ATHENS MINI GUIDE (save for later!)

Here’s your short, sweet, actually-useful mini guide to Athens, packed with history, neighbourhood gems, and the kind of food you’ll dream about on the flight home.

THINGS TO SEE & DO

The Acropolis
Book a guided visit (link in my storefront). It makes a huge difference. Seeing the Acropolis of Athens with context brings the Parthenon to life. Go early to avoid peak crowds and heat.

Acropolis Museum
Do this right after. The Acropolis Museum beautifully connects the ruins to real stories. The top-floor Parthenon Gallery alone is worth it.

Monastiraki Square
Monastiraki Square is chaotic in the best way — flea markets, street views of the Acropolis, buzzy cafés. Great for soaking up that layered Athens energy.

National Gardens
Need a breather? The National Garden is a shady escape in the middle of the city — especially welcome in summer.

Walking Tour
Start your trip with a free walking tour . It’s tip-based and gives you historical context + local recommendations.

Wander the Neighbourhoods
• Plaka – postcard-pretty, neoclassical buildings, bougainvillea everywhere.
• Psiri – cool bars, creative vibe.
• Koukaki – relaxed, local feel near the Acropolis.
• Kolonaki – chic boutiques + café culture.

WHERE TO EAT
Someone told me there’s no such thing as a tourist strap. Sure some places might cost a bit more, but the food will be excellent everywhere. We didn’t have a single disappointing meal, so maybe there’s some truth to this!

Anefani – Modern Greek with creative twists, gorgeous setting.
Efcharis – Classic Greek taverna in Monastiraki. Think grilled meats, warm hospitality.
Nissos Seafood Tavern – Fresh seafood, laid-back and simple atmosphere

WHERE TO STAY
- Design-forward, central, walking distance to all major sights. Ideal base for exploring Athens on foot. Clean aesthetic, great breakfast, unbeatable location.

Athens works beautifully as a 2–3 day city break or as the cultural start to a wider Greece itinerary.

Is Athens worth visiting? Here’s the honest answer —

If you’re expecting a polished, museum-like city, Athens might surprise you. It’s gritty in places. A little chaotic. Loud. Buzzing.

But if you love culture layered over everyday life? It’s one of Europe’s most compelling city breaks.

Here’s what makes Athens worth it:

✨The history feels alive
Standing at the Acropolis isn’t just a photo moment. It’s perspective. Go early (right at opening) or 1–2 hours before closing for fewer crowds and softer light. The Parthenon hits differently at golden hour (which you can also see from one of Athens’ many plazas)

✨It’s more than ruins
Wander Anafiotika. Watch sunset from Philopappos Hill (free, and often quieter than the Acropolis viewpoint). Spend time in the buzzing neighbourhood cafés.

✨It’s compact
You can see the highlights in 2–3 days without rushing. Perfect long weekend in Europe.

✨It pairs well
Combine Athens with a Greek island — but don’t treat it as just a transit city. It deserves to be treated as a destination.

Who will love Athens?
• Culture-first travellers
• Food lovers
• Slow explorers
• Anyone who prefers substance over polish

So, is Athens worth visiting?
Yes — if you go in with the right expectations.

A little landscape love for the city of Athens today.

There’s something about historic sites that just have to be photographed landscape. I feel like most of us take photos for social media and this sometimes gets lost.

Most people know Athens for its history. Athens is less like a city and more like a timeline you can walk through. Ancient temples, sun-bleached hills, and neighborhoods that have watched thousands of years passed by, yet somehow it still feels alive, modern and full of energy. From the Acropolis standing guard above the city to quiet corners where everyday life unfolds, Athens shows how history is not just preserved, but it’s really part of the landscape.

Pics 1-4: the Acropolis of Athens (needs no further explanation!)
Pics 5-6: Panathenaic Stadium

Pic 8: the Temple of Olympian Zeus

Tell me you live in Europe without telling me you live in Europe 😂🫠

There are definitely ways to play the points game here too, but I most certainly can’t get business class tickets by just spending on grocery 😂 Not many things make me wish I was living the US, but the travel credit cards there are at the top of the (small) list!

What travel hack should I share next?

WHAT WE GOT WRONG IN PERU - AND WHAT WE ABSOLUTELY NAILED

Peru is one of those destinations that rewards thoughtful planning… and humbles you when you get it wrong. Here’s what we learned.

What we did right:

✔️ Planned our Peru itinerary around altitude
Instead of flying straight into Cusco, we started in Arequipa and gradually worked our way up. Fewer headaches, more energy, and a far more enjoyable experience overall. If you’re planning a Peru trip, altitude planning isn’t optional — it’s essential.

✔️ Explored more than just Machu Picchu
Yes, Machu Picchu is incredible — but Peru is so much more. The Sacred Valley sites, Arequipa’s colonial beauty, and Lake Titicaca added depth, variety, and breathing room to our itinerary. Skipping the “one highlight only” approach made the trip feel richer and less rushed.

✔️ Put food at the centre of the experience
Peru truly earns its reputation as the food capital of South America. From ceviche to Nikkei cuisine, we didn’t have a single bad meal. We researched restaurants, mixed casual spots with standout dining, and would return to Peru purely for the food.

Mistakes we made:

❌ Underestimated Lima’s weather
Those iconic Malecón de Miraflores views? We never saw them. Lima stayed grey the entire time. The food is unbeatable, but if you’re visiting Lima, go in knowing it’s a culinary destination first — scenery second.

❌ Not building in enough rest at altitude
Even with smart planning, altitude still slows you down. Maximizing our time there was intentional, but if time allowed I’d have loved to build in 2-3 more slow mornings. Especially in the Sacred Valley.

❌ Expecting every stop to wow visually
Not every place in Peru is dramatic or postcard-perfect — and that’s okay. Some destinations shine through culture, food, and atmosphere rather than visuals alone.

Have you been to Peru — or is it still on your list?

LIMA: A CITY OF CONTRASTS

Often called the food capital of South America, and honestly? That title is earned. Lima’s food scene is unreal. From ceviche to Nikkei cuisine, we didn’t have a single bad meal — and I’d happily return just for the food.

But if I’m being honest, Lima was my least favourite stop in Peru.

The city itself felt okay but didn’t fully stand out for us, and the weather stayed grey the entire time. Those iconic Malecón de Miraflores ocean views you see all over Instagram? We never got them..

If you’re planning a trip to Lima, this is the best way to spend a day:

✨Morning in Barranco for street art, cafés, and coastal views
✨Walk the Malecón in Miraflores (if the clouds cooperate)
✨Base your plans around food — long lunches, tasting menus, and late dinners
✨End the day with drinks overlooking the Pacific (again… weather permitting)

Lima may not have wowed me visually, but when it comes to Peruvian cuisine, it’s unbeatable, and that alone makes it worth visiting.

LIMA’S COOLEST NEIGHBORHOOD 🇵🇪

Barranco is Lima’s creative heartbeat, and its streets are the canvas.

Much of Barranco’s street art reflects Peru’s political history, Indigenous heritage, feminism, and social inequality. These aren’t just pretty murals — they’re visual storytelling.

Barranco has long been Lima’s bohemian district, home to writers, musicians, and artists. The street art feels native to the neighbourhood, not imposed for tourism.

What’s also really cool is that murals here don’t stay forever. Walls are constantly painted over, reworked, or reclaimed, which makes wandering Barranco feel fleeting and alive. What you see today might be gone next month.

Wandering these colourful streets is one of the best free things to do in Lima - and honestly, one of the most memorable. If you’re planning a trip to Peru, don’t skip Barranco!
