Sweden has become so efficient at recycling and waste management that it’s facing an unexpected problem: not enough garbage. With 99% of household waste recycled or recovered, the country has turned to importing waste from other nations, including the UK, Norway, and Italy to fuel its waste-to-energy (WtE) plants.

Sweden incinerates non-recyclable waste to produce electricity and district heating, powering homes and businesses.

This process accounts for roughly 10% of Sweden’s energy consumption, making it a key part of their circular economy.

Advanced sorting and recycling tech means less waste is generated domestically hence the need to import.

Sweden’s WtE model reduces landfill use and lowers greenhouse gas emissions compared to fossil fuels.

It’s a blueprint for how sustainability can scale: turning a global problem into a local resource.

Halima Cissé, a young mother from Mali, gave birth to nonuplets, five girls and four boys on May 4, 2021, in Casablanca, Morocco. The babies were born prematurely at 30 weeks, each weighing between 500g and 1kg, and were immediately placed in neonatal care.

The birth earned Halima a Guinness World Record for the most children delivered at a single birth to survive. But survival was just the beginning.

The babies required months of intensive care before returning to Mali.

Raising nine toddlers simultaneously involves enormous financial, emotional, and logistical strain.

Halima needed surgery after the birth, and the family relies heavily on support from relatives and the Malian government.
As of their fourth birthday in 2025, the children Kadidia, Fatouma, Hawa, Adama, Oumou, Mohammed VI, Oumar, Elhadji, and Bah are reportedly thriving, but their journey remains one of resilience and ongoing care.

In 2007, native Alaskan whalers made a jaw-dropping discovery: a bowhead whale they had hunted carried embedded in its neck a Victorian-era harpoon tip, dating back to the 1880s. This wasn’t just any harpoon, it was a bomb lance, a deadly weapon used in Arctic whaling that detonated after impact. Yet somehow, this whale had survived the attack and lived for over 130 years, gliding through frigid waters with a piece of history lodged in its blubber.

Bowhead whales are believed to live up to 200 years, making them the longest-living mammals on Earth. Their slow metabolism, robust immune system, and ability to repair cellular damage contribute to their longevity.

Environment: Living in the Arctic means fewer predators and diseases, allowing for a slower aging process.

The harpoon fragment was later identified as originating from New Bedford, Massachusetts, once the world’s whaling capital. It’s now displayed at the Inupiat Heritage Center in Barrow, Alaska, a haunting reminder of the whale’s miraculous endurance.

Ireland’s offering up to $92,000 USD (€84,000) to people willing to buy and renovate derelict homes on some of its most remote and breath-taking Atlantic islands. It’s part of a bold initiative called “Our Living Islands”, designed to revive dwindling island communities and preserve their cultural heritage.

Up to €84,000 (~$92,000) for renovating derelict properties

Up to €60,000 (~$67,000) for vacant but not derelict homes

24-year-old is Alyssa Carson's story is nothing short of extraordinary. Alyssa has been training to become the first human on Mars since she was just 3 years old. Her fascination with space began early, and she’s spent the last two decades preparing for a journey that could redefine human history and cost her everything familiar.

She’s now part of an elite astronaut training program, undergoing rigorous physical, psychological, and scientific preparation. Her mission, scheduled for 2033, is a one-way trip. That means no return to Earth, just a permanent life on the red planet. The training involves:

Simulations of Mars’ harsh environment

Isolation drills to mimic psychological strain

Studies in astrobiology, her chosen field

Physical conditioning rivaling Olympic athletes

Learning to navigate and survive in a world with no breathable air, no running water, and extreme temperatures.

This mission isn’t just about one person, it’s about the first human presence on another planet, laying the groundwork for future colonization, scientific discovery, and perhaps even interplanetary survival.

Mauro Morandi’s story is one of solitude, devotion, and quiet rebellion against modern life.

In 1989, Mauro set sail from Italy toward Polynesia, seeking escape from consumerism and societal noise. But fate had other plans his catamaran broke down near Budelli Island, a jewel in the Maddalena Archipelago off Sardinia. When he learned the island’s caretaker was retiring, he sold his boat and took over the role himself.

