From 17 October 2025 to 4 January 2026, Kantjil en de Tijger will tour theaters across the Netherlands. Directed by Paul Knieriem, this family-friendly performance (suitable for ages 8+) brings an epic, moving, and humorous story to the big stage by blending music, theater, and puppetry. The show is a collaboration between , , and , and will premiere on Sunday, 19 October at Internationaal Theater Amsterdam.
The story centers on Indra, whose ill grandmother, Billy, has one last wish that uncovers long-hidden family secrets. With the help of Kantjil, a magical Javanese deer, Indra journeys through five generations of women to discover what her Javanese roots mean for her today. Kantjil en de Tijger asks: Can you be too young to bear family history, or too old to face it? With humor, music, and imagination, it portrays how memories bring families back together.
The production is not only a family story but also an invitation to talk about the colonial past of the former Dutch East Indies, both at home and in schools. By giving space to untold stories, Kantjil en de Tijger shows how history continues to live on in the present, as part of our lives today.
This major family production unites the full Oorkaan Ensemble, Studio Figur, and an outstanding multigenerational cast. Many of the artists and writers involved have roots in Indonesia themselves, providing a deep and personal connection to the themes they explore.
Kantjil en de Tijger will be performed from 17 October 2025 to 4 January 2026 in Alkmaar, Almere, Amersfoort, Amstelveen, Amsterdam, Apeldoorn, Breda, Delft, The Hague, Dordrecht, Groningen, Haarlem, Kerkrade, Leeuwarden, Leiden, Rotterdam, Tilburg, Utrecht, and Zaandam.
