Before Anime, there was Kawase Hasui.

Known as the master of snow, rain, and moonlight, Hasui created over 600 woodblock prints that captured a quieter side of Japan, empty streets, glowing lanterns, misty temples, and peaceful countryside scenes. ๐ŸŒ™

If his work feels familiar, youโ€™re not imagining it. The atmospheric landscapes that make Studio Ghibli films so magical share many of the same qualities: a sense of nostalgia, careful attention to light, and the feeling that nature is alive.

Look at Hasuiโ€™s famous snow scenes, rainy streets, or moonlit temples, then compare them to the backgrounds of Spirited Away or Princess Mononoke. More than 70 years later, his vision of Japan still feels timeless.

A reminder that some of animeโ€™s most beautiful worlds may have roots in the woodblock prints of the early 20th century.

In 1998, director Shinichiro Watanabe created Cowboy Bebop, an anime that felt less like a traditional television show and more like a kinetic, cinematic mood.

It was a vibe defined by drifting astronauts, lingering pasts, and the smoky wail of a saxophone.

Set against the backdrop of a disaster-ravaged Earth and a colonized solar system in 2071, Cowboy Bebop operates on a simple premise: bounty hunters, known as "cowboys," chasing criminals for a meal ticket.

But the world around it is anything but simple. Watanabe pulled from film noir, spaghetti westerns, Bruce Lee-style martial arts, jazz, blues, and sci-fi.

This genre-bending extended to the episode structure. Largely episodic, Watanabe titled each episode a "session" rather than an episode, leaning into the show's musical DNA. This allowed the series to function as a collection of standalone short films, ranging from horror and comedy to profound tragedy, while slowly weaving an overarching narrative about the inescapability of the past.

At the heart of the Bebop is a found family defined by isolation.

Spike Spiegel is a laid-back ex-syndicate hitman haunted by a dead lover and a surviving rival. Jet Black is a disillusioned former cop. Faye Valentine is a gambler suffocating under debt and amnesia. Ed is a feral, eccentric hacker, and Ein is a genetically enhanced Welsh corgi.

They are lonely people sharing a ship, held together by the fact that the void of space is less cold when you aren't alone.

Cowboy Bebop also arrived at the right moment to become a gateway anime for audiences around the world.

Its Western influences and mature, existential themes made it accessible to people who did not usually watch animation.

When it aired on Cartoon Network's Adult Swim in 2001, it found a massive audience in the West, helped by a legendary English dub led by Steve Blum's iconic portrayal of Spike, which is still debated as superior to the original Japanese track.

Cowboy Bebop endures because it understood a fundamental truth: style and substance are not mutually exclusive.

See you, space cowboy.

Masayoshi Takanaka takes us to a place called Phantom Island in Japan, Okinawa.

Surrounded by nothing but the crystal blue water, clearer than glass itselt, Takanaka delivers an electric-acoustic performance of some of his best works.

Takanaka offers us not only a listening experience, but a visual one too.

The ambience of the sea breeze and waves gently crashing on shore resemble the same beauty of his gentle, yet powerful strumming of each chord.

The gorgeous scenery, with nothing but miles ot dlamona like water, and the ethereal cloudy, yet piercing blue skies, you almost couldn't imagine a better place for such breathtaking music.

Rain in Studio Ghibli

In several Studio Ghibli scenes, rain appears when the pace slows: characters walking leisurely, a bus stop, a silent house. The water falls steadily, and time stretches out.

The scene lingers, and we, as viewers, calmly enter that moment, watching everything settle without any need for haste.

Hayao Miyazaki constructs these spaces with great care. The rain dictates what happens through sound, light, and movement, giving meaning to the scene.

We, as viewers, understand the moment through what we see and hear, while the character remains, processes, and continues from a different perspective.

In Kamiyama, Tokushima, a torii gate made entirely of speakers turns tradition into sound.

Visitors can connect their phone and play music or audio directly through the gate, transforming a sacred architectural form into a living sound installation.
