out for.

What better way to celebrate four years of Bookish Alchemy and the opening of our space than by gathering around the table – not just to eat, but to share stories, laughter, music, ideas and good company?

This Saturday, we are opening our doors and inviting you to dine with us on the metaphorical table we have been setting for four years – a table built with books, creativity, conversations, friendships and community.

There will be karaoke, performances, games, food, laughter and plenty of fun as we celebrate how far we have come and, most importantly, the people who have made the journey worthwhile.

Come as you are. Bring a friend. Bring your stories. And if you can, bring a small carpet/mat for yourself and a friend – we want you comfortable as we sit, unwind and celebrate together.

There is room at the table.... Join us

When the palace meets politics, who really holds the power?

In Northern Nigeria, the transition from colonial rule to independence was not simply a change of government. It was a struggle over authority, influence and the future of traditional institutions.

Emirs and Politicians examines the uneasy relationship between Northern Nigeria’s emirate aristocracies and the emerging political class in the 1950s and early years of independence. As party politicians challenged the old order, emirs who had long enjoyed considerable authority and privileges were forced to confront a rapidly changing political landscape.

Drawing extensively from primary sources, this book takes you into the power struggles, reforms, purges and political negotiations that reshaped the position of the emirs between decolonisation and the First Republic.

If you’re interested in Northern Nigerian history, emirate institutions, traditional leadership, politics, colonial legacies and the contest for political power, this is one to have on your shelf.

Emirs and Politicians — ₦10,000

And yes, this is the kind of book that gives you more than a story—it gives you context for understanding some of the institutions and power structures that still shape Northern Nigeria today.
