BlackBerry: The Most Important Mobile Company of the Future?

If you are like many, when you saw this headline you likely were surprised BlackBerry was still around. As BlackBerry phones left the market, the company fell out of sight. However, behind the scenes it has been moving into industries like automotive. Also, it remains the leading vendor providing mobile security to our politicians, military personnel and major corporations.
As we move into an era when our smartphones become our key to everything, and when the machines around us are highly connected, mobile, and increasingly have our lives in their hands, the security of these things has become a critical weakness.
Looking at autonomous cars alone, if a hostile agency were able to gain control over a critical mass of them, the potential for loss of life on a national scale could make any other man-made or natural disaster look trivial by comparison

Sony's Aibo Resurrected From Robot Pet Cemetery

Sony on Wednesday revived its robot dog, Aibo, which it put down, so to speak, in 2006.

The autonomous entertainment robot brings fun and joy to the entire family, Sony claimed.

Among other things, it can bond emotionally with people and give them love and affection, the company said.

Aibo also lets them experience the joy of nurturing and raising a companion, according to Sony.

Aibo has ultra-impact 1- and 2-axis actuators that let it move smoothly and naturally along 22 axes.

The eyes have OLEDs to allow for diverse, nuanced expressions, Sony said. Aibo also shows "emotions" through tail and ear movements.

That audiophile in your life can be so difficult to shop for, especially if you're one of those low-maintenance listeners who's never really understood the appeal of, say, collecting fragile vinyl records. (In your defense, Spotify's library of tunes is extremely large and extremely free.)

Well, fret not: The Mashable Shop is currently holding a sale on the EarDials, a set of smart, transparent earplugs that make the perfect stocking stuffer for any music snob who still wants to be able to be able to hear after the encore wraps up. (Imagine that!)

I was all set to become an iPhone X owner, but the Sony Xperia XZ1 has broken my Apple addiction and made me an 'X' iPhone user.

Every time I upgrade to the latest iPhone after a two-year contract, I tell myself that this time things will be different and it won't smash.

But when my iPhone 6S was horrifically injured in a routine drop from no higher than 4ft, I was given the Sony Xperia XZ1's predecessor to try out, and I began to see things differently.

That was a year ago. And, ever since, I’ve carried two phones around with me.

Patrick J. Adams has shared what could be one of the last snaps of the original Suits cast altogether after it was reported both he and Meghan Markle are set to leave the show.

The Canadian actor, who has starred in legal drama from season one, uploaded a picture of the cast - including Gabriel Macht, Sarah Rafferty, Gina Torres and Rick Hoffman - sitting around table.
Just days earlier it was reported Patrick (who plays Mike Ross) and Prince Harry's girlfriend Meghan (who plays Rachel Zane) wouldn't be returning next season.

"Uh it's going to be sad when you leave," one upset fan wrote underneath the picture, while another simply shared, RIP Rachel and Mike."

The first 100 years of Olympic cycling yielded just 39 medals for Britain — seven gold, 18 silver and 14 bronze. The past 21 years, however, have seen British cyclists win 48, including 25 gold.

Over the past two decades, British cycling fans have witnessed, quite literally, our golden age in the sport.

The exploits of Sir Bradley Wiggins and Chris Froome have seen British road cycling elevated from its lowly position to the template for other nations. On the track, meanwhile, one man stands out as an icon of the sport.

Sir Chris Hoy has 25 World Championship medals spanning three decades and his six Olympic gold medals make him the joint most successful British Olympian ever. For many, the memory of London 2012 goes hand in hand with Team GB's success in the velodrome, and central to that is the image of Hoy gliding round the track.

The old Taylor can't come to the phone right now, but the new one was more than happy to pick up when Saturday Night Live came calling.

Over the weekend, Taylor Swift hit 30 Rock as a musical guest for the first time since 2009, bringing her reputation with her.
Swift began with a fierce performance of "... Ready for It," singing into a gold microphone with a jewel-encrusted snake wrapped around it.

Later in the show, Swift toned things down for a lovely acoustic version of "Call It What You Want."

Tyrese Gibson has apologised to his fans following a series of public meltdowns over the last few weeks.

The Fast and Furious actor sparked concern after sharing videos of himself crying, lashing out at co-star Dwayne 'The Rock Johnson' and complaining about his mounting legal bills due to his ongoing custody battle with his ex-wife.

Returning to social media over the weekend, the star issued an apology and blamed his erratic behaviour on a bad reaction to his medication.

Dinosaurs could have avoided extinction if the meteor had landed just about anywhere else
Controversial new research has highlighted just how unlucky the dinosaurs were.

Around 66 million years ago, a six-mile-wide meteorite blazed across the sky and slammed into the continental shelf of Mexico's Yucatan peninsular.

The impact shook the planet with the force of 10 billion nuclear bombs and threw enough rubble into the sky to partially blot out the sun. It resulted in the death of 75% of the world's biodiversity and has come do be known as the K-T extinction event.

Is this what Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s royal wedding day will be like?
As Prince Harry reportedly introduces Meghan to the Queen and royal insiders predict an imminent engagement, we imagine the next royal wedding.
Last month, when Prince Harry was reported to have taken Meghan Markle to meet the Queen over tea at Buckingham Palace, social media blew up in an are-they-aren’t-they-getting-engaged debate. And now the royal has fuelled engagement rumours by joking with a war veteran about bringing her to a Westminster Abbey event next year.

Royal insiders are now saying it’s not a question of if, but when. With this buzz of speculation, we couldn’t help but wonder how the next royal wedding might pan out.

Jibo robot review: Lifelike, adorable, unfinished.Like an attentive dog, Jibo watches me. Its cyclops eye blinks and the bulbous head follows my hand as I grab my cup of water. The movements — smooth head turns and animated body swivels — make Jibo seem alive, but it’s not.

Jibo is a home robot from Jibo, Inc. that wants to be a family home companion, but it's mostly a reminder of just how hard it is to build an effective personal robot.
I first met Jibo more than three years ago. The brainchild of MIT roboticist Cynthia Breazeal, Jibo was an amazing mix of early artificial intelligence and expertly crafted robot animation. It responded to touch and voice, and had an expressive touchscreen face.

Google's Waymo leapfrogs Uber to launch first ride-hailing service with no human driver behind the wheel
The service will be free at first, but Waymo expects at some point to start charging for rides.
Waymo, formerly known as Google's self-driving car project, is launching an Uber-like ride-hailing service with no human driver behind the wheel.

The company, which is owned by Google parent Alphabet, has been testing its fleet of self-driving Fiat Chrysler Pacifica minivans on public roads in Arizona, and plans to start carrying passengers in the next few months.

The first passengers will be those who are already part of the company's public trial in Phoenix, but Alphabet plans to roll out the service to the wider public at a later date.

To begin with, members of the public taking part in the trial will be accompanied in the back seat by a Waymo employee, but eventually they will travel alone - although they will be able to hit a button to stop the car.
