The Hollow

At first glance, there appears to be little more than an old tree.

But hidden within the hollow is a Torotoroka Scops Owl (Otus madagascariensis), resting almost perfectly camouflaged against the weathered wood.

Its plumage mirrors the colours and textures of the bark so remarkably well that it almost becomes part of the tree itself.

Sometimes the most memorable wildlife encounters are the ones you have to look twice to see.

On the road from Kirindy National Park back to Morondava, the car suddenly became a little more crowded - and a lot more cheerful 😄

Nanah, my guide, asked if two people working at the lodge where I had been staying could join us for the ride to Morondava. We had two empty seats, they were heading the same way, so there really wasn't much to think about.

A small moment from Madagascar that isn't about wildlife, photography or the big experiences - just about the people you meet along the way.

And moments like these are part of the journey too 🇲🇬

Eye to Eye

The fossa (Cryptoprocta ferox) was one of the species I had particularly hoped to photograph during my journey through Madagascar.

Found nowhere else on Earth, the fossa is Madagascar’s largest native carnivore. Its appearance may seem surprisingly cat-like, but it belongs to Madagascar’s unique family of carnivores and is closely related to mongooses.

During this encounter in Kirindy Forest, this individual eventually settled flat against the ground. From my position at the same level, I suddenly found myself staring directly into those extraordinary eyes.

For a few seconds, neither of us seemed particularly interested in looking away.

Echoes in the Mist

The Avenue of the Baobabs is one of Madagascar’s most iconic landscapes - and undoubtedly one of its most photographed.

Arriving before sunrise, I naturally spent time photographing the famous avenue itself. But just away from the familiar view along the road, a quieter scene caught my attention.

Morning mist was still drifting across the landscape, the water lay almost perfectly still, and the silhouettes of the baobabs were reflected beneath the soft colours of the approaching dawn.

Sometimes, photographing an iconic place is not only about capturing the view you came for, but noticing the unexpected scenes unfolding around it.

Stillness in the Canopy

Verreaux’s sifaka (Propithecus verreauxi) is one of Madagascar’s most distinctive lemurs.

They may be best known for their extraordinary sideways leaps across the ground, but the trees are where they truly belong.

Here, a sifaka rests against a trunk in the dry forest of Berenty Reserve. I particularly like how it almost becomes part of the surrounding landscape, while its pale coat still separates it beautifully from the greens and deep shadows of the forest.

Caught in a Glance

Hidden among the branches of Berenty Reserve, a Red-fronted Brown Lemur (Eulemur rufifrons) suddenly turned and looked directly towards me.

Framed by the surrounding vegetation and illuminated by the warm forest light, its amber eyes created one of those fleeting moments of connection that make wildlife photography so special.

A moment later, the forest had reclaimed the scene.

Ancient Eyes 🦎

Madagascar may be famous for its lemurs, but there is an entirely different world waiting among the branches.

This Warty Chameleon (Furcifer verrucosus) remained almost perfectly still, giving me the opportunity to capture the extraordinary textures and patterns covering its head and body.

Endemic to Madagascar, the Warty Chameleon is found in the drier western and southern parts of the island. Up close, there is something almost prehistoric about these remarkable reptiles - particularly that extraordinary eye.

One of the things I love about wildlife photography is looking beyond the obvious. Sometimes the smaller encounters leave just as much of an impression as the animals you travelled halfway around the world hoping to see.

Field Testing Unit #057 - officially in the field⌚🌍

A few days ago, #057 left Oslo on my wrist.

Since then, it has crossed continents, joined me on safari in Kenya and made its way to Madagascar.

Now, here in Berenty Reserve, the Field Testing Unit is starting to live up to its name.

Red earth, dust, heat and long days in the field - with plenty more still to come as the journey continues through Madagascar.

No studio. No controlled conditions.

Just exactly where a Field Testing Unit belongs.

Ferdinand 🌿🇲🇬

Some lemurs leap through the trees. Others dance across the forest floor.

And then there’s Ferdinand…

Perfectly content to sit quietly and stop to smell the flowers 😂

I honestly can’t look at this photograph without thinking of Ferdinand the Bull, sitting peacefully beneath his cork tree and smelling the flowers while all the other bulls were busy fighting and trying to be fierce.

Sometimes, the most memorable wildlife moments are the quiet ones.

"Under Her Watch"

Few animals command attention quite like an African buffalo.

Standing beside this tiny calf in the tall grass of Nairobi National Park, the difference in size was striking. But it was the stare that made the moment — calm, unwavering, and directed straight towards us.

The calf seemed considerably less concerned, even finding time to stick out its tongue.

One small moment of tenderness and attitude beside one of Africa's most formidable animals.
