Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday rejected calls for holding elections amid the ongoing war with Russia, warning that such a move would amount to a “tsunami” capable of splitting the nation and ultimately destroying it.

Responding to a recent demand by ousted former Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov, Zelenskyy told reporters that elections during active conflict represent a “huge risk,” adding, “If we want to destroy the country, then we can move in the direction of elections during these times of war.” Ukrainian law prohibits national votes under martial law, and the president insisted his priority remains ending the war while safeguarding the country’s independence and sovereignty.

Police have named the five young men killed when a Volkswagen Passat drove the wrong way along the A66 near Middlesbrough and smashed into a marked Cleveland Police vehicle in the early hours of Saturday.

The victims in the Passat were Michael Robert Cahill, 23, Jacob Matusiak, 23, Makai Saddington, 18, Theo Rae, 17, and Cole Robert Worthy, 16. All five died at the scene.
Also killed were PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38, who were travelling in the correct direction in an armed response vehicle when the collision happened at around 3.39am near South Bank.

A total of seven people lost their lives. Officers had earlier begun pursuing a suspicious vehicle before the fatal crash. The Independent Office for Police Conduct has opened an investigation.
Chief Constable Victoria Fuller described it as an “incredibly sad day for Cleveland,” paying tribute to the two officers as “brave” men who did not return home to their families.
Tributes continue to pour in for all seven victims.

The move responds to President Donald Trump’s new 50% tariffs on about $20 billion of Canadian goods, which took effect at midnight.
Targeted US sectors include steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. Carney said Canada will match the duties “dollar for dollar” to protect Canadian workers and businesses.

It outpaced two fellow Chinese robots to win the heat, with one rival finishing in 9.47s — also under Bolt’s mark.
From 21.50s last year to 9.39s this year. The future just lapped humanity.

Canada will impose retaliatory tariffs on a range of U.S. goods starting September 8 after trade talks with Washington collapsed at the last minute, Prime Minister Mark Carney said Saturday. The move comes in direct response to new 50 percent American tariffs that took effect overnight on roughly $20 billion worth of Canadian exports, including wine, dairy, cement and hockey equipment.

Carney said Ottawa will match the U.S. duties “dollar for dollar,” targeting American steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics in order to protect Canadian workers and businesses. Negotiations have been suspended with no further talks scheduled.

Iran’s top security chief Mohsen Rezaei has warned neighboring countries: Join the US “economic war” against Tehran and you’ll be treated as an enemy.
Rezaei vowed Iran will strike their interests, block all oil exports from the Gulf and Strait of Hormuz, and hit alternative routes. “Not a single drop of oil will leave,” he said, promising “earthquake-like” retaliation if the US escalates further.
Tensions in the region just spiked.

Russian forces launched fresh strikes across Ukraine, killing at least six people just one day after a brutal double-tap drone attack on a packed shopping complex in Kryvyi Rih — President Zelenskyy’s hometown — left multiple dead and over 100 injured, including children.
The latest wave of drone and missile strikes hit civilian areas, adding to the mounting toll as rescuers continue searching rubble from Friday’s assault on the Soniachna Halereia mall.

Zelenskyy has condemned the attacks as “cynical and despicable,” calling the shopping centre strike a deliberate double-tap targeting emergency responders.
Civilians continue to bear the brunt of Russia’s intensified aerial campaign.
