Why housing needs to catch up with an ageing population

When it comes to the global affordable housing crisis, it’s not just a matter of building more – it’s about building better. As populations grow older, how can we develop living environments that enable people to age with dignity and purpose?

How sensor-driven data is reprogramming design

As our buildings become more networked and our bodies more measurable, a new kind of interior is emerging, shaped by dynamic feedback. The search is on for tools that can diagnose and respond, rather than decorate or divide. In offices, schools, clinics and installations, spaces are learning to respond: to air quality, sound, light, movement and emotion.

Studio Ossidiana conceived the soft palace as a ‘gigantic garment’ inviting visitors to explore and relax.

The installation is part of Centre Pompidou’s ‘Constellation’, where the programming for the art centre can continue while the building is closed for renovation. Pink textile is artfully curved at a slope steeper than a half-pipe and gentler than a paper backdrop, supported by metal frames.

Across South America, low-tech projects are reimagining climate futures through local materials, passive systems and community-driven impact.

In place of resource-intensive interventions and site-disrupting techniques, architects are looking to straightforward, regenerative materials, Indigenous knowledge and non-mechanical methods to build structures that are not only attuned to climate change but deeply rooted in place and precedent.

For Hermès SS26, Villa Eugénie turned architecture into illusion, distorting symmetry, dissolving landmarks and refracting the summer cityscape into a live kaleidoscope.

The scenography consisted of four identical 2.8-m-high mirrored structures: three hung from the ceiling, and one stood directly on the floor in the vast hall’s central bay.

Explore some of the openings that caught FRAME's attention this week.

A Los Angeles boutique asserts that alternative consumerism is the right kind of consumerism, while making use of what we have – not tearing down and starting from scratch – is the order of the day in a Milan office block.

Colour and material function as both partitions and uniting elements at this real estate office

At first glance, this BresicWhitney office doesn’t give any hints of adaptive reuse – but it’s housed in a building over 100 years old. Very little of the original structure is apparent in the office interior, the resulting space, designed by THOSE ARCHITECTS, looking almost completely contemporary.

Somerset based studio, Somer, is creating modular, demountable kitchen systems that can move, evolve and retain their value for decades.

Often, the kitchen industry thrives on planned obsolescence, designing beautiful spaces that look dated within a decade – and fall apart soon after. But longevity isn't just about lasting; it's about remaining relevant, adaptable and useful as life changes around us. William Floyd-Maclean understands this distinction, and it's why he took a radically different approach to kitchen design when he founded Somer in 2023.
