What do you make for lunch that makes you feel 100% Dutch?

While the rest of the world is having hot meals or massive salads for lunch that take 30 minutes to make, the traditional Dutch lunch is famously... efficient. Just grab a slice of brown bread, slap a piece of cheese on it, maybe add a glass of buttermilk (karnemelk), and you are good to go! Of course, true Dutch efficiency allows for a few legendary and classic variations:

๐Ÿซ Swapping the cheese for a thick layer of hagelslag (chocolate sprinkles).

๐Ÿฅช Grilling it into a tosti if you have an extra 5 minutes.

๐Ÿฅ– Upgrading to a broodje kroke because its Friday?

How accurate is this for your lunchtime routine? Do you have a secret ingredient or a weird combo? Drop your everyday lunchtime routine in the comments ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿฝ

Government U-Turn! ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ The monthly sirens are staying!

Just a few weeks ago, Justice Minister David van Weel announced that our familiar air raid sirens (luchtalarm) would be permanently shut down in 2028 because the government didn't have the money to replace them. But after a lot of pushback from parliament and local safety regions, they've completely changed their minds.

In a new letter to parliament, it was announced that the Netherlands is getting a brand-new, modernized siren network. The Ministry of Defense is stepping in to co-fund the upgrade, which will cost about โ‚ฌ100 million upfront.

Why the sudden change and the military involvement? The current network (the WAS) is outdated. Right now, to trigger the alarms, someone has to manually push a button in each regional safety office, which wastes precious time. The new system will feature a single national button linked directly to a military detection system.

While the mobile NL-Alert system is great and reaches roughly 92% of the population, Van Weel admitted that relying entirely on mobile phones is simply too risky if the country ever faces a serious military or hybrid threat.

So, you can still expect that routine 1 minute and 26 seconds of panic on the first Monday of every month at exactly 12:00 PM! (Just remember: if you hear it and it's not a Monday at noon, go inside and check your phone!)

Wait, our grocery bills are going up again? ๐Ÿ›’๐Ÿ’ธ

The checkout shock is real. The Dutch supermarket association (CBL) and the food industry federation (FNLI) have just issued a huge warning that daily groceries could jump by another 10% next year. ๐Ÿ˜ฑWhy is this happening? Itโ€™s a messy combination of factors hitting all at once:

๐ŸŒ Global Supply Shocks: Energy, transport, packaging, and raw material costs are climbing rapidly across the supply chain, heavily driven by the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

๐Ÿ“‰ Rising Inflation: General inflation in the Netherlands just hit 3.5% in May 2026, pushed upward by spiking energy prices.

๐Ÿšš Government Policy Stacking: New domestic regulations are piling on. This includes a proposed sugar tax, increased energy levies, and the new truck toll (vrachtwagenheffing) launching on July 1, 2026.

โณ The Retail Delay: Because supermarkets sit at the end of the supply chain, it takes 4 to 12 months for these accumulated backend costs to fully hit the shelves. What this means for you: Shoppers are already drastically changing how they buy groceries. Many are shifting to price-conscious shopping, switching to budget brands or even crossing the borders to Germany and Belgium to beat the prices.

The Netherlands is officially hosting Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako of Japan for a state visit from Wednesday, June 17, to Friday, June 19 just three days after Oranje will take on Japan.

The timing of this visit feels like a high-stakes diplomacy event when King Willem-Alexander and Queen Mรกxima will officially welcome the Japanese Imperial couple with a massive ceremony on Dam Square in Amsterdam. That evening, there will be a grand state banquet at the Royal Palace.

We are all for the historic 426 years of bilateral relations between our countries, but we have to wonder what the dinner conversation is going to be like if Oranje takes home the win on Sunday!

Who do you think is going to have the bragging rights at the Royal Palace next week? Let us know your match predictions below! ๐Ÿ‘‡

The Netherlands just finished the final warm up match with a messy 2-1 win over Uzbekistan. It took two penalty kicks from Cody Gakpo to get the job done and a red card for Guus Til definitely didn't help the nerves. It wasn't the best football, but a win is a win!

