False Alarm: Siren Testing in Oslo

Many residents have reported hearing air raid sirens (typhoons) across the city recently. The Civil Defence (Sivilforsvaret) confirms that the alarm was triggered by mistake during a technical test.

There is no danger to the public, and no emergency situation has occurred.
In Norway, these sirens are normally tested twice a year (January and June), but today's signal was unintentional. You do not need to take any action or seek shelter.

Winter Serenity at Lørenskog Station.

A crisp February morning at Lørenskog Station, where the historic architecture meets modern commuting in a blanket of fresh snow. The sharp winter sun and deep blue skies offer a picturesque start to the day for local travelers, even as icicles remind us of the freezing temperatures. A perfect snapshot of the quiet beauty found along the tracks today.

Renowned Correspondent Sidsel Wold to Discuss Israel’s Internal Struggles at Deichman Stovner

OSLO – On Tuesday, February 24, at 17:30, veteran NRK correspondent and author Sidsel Wold will visit Deichman Stovner for a special "Bokbad" event. Wold will provide a deeper look into the complex political and social landscape of Israel based on her latest work.

The event, titled "Det var en gang: Bokbad med Sidsel Wold," centers on her book, Israel: Et land i kamp med seg selv (Israel: A Country at War with Itself). Drawing on her extensive experience living and working in the Middle East, Wold explores the deep-seated internal conflicts, religious tensions, and political shifts that continue to divide the Israeli population.

A Career Defined by the Middle East
Sidsel Wold is one of Norway’s most prominent foreign correspondents. Having served multiple terms as the Middle East correspondent for NRK, she has spent decades reporting from the heart of the region. Her work is characterized by a commitment to bringing human stories to the forefront of geopolitical reporting, earning her several prestigious journalism awards.

Understanding the Internal Divide
While international news often focuses on the external conflicts involving Israel, Wold’s lecture aims to shed light on the "battle within". She will analyze how different segments of Israeli society envision the future of the state.

According to the event description, the book provides a unique insight into Israel's history, politics, and the internal conflicts that characterize the country today. For readers seeking a nuanced understanding of the region beyond the daily headlines, Wold’s insights offer a valuable historical and social context.

Transport: Cheaper tickets and new rules in 2026!

Are you confused by your Ruter app lately? You’re not alone. Here is everything you need to know about getting around Oslo right now.

1. Price Drop!
The 2026 state budget has officially kicked in, and monthly tickets in Oslo have actually decreased by about 100 NOK. This is part of a national effort to get more people out of cars and onto the T-bane.

2. The Digital Upgrade
Notice some delays on the Metro (T-bane)? The system is currently undergoing a massive digital signaling upgrade. It’s a "short-term pain for long-term gain" situation—this will eventually allow for more frequent departures.

3. Zero-Emission Zones
Oslo is moving fast toward becoming the first city with zero-emission zones. If you drive a fossil-fuel car, keep an eye on the inner city signs; new restrictions are being analyzed for implementation this year.

Oslo Now Word of the Day: Beboerparkering = Resident parking. If you live in a district like Frogner or Sagene, make sure you’ve applied for this, or parking will cost you a fortune!

What do you think of the new ticket prices? Let us know in the comments!

Learn Norwegian at Deichman’s Language Cafés

You can learn Norwegian for free at several libraries in Oslo—thanks to Deichman’s language cafés. For many years now, Deichman has been hosting places where people of all backgrounds and skill levels can practice speaking Norwegian in an informal, friendly setting.

The concept is simple and warm: it’s set up like a cozy café, with light refreshments such as coffee and cake served while you chat and learn.

Grouped by Language Level
Participants are divided into small groups based on how confident they feel about their Norwegian skills. This way, you’ll be surrounded by others at a similar level, making it easier to learn and engage in conversation.

Weekly Topics to Spark Dialogue
Every gathering features a specific topic chosen to encourage discussion and inspire everyone to speak more freely. It could be anything from daily life and traditions to favorite foods or current events.

Whether you're just starting out or already have some Norwegian under your belt, Deichman offers a relaxed and social way to grow your skills.
