Former Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli has defended the Mahakali Treaty, saying it was made in Nepal’s interest.

The treaty was signed on February 12, 1996, by Nepal’s then-Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and India’s Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao. It covers the integrated development of the Mahakali River, including the Sarada and Tanakpur barrages and the Pancheshwar Project.

Under the agreement, Nepal received specified water and electricity benefits, while Nepal and India agreed to jointly develop Pancheshwar and share its costs and benefits.

Oli’s CPN-UML supported the treaty’s parliamentary ratification at the time.
