In the 2024 update, the Shield Master feat has undergone significant quality of life improvements, making it far more useful in combat.

One of the biggest changes is that the Shield Bash feature no longer requires a Bonus Action, allowing players to use their Bonus Action for other abilities, such as additional attacks or casting spells like Divine Smite.

This change greatly enhances the flexibility of characters with multiple attacks, especially if the Shield Bash successfully knocks a target prone, giving them Advantage on subsequent attacks.

Additionally, the feat now requires a Strength saving throw from the target (instead of a skill check), which makes it more reliable against creatures with high Strength scores, and it eliminates the need for Athletics checks, lowering the opportunity cost to use this ability.

However, the new version of Shield Master does require focusing on Strength for effectiveness, as there’s no longer a way to enhance the shove beyond increasing Strength. The feat’s second advantage, interposing your shield to protect others, is situational, but can be extremely powerful when used with the right defensive abilities.

Overall, the changes to Shield Master make it a much more appealing option for martial classes, particularly Fighters, Paladins, and Barbarians, as it allows them to better control the battlefield while maintaining their flexibility in combat.

In 2024, the Dwarf’s Stonecunning ability has been reworked and now grants them temporary Tremorsense. This change opens up a range of tactical and flavorful possibilities. Tremorsense allows a dwarf to detect vibrations within a specific radius, enabling them to perceive creatures and movements even through walls or barriers—essentially functioning like a form of echolocation. This ability can be creatively applied to detect hidden or invisible creatures, such as those using Stealth or magic to remain unseen. For example, a dwarf standing near a door can feel the vibrations of creatures on the other side, potentially preventing an ambush or eavesdropping. Additionally, Tremorsense bypasses obscured conditions like magical darkness, providing a significant advantage over enemies hiding in the shadows. The change also comes with other enhancements: Darkvision now extends to 120 feet, and the Hill Dwarf’s bonus to hit points is now available to all dwarves, eliminating the distinction between Hill and Mountain Dwarves. The updated Stonecunning removes weapon proficiencies from the 2014 rules, focusing more on the new sensory capabilities of the dwarf race. As a DM, I find this new feature perfect for adding depth to stealthy encounters or revealing hidden dangers with a creative twist, like saying, “You become aware of a creature hiding behind the curtains,” instead of simply describing a sound. Tremorsense is a versatile tool, both for PCs and NPCs, and brings a fresh dynamic to the game.

FOMO: Forgetting Our Mission Objectives... Again.
When you’re a casual player who only knows something’s happening when there’s a fight, or a DM who has crafted a plot so complex nobody understands it anymore, or thanks to everyone’s busy schedules, you have to wait five weeks for the next session. 😅
