Media Yeroo is a news report social media platform established in October 2016. The main audiences are from Ethiopia. It also has significant number of audiences from the Horn of Africa, the Middle East and the west in general. The aim of Media Yeroo is to contribute in the effort to diversify the media landscape in Ethiopia. Currently, the ruling party controls the media and uses it as its own.
Both print and broadcast are used as propaganda machines by the regime. The small number of private media outlets are mostly in English and Amharic. So, there is a need to bring in various perspectives and provide the people with alternatives and end the regime’s monopoly of the media. One of the tools that can help in the process of democratization is the media and the ruling party’s relentless crackdown on private media speaks volumes…
All the online and satellite media targeting Ethiopian are from abroad and mostly affiliated with opposition political parties. And most of these belong to the same political group and promote views of this group only. Compared to the huge number of Oromo audiences in and outside Ethiopia, media in Afaan Oromo has a long way to go. This platform is mainly established to reach to the Oromo speaking peoples in Afaan Oromo. Thus, we kindly ask Media Yeroo’s audiences to support its effort by all means possible.
