Former governor of Rivers state, Nyesom Wike is desperate to regain control of the Rivers state executive power, a move which has now reportedly pitched him against president Tinubu who had told the two parties to maintain status quo.

According to an inner source privy to the development, Wike is indirectly trying to test president Bola Ahmed Tinubu by his recent moves in Rivers state against governor Sim Fubara.

“He is testing the water. The president had directed the parties to maintain status quo – everyone has been duly compensated:Wike, the lawmakers, Ibas has been nominated for ambassador. President Tinubu is not happy”, he said

The relationship between governor Sim Fubara and the members of the Rivers state house of assembly led by Martin Chike Amaewhule deteriorated, resulting in renewed political crisis in the state and underground move by the Rivers state house of assembly members loyal to Wike to impeach governor Sim Fubara.

Recently, the Martin Amaewhule led House announced its endorsement of president Tinubu for second term – this endorsement was followed by the speaker’s defection to the All Progressive Congress (APC) alongside with sixteen other lawmakers. This move has been linked to Wike’s renewed aggression against governor Sim Fubara who he has vowed to see to his impeached in the first quarter of 2026.

The speaker of the Rivers state house of assembly, Martin Amaewhule recently criticized governor Sim Fubara for his inability to present to the House the 2026 appropriation bill. Martin Amaewhule would thereafter announce that the Rivers state house of assembly will be going on recess until January 2026, implying that the house will no longer sit this year to grant governor Fubara the opportunity to present the state’s budget for 2026. This move has been understood to be a trap against Fubara who will be accused by the lawmakers in 2026 of spending from unapproved budget; an allegation that will be used as the ground for his impeachment.

Wike Feels Sabotaged By The Presidency

“Wike believes that the president rather than support him to remove Fubara, is shielding him and has even made him loyal to him”, the source said

FCT minister, Nyesom Wike feels that he has been sabotaged by the presidency. Following the declaration of state of emergency and suspension of governor Sim Fubara, his deputy and the lawmakers by president Bola Ahmed in March, 2025, Nyesom Wike was to nominate a sole administrator over Rivers state who would be in charge of the state for six months as a way of compensating the former governor for Fubara’s disloyalty. Nyesom Wike would during this period, recover all he claimed to have spent on Fubara’s campaign – the Rivers state treasury was replaced into his hands through the sole administrator –vice admiral Ibok Ekwe Ibas. The sole administrator would also compensate the 27 Rivers state house of assembly members in cash and in kind– they were to be given outrageous sum for constituency projects and gifted official cars–an act Fubara had deliberately ignored

EFCC ARREST CUSTOMS BOSS IMPERSONATOR

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested one Azeez Yakubu Afolayan for impersonating the Comptroller General, Nigeria Customs Service, Col. Hameed Ali (rtd) and using his name to scam job seekers.

A statement on Tuesday by the acting EFCC spokesman, Tony Orilade said Afolayan was arrested by EFCC operatives of its Ilorin Zonal Office Kwara state on February 20th, 2019, following complaints from one of his victims.

He explained that trouble started for him when a staff of the Customs Service, Hassan Garba Muhammed petitioned the EFCC, accusing him of defrauding innocent Nigerians, seeking employment into the Service. He had so far defrauded them of about N1 million.

He said, “Under interrogation, he admitted to the crime,” Orilade quoted him as saying, “I started duping people since 2017 up till date, I duped about five people, I collected different amount of money from my victims and all of them used to transfer money to my bank accounts."

“I used to tell them that I will help them to secure employment with the Nigerian Custom Services, but I was just scamming,” Orilade quoted.

He said some of the items recovered from him include, Nigerian Customs Service Application Forms, Customs employment letters, passports of some job seekers among others, adding that he will soon be charged to court.

Nigeria Decides: Buhari withdraws from presidential race, gives reason

The presidential candidate of the Sustainable National Party (SNP), Ahmed Buhari has finally withdrawn from the Feb. 16 presidential election.
Buhari made his decision known in an interview with SUNRISE daily, a breakfast show on Channels Television.
On why he stepped down, Buhari said his decision is to drum support for the All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Muhammadu Buhari.
Acording to Ahmed Buhari, he is stepping down from the race because he believes that president Buhari is the right man for the job, NAN reports.
He noted that the Buhari government has also made some gains in the last four years it came on board in the country.
The former SNP presidential candidate accused Nigerian youths of not backing young persons for the presidency.
He regretted his lack of resources to compete with the APC and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
It would be recalled that Ahmed Buhari was once a member of the main opposition PDP but left for the SNP to fulfill his dream of becoming the country’s leader.

But, Kingsley Nwagu, the Vice Presidential candidate of the SNP distanced himself from the decision of his presidential candidate to support President Buhari.
Nwagu told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone interview that Ahmed Buhari was alone in his decision and that the party had replaced him with Jaiye Gasikiya who was the runner-up during the presidential primary election.
“We are still in the race; Ahmed Buhari acted on his own without the party’s consent, so, as it is, the party has not adopted any candidate neither will it adopt.
“But if it will, it is left for the party to decide; we have already written to INEC and we are elevating Jaiye Gaskiya who contested primary election with Ahmed Buhari.
“INEC is yet to respond to our letter notifying them of the development in the party, and we expect a positive response from them.
“As it is, the ballot papers carry only the parties’ logo and as such we are calling on all our members nationwide to still thumbprint on our party logo,” Nwagu said.
Feb. 16 presidential race would see President Buhari of the APC, Atiku Abubakar of the PDP and other aspirants slugging it out for the country’s number one seat on Saturday.
