🎙️Misinformation. Perhaps one of the greatest threats of our time.

False information, rumours, and manipulated stories are not new. During World War II, disinformation played a powerful role in shaping expectations, decisions, and actions.

But what happens when even official authorities act on incorrect information?

In the Netherlands, this led to one of the most chaotic days of the Second World War: Dolle Dinsdag (Mad Tuesday). A day of confusion, panic, and false expectations that changed the course of events for many people.

📍 What a great start! I had the chance to guide a group during my very first try-out of Recovering Footsteps of Lost Airmen in Flevoland.

Sharing the stories of Allied airmen and the layered history of the polder, and seeing people truly connect with the places and narratives, made this such a meaningful experience.

A big thank you to the group for your enthusiasm and feedback. From here, things are really beginning to take shape.

Today we remember.

We take a moment to reflect on what freedom truly means and how fragile it is.

We remember those who came before us and those who are no longer here.

Freedom asks something of us. A shared responsibility not to take it for granted. To stay aware, to care, and to keep seeing one another always as human.

In remembering, we choose to remain present. To resist indifference. And to carry these values forward.

So that what freedom stands for is not only protected, but passed on to the generations that come after us.

And so, we remember...

What happened to Dutch celebrations during the Second World War? In this episode, Lilian and her 12-year-old co-host Colin explore how traditions like Sinterklaas, the Elfstedentocht, Queen’s Day and Carnival continued during occupation.

Even under strict rules and hardship, people found ways to celebrate, sometimes openly, often in secret, and as quiet acts of resistance.

We also explore the role of the RAF, who dropped propaganda leaflets over the Netherlands bringing messages of hope and freedom.

Today we celebrate King's Day.

During World War II, this celebration was forbidden. The German occupiers did not want the Dutch to express national pride or honour the royal family. Still, people found quiet ways to resist. Wearing orange or marking the day in subtle ways became a form of silent protest.

There are also stories of the Royal Air Force dropping orange propaganda leaflets over the Netherlands, encouraging resistance and boosting morale.

In our upcoming episode, we’ll explore Queen's day during the occupation. And we also dive into other celebrations, that were affected by the war.