Now, the real stress begins. The team kicks off their 2026 World Cup run in Group F against Japan this Sunday on the 14th at Dallas Stadium. The blood pressure of the Netherlands is rising. How are we feeling about our chances against Japan? Are we going all the way or do we need a miracle to advance alongside Sweden and Tunisia? Even my TV is predicting a 2-1 win for Oranje! ๐Ÿ”ฎ Whatโ€™s your score prediction? Discuss below! ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿฝ

Is the Dutch government making a huge mistake by silencing the country's most iconic and terrifying alarm? ๐Ÿšจ๐Ÿ“ฑ๐Ÿ‡ณ๐Ÿ‡ฑ

The Dutch government has confirmed that the entire Luchtalarm network is going to be permanently shut down by January 1, 2028. The reason is that they couldn't secure the budget to maintain or replace the aging system. Instead, the 4,200 physical sirens are being completely replaced by NL-Alert, digital emergency notifications sent directly to your mobile phone.

Here is the problem that has the entire country arguing: according to the government's own numbers, about 8% of the population, around 1.2 million people, doesn't reliably receive these phone alerts. Whether itโ€™s elderly folks without smartphones, people with incorrect settings, or residents living near the border whose phones jump to German or Belgian networks, a huge chunk of the country might completely miss the warning. Safety experts and local officials are heavily protesting the move, arguing that a physical backup is absolutely necessary in case of power outages or network failures.

Where do you stand? Is moving purely to phone alerts a necessary modern upgrade, or is shutting down the physical sirens to save money a dangerous mistake? Letโ€™s debate in the comments! ๐Ÿ‘‡

Everyone knows the tragic Van Gogh story, but honestly, the only reason we even know his name today is because of his sister-in-law's absolute masterclass in literary curation.

When Vincent died in 1890, he was practically unknown to the general public and only sold a few paintings. It was Johanna van Gogh-Bonger who orchestrated his rise to fame. She recognized something critical: his paintings couldn't just stand on their own; they needed the deeply emotional context of his personal letters to convince a skeptical art establishment.

The wildest part? When her husband Theo died just months after Vincent, Jo was urged by her own family to get rid of the collection. Art dealers dismissed the paintings as "worthless junk" and told her she was wasting her time.

Instead, she spent years meticulously compiling, editing, and translating his massive collection of correspondence. By publishing his private thoughts alongside his art, she challenged the rigid gender constructs of the 19th-century art world, establishing herself as a formidable agent in a male-dominated field. She literally forced the art establishment to understand his genius by proving that the narrative surrounding the art is just as vital as the canvas itself.

If Johanna hadn't shared his letters, do you think Van Gogh would still be famous today? Iโ€™d love to hear your thoughts in the comments! ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿฝ

While the Netherlands is globally renowned for its intricate network of historical canals, few realize the Dutch engineered a completely exhilarating sport specifically to cross them. It is called Fierljeppen (translating literally to "far-leaping"), and it is a breathtaking display of athleticism and physics.

The mechanics of the sport are both fascinating, yet intense:

Competitors run a full-speed sprint toward a wide body of water. Then, they propel themselves onto a massive, 30-foot wooden pole situated directly in the water. As the pole tips forward under their weight, athletes must frantically ascend to the absolute apex. The momentum launches them through the air, culminating in a dramatic landing on an elevated sandbed on the opposite bank.

It is a phenomenal testament to human agility and a uniquely thrilling cultural tradition.

Would attempting this time extreme sport or would you immediate splash into the canal? Let us know below ๐Ÿ’ฆ๐Ÿ‘‡

June kicks off a massive culinary event in the Netherlands: the arrival of the Hollandse Nieuwe (New Dutch Herring). The nationwide sale of the 2026 catch officially starts on June 17th! For those who don't know, Hollandse Nieuwe is a traditional Dutch street food delicacy, eaten raw and whole. However, to be legally called Hollandse Nieuwe, there are strict requirements it must meet:

-It must be caught between mid-May and June when the fish has reached a minimum of 16% fat content.
-It should be gutted using a traditional 14th-century technique called haringkaken. The gills are removed, but the pancreas is left inside so its natural enzymes can perfectly cure and flavor the fish in a light brine.

When you order one at a street stall, you have three choices on how you can eat it:
The Classic: Grab it by the tail, dip it in raw diced onions, tilt your head all the way back, and lower the entire thing into your mouth!
The Sandwich: Ordered as a broodje haring, served inside a soft, white bun.
The Snack: Chopped into bite-sized pieces and eaten with a toothpick alongside onions and sweet pickles.

If you had to choose, are you going for the classic tail-drop, the sandwich, the snack, or skipping it entirely? Let us know below ๐Ÿ‘‡๐Ÿฝ