For 33 years, Mauro lived alone on Budelli, surrounded by turquoise waters and the famous Spiaggia Rosa (Pink Beach), whose sand glows with coral and shell fragments. He maintained the island, kept it clean, and educated occasional visitors about its fragile ecosystem. His days were filled with reading, photography, and reflection. “What I love the most is the silence,” he once said.

In 2016, after a legal dispute over the island’s ownership, Budelli was declared part of Maddalena National Park. Park authorities began pressuring Mauro to leave, citing unauthorized modifications to his home and a desire to repurpose the island for environmental education. A public petition to let him stay gathered over 18,000 signatures, but in 2021, Mauro announced he would leave after repeated threats of eviction.

After leaving Budelli, Mauro struggled to adapt to urban life. He moved into a small apartment on La Maddalena and later spent time in a care home following a fall. He passed away in January 2025 at the age of 85, in his hometown of Modena.

Mauro Morandi became known as Italy’s Robinson Crusoe, a symbol of simplicity and resistance to the rush of modernity. His story continues to inspire those who dream of a quieter, more intentional life.

It’s real and it’s wild. The giant golden crowned flying fox, native to the Philippines, is the largest bat in the world, and when it’s hanging upside down, it can look eerily human-sized. With a wingspan stretching up to 5.6 feet (1.7 meters), it’s no wonder people do a double take.

Wingspan: Up to 5.6 feet, about the height of an average adult.

Body length: Only 7 to 11 inches, so the illusion of size comes mostly from those enormous wings.

Diet: 100% fruit figs, leaves, and nectar. Despite its vampire-like appearance, it’s a gentle frugivore.

These bats are endangered, threatened by deforestation and hunting. They play a vital role in seed dispersal and forest regeneration, making them ecological superheroes in disguise.

This story is a beautiful reminder of quiet strength and unconditional love.

In 2015, Abdul Halim al-Attar, a Syrian refugee living in Beirut, was photographed selling pens on the street while cradling his sleeping daughter. He wasn’t begging, just walking through traffic, trying to earn enough to feed his children. That single image, raw and powerful, went viral and sparked a global wave of compassion.

Abdul had fled war-torn Syria with his two children.

With no home, no job, and no safety net, he resorted to selling pens in the scorching heat.

The photo captured his daughter asleep on his shoulder, her trust and peace contrasting with his exhaustion. The image was shared widely.

A crowdfunding campaign raised over $190,000 USD for Abdul and his family.

The funds helped him open three businesses, transforming his life and allowing him to support others in his community. This isn’t just a viral moment, it’s a legacy of hope.

Swedish billionaire Johan Eliasch made headlines in 2005 when he purchased 400,000 acres of Amazon rainforest in Brazil. But this wasn’t a typical land grab, it was a bold move for conservation.

Eliasch acquired the land by purchasing Gethal Amazonias, a Brazilian logging company that owned the territory. Instead of continuing its operations, he shut down all logging and sawmill activities, aiming to protect the rainforest from deforestation.

Eliasch’s goal was to preserve biodiversity and protect carbon sinks vital to the planet’s climate.

He founded the Rainforest Trust, an NGO focused on buying and safeguarding threatened tropical rainforests.

He also co-leads Cool Earth, a nonprofit that supports indigenous communities in rainforest regions to help them combat deforestation.

Eliasch is also known for his work in sports and climate policy:

Served as a special representative to the UK Prime Minister on deforestation and clean energy.

This story is a powerful example of how wealth can be used not just for profit but for planetary protection.

These are the only photos ever taken from the surface of Venus, captured by the Soviet Venera missions, specifically Venera 13 and 14 in the early 1980s.

Surface temperatures reach 465°C (869°F) hot enough to melt lead. The pressure is 90 times that of Earth, equivalent to being 900 meters underwater.

The clouds are made of sulfuric acid, and the air is mostly carbon dioxide.

Venera landers survived only 57 to 127 minutes before being crushed and fried.

The Venera probes used periscope-style cameras protected inside the lander to capture panoramic views of the cracked, desolate terrain.

These missions cost (allegedly $300 Million) hundreds of millions of dollars, and the images they returned are among the most expensive and hard-won photographs in human history.

A yellow-tinted, rocky landscape, eerily quiet and alien. The first color photos from another planet’s surface. A reminder that even in the most hostile corners of our solar system, human curiosity finds a way.
