A Powerful Tunisian Presence at the 46th Cairo International Film Festival

Tunisia made a standout appearance at CIFF46, participating across competition sections, the jury, and industry meetings — confirming its position as one of the most dynamic and daring film industries in the Arab world.

🎬 International Competition

🎬 Official Selection – Out of Competition (Closing Film)

Film Review | “Once Upon a Time in Gaza”

A bold, deeply emotional Palestinian crime drama by Tarzan & Arab Nasser, blending thriller, satire, and raw political reality into a powerful portrait of life under siege.

Set between 2007 and 2009, the film follows Osama and Yahya, two friends whose lives spiral after a clash with a corrupt police officer. What begins as a crime story transforms into a film-within-a-film — where Yahya is cast as the hero of an action movie he never wanted to be in, mirroring the trapped dreams of an entire generation in Gaza.

The Nasser Brothers deliver a moving, multilayered narrative about identity, resistance, and the everyday struggle to stay human under occupation. It is a tribute to Gazans who insist on living with dignity, even when the world tries to silence their dreams.

“With El-Sett, We’re Bringing Back Female-Led Cinema.”

In a powerful Cairo Industry Days session, acclaimed novelist and screenwriter Ahmed Mourad () reflected on his creative journey — from a childhood shaped by photography to becoming one of the Arab world’s most influential storytellers.

Mourad revealed how his writing process begins visually, imagining scenes as photographs before turning them into prose, and later into cinema. He emphasized that writers today cannot be trapped in one genre, arguing that blending categories is the key to surprising audiences in an era dominated by digital platforms.

He confirmed that “The Blue Elephant 3” begins filming next month, and spoke about the impact of AI on creativity:
“AI will speed up some people and slow down others — but it still needs an educated mind to guide it.”
Mourad also discussed the origins of his iconic novel The Blue Elephant, which he initially feared might be his last due to its complexity, before it became a cultural phenomenon through director Marwan Hamed ().

Looking ahead, Mourad said he is eagerly awaiting the release of his new film “El-Sett”, starring Mona Zaki (), calling it one of the most challenging works he and Marwan Hamed have ever created:
“There is no action, no fantasy — just a real woman’s story. Female-led cinema has vanished in Egypt, and we are trying to bring it back.”

“The Director of Photography Is a Co-Author of the Film’s Visual Language.”

In a special tribute session at the Cairo International Film Festival, legendary Egyptian cinematographer Mahmoud Abdel Samee’ shared rare stories from his remarkable career — including an unfinished film on Palestine he once developed with the late Rafat El-Mihi.

Abdel Samee’ spoke candidly about the creative partnership between director and cinematographer, describing it as a “relative relationship” shaped by trust, clarity, and shared vision. He recalled using over 90 lights to achieve a full 360° camera movement in “Le’l Hob Qessa Akheera”, showing how technical ambition and visual precision guided his work.

He also revealed innovative behind-the-scenes solutions, such as designing a custom moving wooden platform for “Al-Taweezah”, giving the supernatural scenes a unique visual texture that still stands out today.

For Abdel Samee’, cinematography is not ex*****on — it is authorship.
“The DP isn’t just following instructions. He is a partner in creating the film’s language,” he emphasized, urging young filmmakers to clarify their artistic vision and communicate it to their teams.

From shooting with his first film camera in 1961, to photographing more than 200 documentaries, to being the first cinematographer to enter the battlefield during the War of Attrition and the October War, Abdel Samee’ has shaped Egyptian visual culture for decades.

Today, as head of the Film Society and director of its annual festival, he continues to mentor new generations, carrying forward the discipline, curiosity, and artistry that defined his life’s work.

“Comedy Is a Social Art… Laughter Is the Result, Not the Goal.”

In an inspiring masterclass during CIFF46, legendary Egyptian director Mohamed Abdel Aziz reflected on the philosophy behind his iconic comedy films, emphasizing that true comedy carries meaning, message, and social depth.

He shared unforgettable memories with Adel Imam, revealing that the superstar initially refused to star in “El Baad Yezhab Lel Ma’zoun Marratein”, only for the film to become a massive success after release. Abdel Aziz insisted on casting Lobna (Lobna/Lobloba) in “Khally Balak Men Giranak”, a film that went on to run for an impressive 32 weeks despite opening in a small cinema.

For him, humor doesn’t come from forced jokes
“It’s the events themselves that make you laugh.”

Actress Lobna/Lobloba praised Abdel Aziz for teaching her how to perform comedy with elegance and without exaggeration, crediting him for shaping her understanding of timing and screen presence.

Abdel Aziz spoke about the difficulty of directing comedy, describing it as a delicate balance between emotion, thought, and human truth — a craft he polished through decades of work across cinema, theatre, and television. With over 20 TV works and dozens of beloved films, he highlighted that comedy often carries more seriousness than tragedy because it reflects society itself.

Receiving the Golden Pyramid for Lifetime Achievement, he expressed deep gratitude and celebrated his long creative partnership with Hussein Fahmy.

“Comedy is an honest art… a mirror of everyday life, not just humor.”
