At 26, Pasang Gyaljen Sherpa is taking on a new responsibility in mountaineering this autumn season 2026 as one of the youngest members of the rope-fixing team on Mount Manaslu (8,163m), the world’s eighth-highest peak.

Originally from Sankhuwasabha district, Pasang sees this assignment as a new chapter in his six-year mountaineering journey. His career has taken him from working as a base-camp barista to becoming a climber, climbing guide, photographer, and now a member of the rope-fixing team.

Pasang has already climbed Mount Everest (Sagarmatha) three times, Ama Dablam twice and several other peaks, including Himlung Himal. But joining Manaslu’s rope-fixing team for the first time has given him a new opportunity.

Nepal has issued climbing permits to 539 climbers from 66 countries for nine peaks during the autumn season 2026, with Mount Manaslu receiving the highest number of permits.

According to the Department of Tourism, the figures recorded as of September 16, 2026, show that 401 of the permitted climbers are male and 138 are female. Mount Manaslu (8,163m) has received the highest number of permits, with 480 climbers, including 354 males and 126 females.

Meanwhile, three climbers have received permits for Mount Makalu (8,463m), all of them male. For Danga (6,220m), the Department has issued 16 permits, including 14 for male climbers and two for female climbers.

Similarly, 19 climbers have received permits for Dhaulagiri-I (8,167m), comprising 12 males and seven females. Two climbers have received permits for Ganggapurna West (Lachanel) (7,140m), while seven climbers have obtained permits for Thorong Peak (6,144m), including four males and three females.

The Department of Tourism has also issued permits to two male climbers for Norbu Khang (6,085m), four male climbers for Annapurna-IV (7,525m), and six male climbers for Chamlang (7,321m).

Among the 66 participating countries, China has the highest number of climbers with 115, followed by Russia with 53, the United States with 39, France with 34, the United Kingdom with 28, and Germany and Japan with 16 each.

The Nepal government has collected US$1,480,943 in climbing royalties from the permits issued for the nine peaks.

Nepal has issued climbing permits to 513 climbers from 63 countries for six peaks during the autumn season 2026.

According to the Department of Tourism, the figures, recorded as of September 14, 2026, show that 377 of the permitted climbers are male and 136 are female.

Mount Manaslu (8,163m) remains the most popular peak, with 466 permits issued—342 men and 124 women. Three male climbers have also received permits for Mount Makalu (8,463m).

For Danga (6,220m), the Department has issued 16 permits, including 14 for male climbers and two for female climbers. Similarly, 19 climbers have received permits for Dhaulagiri-I (8,167m), comprising 12 males and seven females.

Although he has years of experience in climbing and guiding, fixing ropes and preparing the route for other climbers is different from his previous work. “My mother’s relatives and my uncles are all involved in mountaineering. My elder brother is also in this field. I was inspired by them to enter the mountaineering field,” Pasang said.

He entered the mountaineering industry in 2021. He began his career working at base camps, starting with Tag Nepal Pvt Ltd in 2021. He then worked as a barista at the base camp with Elite Expeditions during the 2022 and 2023.

Since 2024, he has been working with Satori Adventures Pvt Ltd as a climbing guide and photographer. His transition from base-camp work to climbing and guiding happened within a relatively short period. Now, his involvement in the Manaslu rope-fixing team is giving him another opportunity to expand his skills and learn from experienced climbers.

Pasang shared working with the team has been a valuable learning experience and that the support of his senior teammates has made the work easier.

“So far, opening the route on Manaslu has not been too difficult. The senior members of the team are very experienced, strong and supportive. I am getting the opportunity to learn a lot by working alongside them,” Pasang said.

For Pasang, rope fixing is more than simply placing fixed lines on the mountain. The work involves preparing a route that allows climbers to move more safely toward higher camps and eventually the summit.

While he is familiar with climbing, guiding and photography, this is his first experience taking part in the team responsible for preparing the route. He sees the responsibility as both a challenge and an opportunity to gain new experience.

Pasang completed his education up to Grade-12. For now, Pasang has no fixed plans for what comes next. He says he will continue working in the field and decide his future based on how things develop.

“I haven’t decided what I will do in the future yet. I have been working in this field and things are going well so far. I don’t know what the future will bring. Let’s see," he said.
