"Vibe coding" is a super recent term, popping up around February 2025, thanks to the buzz around really smart AI that can write code. Think of it like telling an AI in plain English what software you want, and it just vibes out the code for you!
Recently, as AI for coding got way better (using things called Large Language Models), people started realizing you could describe what you need instead of writing every single line yourself. Computer scientist Andrej Karpathy really highlighted this idea, saying the "hottest new programming language is English." Now, some folks are even using just their voice to tell the AI what to do! It's still very new, but some startups are already using AI to generate most of their code.
In simple language: Imagine you have a super smart assistant who knows how to build with code. Instead of learning all the complicated rules of coding, you just tell the assistant what you want – like "make a website with a picture of a cat and a button that meows." The AI then writes the code to make that happen. The "vibe" part means you're focusing on the feeling and function you want, and the AI figures out the technical stuff. Sometimes, people using vibe coding might even use the code the AI makes without fully understanding how it works – they just trust the "vibe" that it's doing what they asked.
