The Leonardo Times is the Aerospace Engineering Journal published by VSV 'Leonardo da Vinci' from Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands.

The ‘Leonardo Times’ is issued by the Society for Aerospace Engineering students, the VSV ‘Leonardo da Vinci’ , Faculty of Aerospace Engineering, Delft University of Technology, The Netherlands. The US is seriously concerned about the Chinese Air Force capabilities. Recently, a mock up of the Chinese J-20 was spotted on a US Air Base. The mock up was most likely designed for the US to gain a better understanding of the aircraft and its capabilities, and assess whether it can be a threat to the current US dominance in the sky.

Attempt two for Airbus. The European manufacturer has allied itself with Lockheed Martin to sell its A330 MRTT to the US Air Force. This puts a lot of pressure on Boeing which won the previous contract in a controversial manner and considering the numerous delays it is now experiencing with its own tanker. Airbus has an edge as the aircraft is already flying in a number of air forces around the world. But it is likely that the final decision on who will produce the roughly hundred more air tankers needed will be political more than technological or financial.

An agreement between Lockheed Martin and Airbus may have reignited the Tanker Wars.

As SpaceX landed its latest booster perfectly, in the ocean, China prepared for a launch to the moon. The country’s space agency aims to send a lander and a rover to the far side of the moon for the first time. China as been continuously and steadily improving its space expertise. This launch, if a success, would mark an important milestone, and could foresee the presence of Chinese astronauts on our moon in a not too distant future. The ultimate goal being a base on the Moon.

It is always nice to launch dozens of satellites at once. But how do you track them and ensure you are tracking the right ones? This is an issue that SpaceX is having to deal through right now as it launched 64 satellites at once. This lead to a first delay of the launch last week. Ultimately, the company launched the rocket yesterday and so far there is no word on whether tracking issues were encountered by SpaceX or the Air Force.

As SpaceX prepares to launch a Falcon 9 carrying dozens of smallsats, some experts are worried it will be difficult to track the satellites once in orbit.

Trump's Space Force is in jeopardy. The Trump administration has acknowledge the reticence of Congress to have a fully independent new military branch called the Space Force. New plans recently drafted would see the newly created Space Force as part of the Air Force. Time will tell what happened with this pet project of the US president.

Pentagon leaders were dutifully double-timing toward a new military branch. Then they got new marching orders.

More details are starting to emerge around the crash of the Lion Air B737 which killed 189 people in October. It seems that the pilots were fighting with the anti-stall system when the plane crashed. It has also been revealed that the plane had suffered the same issue with its anti-stall system in the previous flight but the pilots had managed to land the plane regardless. Right now, it is too early to place the blame on anyone. There might have been issues with the pilot training procedures at Lion Air but Boeing could also be partially responsible. More information will be provided as the investigation continues.

Indonesian investigators described a battle between the pilots of Lion Air flight JT610 and an automated anti-stall system on the Boeing 737 Max 8.

While NASA and its Insight probe landed on Mars, SpaceX has been continuing work on its newly renamed Starship. The company has asked the FCC and FAA for permits to test its new spaceship, formerly known as the BFR. This is the same location where SpaceX had tested the Grasshopper for take off and landing operations in Texas. Ultimately, Starship should be the company's ride for tourists wanting to visit Mars.

SpaceX has filed an application with the FCC to cover testing at the company’s South Texas site of what may be the its next-generation launch vehicle.

Flybe is up for sale. The airline is not doing well and is looking for a new owner. This is due to weaker demand but also to a weak pound and rising fuel costs. Virgin Atlantic is one of the airlines that is interested in the running to acquire the small carrier.

Flybe confirms reports that it is in talks with Virgin, after the regional airline put itself up for sale.

Mark the date! The first Dragon Space X Crew capsules will take off on January 7th 2019. This will mark the first test for this new capsule and a milestone in NASA's efforts to launch US astronauts into space once again. The Boeing CST-100 should be having a similar test flight in March 2019.

Cathay Pacific is feeling the squeeze with new ultra long range aircraft. The airline's hub is optimally positioned for hub operations from and to Australia. However, with the new A350-900 ULR, the B787 and the upcoming B777X, the airline is worried it will lost its advantage. For example, Qantas is already flying direct flights from Perth to London where before it had to make a stop over in Dubai, Singapore or even Hong Kong. Qantas is now looking to introduce a service from Sydney to London and New York as well. The worst part is, Qantas can charge a premium on these shorter direct flights which means Cathay is both losing passenger and revenue at the same time. One silver lining:, ultra long haul operations are the first to suffer in a downturn, Singapore Airlines knows that all too well. But apart such scenario, Cathay still has to react to this new threat.

Elon Musk's erratic behaviour has lead to issues for Tesla in the past. It is now SpaceX that has to face the consequences. NASA has announced it was launching an audit of the company's culture and work environment following a recent episode where Musk was smoking what looked like w**d during a podcast interview. This comes as NASA has contracted both SpaceX and Boeing to launch its astronauts into space in the future.
