In the 2024 update, the Shield Master feat has undergone significant quality of life improvements, making it far more useful in combat.
One of the biggest changes is that the Shield Bash feature no longer requires a Bonus Action, allowing players to use their Bonus Action for other abilities, such as additional attacks or casting spells like Divine Smite.
This change greatly enhances the flexibility of characters with multiple attacks, especially if the Shield Bash successfully knocks a target prone, giving them Advantage on subsequent attacks.
Additionally, the feat now requires a Strength saving throw from the target (instead of a skill check), which makes it more reliable against creatures with high Strength scores, and it eliminates the need for Athletics checks, lowering the opportunity cost to use this ability.
However, the new version of Shield Master does require focusing on Strength for effectiveness, as there’s no longer a way to enhance the shove beyond increasing Strength. The feat’s second advantage, interposing your shield to protect others, is situational, but can be extremely powerful when used with the right defensive abilities.
Overall, the changes to Shield Master make it a much more appealing option for martial classes, particularly Fighters, Paladins, and Barbarians, as it allows them to better control the battlefield while maintaining their flexibility in combat.
