Jellyfish watercolour by Alex Varani from Italy

🏆 Runner-up in the category Underwater – NPOTY 2025

While diving off Misool Island, Indonesia, I encountered an incredible jellyfish bloom - thousands of jellyfish drifting together just meters from the reef wall. These rare gatherings occur under specific environmental conditions and can create breathtaking underwater scenes.

Carefully approaching the swarm, I captured one of its densest sections, creating an image that resembles a delicate underwater watercolor painting.

Cono de Arita by Ignacio Palacios from the Australia

🏆 Runner-up in the category Landscapes – NPOTY 2025

Rising from the vast Arizaro Salt Flat in Argentina, the Cono de Arita is a surreal rock-and-salt formation that looks like a perfect volcano. While leading a photography workshop in La Puna, I witnessed a rare display of anticrepuscular rays forming at sunset behind the cone.

With only seconds to react, I launched my drone and captured the rays perfectly aligned with the summit. The result was a single, natural image of a truly unforgettable moment in one of the most remarkable landscapes on Earth.

In The Flow of Time by Balázs Ravasz from Hungary

🏆 Runner-up in the category Plants and Fungi – NPOTY 2025

One summer evening, I was photographing water knotweed (Polygonum amphibium) at Lake Külső in Tihany, Hungary, when I noticed that the pollen on the water’s surface was drifting with the increasing wind. I captured this delicate scene using a long shutter speed.

Blue Army by Imre Potyó from Hungary

🏆 Runner-up in the category Other Animals – NPOTY 2025

After decades of absence caused by water pollution, the endangered Danube mayfly returned to the River Danube, a hopeful sign of improving water quality. In the summer of 2024, millions of mayflies emerged in one of the most spectacular seasons in recent memory.

Drawn by the bright city lights of Szentendre, Hungary, enormous swarms gathered along the riverfront, creating a breathtaking but troubling spectacle. Unable to escape the artificial lights, countless insects perished, highlighting the fragile balance between nature and urban life.

The Hidden Grail of Sumatra Island by the Pond by Vladimir Cech Jr. from the Czech Republic

🏆 Runner-up in the category Mammals – NPOTY 2025

For more than four years, I worked toward one goal: capturing a high-resolution image of the critically endangered Sumatran tiger deep in the rainforest of Sumatra. Using homemade camera traps placed near Gunung Leuser National Park, I faced endless challenges from harsh conditions, failing equipment, and the sheer rarity of the tiger itself.

After hundreds of days of waiting, preparation, and persistence, everything finally came together for a single unforgettable moment - the gaze of one of the planet’s rarest big cats staring directly into my lens.

King Penguins by the Pond by Renato Granieri from United Kingdom

🏆 Runner-up in the category Birds – NPOTY 2025

Working as a photography guide on expedition ships has taken me to some of the world’s most remote places, including South Georgia - home to thousands of king penguins that continue to fascinate me with every visit.

While photographing molting penguins gathered around a vibrant pink freshwater pond, I recognized a unique pattern and waited nearly two years for the perfect weather conditions to capture this aerial scene in warm afternoon light.

Flowerscapes by Theo Bosboom from the Netherlands

🏆 Winner in the category Fred Hazelhoff Portfolio Award – NPOTY 2025

What would the world look like through the eyes of an insect moving through a field of flowers? With the help of a rotating wide-angle macro lens, Theo Bosboom explored flowers from completely new perspectives, revealing their beauty, fragility, and the hidden worlds they create.

While photographing across the Netherlands, Bosboom was also confronted by the alarming decline of insects and wildflowers caused by urbanization and intensive agriculture - a growing threat to biodiversity that deserves far more attention.

Panning Bobcat by Leo Dale from the USA

🏆 Winner in the category Youth – NPOTY 2025

After spending countless hours photographing bobcats along the California coast, I finally captured one of the images I had always dreamed of: a sharp panning shot of a bobcat carrying prey.

Because bobcats rarely move quickly or cross open areas with prey, everything had to align perfectly - the movement, direction, timing, and tracking. On this cloudy evening, it all came together in a single unforgettable moment.

Bike Tides by Sam Mannaerts from the Belgium

🏆 Winner in the category Nature of "De Lage Landen" – NPOTY 2025

During one of the only snow days in Belgium last winter, I flew my drone above a river inlet near my home to capture the striking patterns created by snow and low tide. In the middle of the mud, I spotted an abandoned bicycle covered in fresh snow.

The scene combined two elements the Lowlands are known for - water and mud - but also highlighted a less beautiful reality: the growing problem of illegal dumping in nature.

Shared Wonder by Mary Schrader from the USA

🏆 Winner in the category Animal Portraits – NPOTY 2025

Deep in Uganda’s Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, I watched a young mountain gorilla resting beside a silverback when a colorful butterfly suddenly appeared. Curious and completely captivated, the gorilla followed its delicate movements through the forest light.

I waited patiently until butterfly and gorilla aligned in a single frame - a fleeting moment where strength and fragility, curiosity and wonder, came together in perfect harmony.
