Afgelopen zondag waren historisch blazersensemble Oltremontano en harpiste/zangeres/dirigent Barbora Kabátková te gast bij Podium Klassiek!
In 2017 stelde het Museum voor Schone Kunsten van Antwerpen Oltremontano aan als artist in residence voor vijf jaar. Artistiek leider Wim Becu kwam zo in contact met de recente restauratie van het retabel “God de vader met zingende en musicerende engelen” van Hans Memling (ca.1480-90).
Dit inspireerde hem om een interdisciplinair project op te zetten en alle afgebeelde muziekinstrumenten minutieus te laten nabouwen.
In Podium Klassiek wordt uitgelegd hoe dat in zijn werk ging!

New release Friday! The new album of bandoneon player Gwen Cresens has just been released.

With Refugio, his new solo album, Gwen Cresens opens the door to the inner world of the bandoneon: an instrument that breathes, suffers, dreams, and comforts. In this intimate collection of seven pieces, played on a hybrid bandoneon developed and built by Harry Geuns, Cresens searches for the essence of sound and emotion.

The title Refugio – Spanish for refuge – is more than a reference to Juan Carlos Cobiàn's piece Mi refugio: it depicts the bandoneon itself as a place of peace, remembrance, and tranquility. A place where melancholy and beauty merge, where music envelops and protects you.
Recorded by Stef Van Alsenoy in a 12th-century chapel on a mountain in the Auvergne, it features a beautiful natural reverb that compels Gwen Cresens to slow down, to breathe even more deeply into the music.

Today Dutch saxophonist Floriaan Wempe releases the first single of his upcoming project ‘The Light of Day’! His apprenticeship with the likes of Roy Hargrove and Philip Harper have provided him with experience, skill and inspiration which clearly notice when listening to ‘The Observer’. ‘The Observer’ is about listening without prejudice and judgement. It’s melodic drenched in swing and improvisation. The track features Rob van Bavel, Willie Jones III, Steve Zwanink, Rodolfo Ferreira Neves!

In 2021 brachten Jasper Staps en zijn Paradox Jazz Orchestra hun eerste ode aan de legendarische bigband The Skymasters! Vandaag is het laatste deel 'The Vocal Years' uitgebracht. Van 1978 tot en met 1986 verzorgden The Skymasters (opgericht in 1945!) voor de AVRO het wekelijkse jazzprogramma Swingtime, vanuit Nick Vollebregt's Jazzcafé te Laren. De muziek die speciaal The Skymasters werd geschreven, is herontdekt door dirigent Jasper Staps: uniek materiaal!

Voor 'The Vocal Years' is zangeres Anna Serierse uitgenodigd. Het is een ode aan alle zangeressen die met The Skymasters hebben samengewerkt waaronder Joke Bruijs, Greetje Kauffeld, Rita Reys, Rachel Gould en Marjorie Barnes.

Zondag 12 oktober is de albumpresentatie in Nick Vollebregt's Jazzcafé!!!

Vandaag is eindelijk het langverwachte album van dirigent Raphaël Pichon en zijn ensemble Pygmalion uitgebracht: Brahms' Ein deutsches Requiem!
De Nederlandse première was in het Amsterdamse Concertgebouw op 13 november 2021.
Dagblad Trouw (5 sterren!) over dit album: 'Pygmalion zet nieuwe standaard in Brahms’ Requiem'
Dagblad NRC (ook 5 sterren!) over dit album: 'Met Brahms flikt Pygmalion het wéér' en 'Om te beginnen is het nuttig om te constateren dat een nieuw album van dirigent Raphaël Pichon en zijn ensemble Pygmalion een ‘evenement’ is in de wereld van de klassieke muziek.' Aldus Joep Stapel.

Last Monday Dutch duo Blue Sands won an Edison Award!!! (This Dutch award is comparable to the American Grammy Award, the German Echo or the British Brit Awards.)
Congratulations to Esther Van Hees & Reindert Kragt and their label ZenneZ Records!!!
The jury wrote about their winning album 'For You':
The surprise isn't that Esther van Hees is a fascinating singer, and that Reindert Kragt is a fantastic bass guitarist. The surprise is, first of all, that such a diverse repertoire nevertheless yields a highly coherent album, but above all, the incredible musical richness this duo, along with a few top guests, produces; virtuoso, emotionally charged, and with a magnificent imagination.

Graham Ross brings together the Choir of Clare College, Cambridge (the celebrated choral institution that the composer himself directed in the mid-1970s) and The Dmitri Ensemble to pay homage to this great gentleman of modern musical history with a wide range of his works, some of them recorded here for the very first time.

A loyal partner of the ONDIF (Orchestre national d'Île-de-France conducted by the wonderful Case Scaglione) for some years now, Simone Lamsma is without doubt one of the most talented violinists of her generation.

The charisma of her performance of Sibelius’s Concerto in D minor dazzled the audience at the Philharmonie de Paris in 2020. Captured right after in the studio, here it is restored in all its boldness and singular sensitivity.
