Al Archive

Al Archive ‘Al-Archive’ is a workshop series inviting visual makers to visualize key moments in history using subjective tools and methods.

‘Al-Archive’ is a workshop series inviting visual makers (be they designers, visual artists, photographers, animators, etc..) to visualize key moments in our recent history through comparing sources and contexts. The multiple outcomes and perspectives are meant to be collected and mediated as a ‘subjective archive’ targeting communication and media platforms. Moreover, the workshop encourages cros

s-disciplinary collaborations with journalists, writers, historians and theorists from different disciplines. The workshop intends at maximizing criticality in design at times when initiatives around the world are lobbying for a total decolonization of design education in order to ignite a change in power and perspective. Knowledge, a product of artistic and design research, should thus consider a decentralized starting point, stirring away from the role of the ‘center’. If design is seeking a serious alliance with criticality and a wider reach to communal realms, the production of knowledge should use multiple sources.

- How do we - visual makers - contribute to the production of knowledge?
- How do we re-design sources of information?
- How do we trace common connections, influences and milestones in our sociopolitical history?
- How do we visualize and represent news from different perspectives through intentionally subjective lenses?

THE FALL OF THE BERLIN WALL, 1989.
Genre: Political P***o
2’20’’ video-loop.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The 80s have witnessed the build up of the political and activist momentum leading to the fall of the Berlin wall. protestors were flooding the streets, claiming their city back and rebelling against the divide. That era represents an accumulation of erotica, punk and repressed shame leading to a climax.
Political shame has lead to a historical revelation, however, societies became passive with the 90s and the rise of consumerism, the wall was rebuilt and is now ready for another earth-shattering or**sm.

Gorilla is a visual column that comments on current affairs through words and images. De Designpolitieie states: 'In our capacity as designers, we find it important to become involved in social debate. That brings with it a certain responsibility and opportunity we eagerly take to be able to share reports on social topics with the rest of the world'.
What do you think of such initiatives and how to transform such efforts into an impactful 'voice'?

Alterative facts: Lebanon's history via pop culture. Since Lebanon still lacks a unified history book for the period that covers the war, due to the absence of a winner and therefore the prevalence of a single version of the events, and as time goes by - instead of losing all traces of the past - why not replace the divisive "politics" by the colletive memory which emanates from pop culture? This is a project by Tarek Chemaly to (re)write the history of Lebanon in a perspective everyone agrees upon.

As a result, 'The subjective Atlas of Palestine' won awards and gained international recognition. What do you think of de Vet's approach? Could documentation succeed without taking political sides?
