Speedy J

Speedy J Jochem Paap | Speedy J For all these achievements, the here and now of Paap’s life in music is just as interesting.

Jochem Paap’s first record as Speedy J landed on Plus 8 back in 1990, and yet he still engages with electronic music with the curiosity and productivity you’d expect of someone new to the game. His long and winding career has plenty of storied touchstones – seminal electronica LPs on Warp Records’ Artificial Intelligence series and Planet Mu, ambient epics on FAX +49-69/450464 Records, and a relen

tless wave of razor-sharp club 12”s across most of the iconic techno labels you’d care to think of. Via his Electric Deluxe label he champions some of the most daring techno variations in current circulation – artists such as AnD, Clouds and JK Flesh have trusted Paap with their most ambitious album projects. In the live arena, Paap has long been a champion of hybridization – a philosophy embedded in the DNA of techno as progressive, experimental music. By embracing the open-ended possibilities of music technology, the lines between live performance and DJing have eroded for Paap as he glides between standalone tracks and hardware improvisation. This approach also defines his on-stage collaborations – the Collabs project with Chris Liebing, Zeitgeber with Lucy and Multiples with Surgeon. In all situations Paap and his kindred spirits employ their keen instinct for experimental techno and all-encompassing technical knowledge to deliver visceral experiences. His Electric Deluxe Presents events also serve as an extension to his own artistic vision and that of his label roster, gathering together high profile line-ups everywhere from Sonar to Berghain, Detroit to NYC, and of course all over the Netherlands. Meanwhile, STOOR is a bold new venture that encompasses a Rotterdam-based studio and label, where Paap opens the doors to established artists and newcomers alike to immerse themselves in a high-spec environment for all manner of creative outcomes. Among the results from the sessions that take place are collaborative releases cut onto limited run vinyl on an in-house lathe. It’s a novel approach to creating and releasing music that celebrates the immediate moment – a present that Paap has consistently engaged with to take himself constantly forwards into intriguing new worlds of sound.

New release alert!

I have added 8 albums and EP’s for Bandcamp Friday.

To celebrate the new arrivals I will give 50% off on the entire catalogue. Use discount code "friday" at checkout!

Slag Boom Van Loon was a collaboration with Mike Paradinas, the self titled album was originally released in 1998 on Mikes label Planet Mu. The album got remixed by an Allstar line-up of Electronica producers such as Boards of Canada, Pole, Four Tet, Coil and many more. It was released titled So Soon three years later in 2001.

General Audio is a collaboration between Albert van Abbe and myself. This album was the result of a visit to Willem Twee Studios where we used their famous measuring equipment setup to record the album.

Also included are 2 Zeitgeber releases, a project with Lucy previously released on his label Stoboscopic Artefacts and 3 solo releases that came out between 2014 and 2016 on EDLX.

Some new stuff in the pipeline, follow me on Bancamp for the scoops!

Enjoy the weekend!

Two brand new Collabs 3000 tracks from Speedy J and I are out via NovaMute today.

After playing gigs together again, getting back in the studio together felt really, really good. The first two of the new tracks have already seen some great support, so thank you - and we can’t wait for you to check these new ones now.

Don’t forget there’s a limited, 500 copy run of the full four tracks available on vinyl AND that our remastered ‘Metalism’ LP lands next week.

Much love for the support, Chris & Speedy J

On the first day of spring, STOOR Live returns to Paradiso for another fully improvised hardware jam. Once again I will be accompanied by a remarkable selection of artists who continue to push the boundaries of sonic and visual exploration!

"After previous appearances as Out of Place Artefacts alongside Rødhåd in Paradiso and a celebrated STOOR performance at Kappa FuturFestival in Torino last summer VRIL returns for a third session on the STOOR Live stage. This time, he will be joined by Wata Igarashi, the esteemed Japanese composer and sound designer with whom he recently launched another collaborative live project called Phantom Circuits. Alongside them will be Erika, who’s been at the forefront of Detroit techno since the late '90s, known both as half of Ectomorph and as a solo artist whose deep mastery of analog synthesis continues to inspire. Completing the quintet are Function, founding member of the legendary Sandwell District collective, and of course Speedy J himself. These longtime collaborators were among the very first producers to work together in the STOOR lab many years ago, before the project was ever introduced to the world. Their reunion on stage marks a full-circle moment for STOOR."
