New eight-piece ensemble pays tribute to the legendary trumpeter.

Johanna Elina Sulkunen vocal, Snorri Sigurðarson trumpet, Tomasz Dąbrowski trumpet, Thomas Hass saxophone, Artur Tuźnik piano, Martin Fabricius vibraphone, Richard Andersson double bass, Radek Wośko drums

The introspective, soulful playing of Tomasz Stańko remains influential. Tomasz Stańko Experience is dedicated to the legendary trumpeter, who passed away in 2018. The project has a remarkable origin story: ten years ago, eight musicians followed a workshop led by Stańko in Denmark. Beautiful recordings of that event have recently resurfaced and will be released on two albums. The musicians that participated back then will now perform a selection of this music under the name Scandinavian Art Ensemble.

In the part Polish, part Scandinavian ensemble, a central place will be reserved for trumpeter Tomasz Dąbrowski, who had a unique relationship with the master. “It’s about preserving the spirit of Stańko—his generosity, his curiosity, his way of bringing people together”, says Dąbrowski about this project. “Even after all these years, his presence can still be felt in every note we play.” Alongside original compositions by the members, the program will obviously include music by the maestro himself.

American all-star band led by renowned double bassist, who balances melody and freedom.

Logan Richardson alto sax, Seamus Blake tenor sax, Joe Sanders bass, Greg Hutchinson drums

For Joe Sanders, Parallels started with an improvised solo he played as an encore at a concert, after which the audience kept singing the melody. On the eponymous album he lets different ideas coexist. Beautiful tunes and experimental sounds, for example, or a dark atmosphere and a cheerful tonality, but also amateurism and professionalism: on the track ‘La vie sur la terre’ his little son Elioté plays along on melodica.

Parallels developed into a band featuring absolute masters of American jazz: Seamus Blake, Gregory Hutchinson and Logan Richardson have each built their own impressive career as a band leader. Joes Sanders has previously performed on our stage in the bands of Gerald Clayton, Kendrick Scott and Ben Wendel, among others. In 2023 he made his first appearance with saxophone giant Joshua Redman on the Blue Note album Where Are We.

Versatile American star pianist leads the Rising Star Jazz Group of the Year in the Downbeat Critics Poll.

Sullivan Fortner piano, Tyrone Allen bass, Kayvan Gordon drums

Pianist Sullivan Fortner describes his core principles as a belief in swing and the power and majesty of the blues. His talent became apparent while playing in the King Solomon Baptist Church in New Orleans. For years he accompanied star players of American jazz such as Roy Hargrove, Christian Scott, and Stefon Harris. Through that he developed his versatile and virtuosic style. Now he will come to the fore with his trio, which was voted Rising Star Jazz Group of the Year in the most recent Downbeat Critics Poll.

Sullivan Fortner won a Grammy for his contribution to The Window, the album that he created with the young jazz diva Cécile McLorin Salvant. Together they gave a memorable duo performance on our stage. He also played here with Roy Hargrove, John Scofield, Peter Bernstein, and Ben Wendel. Previously he has reached the top position in the Downbeat Critics Polls in no less than three categories: Rising Star Jazz Artist, Rising Star Pianist and Rising Star Arranger. The new album by the Sullivan Fortner Trio will appear on the Artwork/PIAS label.

‘The goal is to start to break the barriers of genre. I’m trying to dispel all of these rules and say, “Look at these songs as just songs and look at music as just music. Get your hands dirty with deconstructing things, with reconstructing things.” We definitely have a good time with it’ (Sullivan Fortner in an interview with Downbeat, September 2024).

Tribute to the survivors and the dreamers, fusing vocals and strings.

Nawras Altaky oud/vocals, Oene Van Geel viola/trombone, Teis Semey guitar, Marianne Noordink ney/flute, Kinan Abuakel buzuk, Remy Dielemans double bass, Udo Demandt percussion

In the BIMHUIS Productions series REFLEX we invite musicians to reflect on the world and society. This edition revolves around the new compositions for the project premiere ‘Arise!’ by Nawras Altaky. Coming from Syria, the singer and player of the oud, the Arabic lute, formed his own ensemble with well-known musicians from The Netherlands.

‘Arise!’ is a tribute to the unwavering spirit of survivors around the world, a reminder that within each of us lies the potential for greatness, waiting for an opportunity to blossom. Nawras dedicates this performance to all those who dare to dream, who keep their hope alive, and who contribute their unique light to the journey of life.

What makes Nawras Altaky’s music and improvisations special is the way he organically combines jazz, Arabic maqam, classical counterpoint and elements from contemporary music. His enemble features players that have appeared on our stage before, such as viola player Oene van Geel and guitarist Teis Semey.

‘Altaky has a fascinating, warm baritone with which he can sing with breathtaking, colourful softness, effectively building up tension through his sublime sense of timing’ (NRC).

REFLEX is supported by Ammodo.
