Baguio’s Bid for the Largest Crochet Mandala World Record Accepted by Guinness
Baguio City’s creative community has taken a bold step onto the global stage. Adelaida Guia announced with overflowing gratitude on social media that their application to Guinness World Records has been officially accepted under the title “Largest Crochet Mandala.”
Adelaida Guia, who had been crocheting giant mandalas for the past three years and displaying them at Session Road, decided to go for a record last June. For one month, she crocheted with a 5 mm hook at Rose Garden in Burnham Park, completing 147 rounds to create a six-meter diameter mandala. The finished piece weighed 32 kilograms.
In an email received from Guinness World Records, Guia was informed that their project has met the criteria to proceed to the next phase. This means their attempt to create the world’s largest crochet mandala is now recognized as a valid record attempt. However, the team must still complete all requirements and guidelines set by Guinness to secure the title.
Guia expressed heartfelt thanks to Team G, including Marge DC Gomez, Francis Xavier Art Tibaldo, Layla Corro, Jonard Don Bactad Jardenil, Ferdielita Mendoza, Florentino Leslie Dulfo, Avereen D. Tibalao, and UPB SILBI, who have been instrumental in the project. “To God be the Glory,” she wrote, highlighting that while the application is accepted, the record is not yet guaranteed.
The group also envisions this endeavor as their contribution to Baguio’s status as a UNESCO Creative City, showcasing the city’s rich tradition of crafts and folk art on an international platform.
With the application now in motion, the team is preparing to meet Guinness’ stringent requirements. If successful, this project will not only set a world record but also celebrate Baguio’s creative spirit. - MMCF with reports from FC
