Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have escalated again after Pakistan carried out overnight airstrikes in Afghanistan, with Kabul reporting civilian casualties and Islamabad saying the attacks targeted militant hideouts.

Afghanistan’s Taliban government said strikes in Helmand and Kunar provinces killed nine women and children and wounded 11 other civilians. Pakistan’s Ministry of Information, however, said the strikes targeted militant camps and that initial reports indicated 22 militants were killed.

The casualty claims from both sides could not be independently verified. Pakistan accuses Afghanistan of allowing militants, including the Pakistani Taliban (TTP), to operate from its territory. Kabul denies the allegation and says it does not provide safe haven to militants.

The latest strikes come amid repeated cross-border clashes and rising tensions between the two neighbors.

US President Donald Trump announced Wednesday $200 billion in South Korean energy investments, including $54 billion for a long-mooted Alaska LNG project that Seoul said had yet to be decided on.
South Korea had previously agreed to invest $350 billion in the United States and increase purchases of US energy under a July 2025 trade deal with Trump that set 15 percent tariffs on imports from the East Asian nation.
Besides the Alaska LNG project and pipeline, the Trump administration announced a $22.3 billion natural gas-fired power project in Texas that would be backed by South Korea.
"The United States and Korea have agreed to commence working together on the 50 Billion Dollar ALASKA LNG PROJECT," Trump wrote on his Truth Social account Thursday, Seoul time.
"A huge 22 Billion Dollar, 6.4-gigawatt Natural Gas Fired Power Project in Encinal, Texas. This will bring tremendous new, reliable Power Capacity to Texas," he added.
The facility in Texas will provide 6,472 MW of energy to data centers also located in Encinal, a US Commerce Department statement said. It is expected to come fully online by 2032.
Seoul confirmed Thursday that both sides intended to "proceed with a $22.3 billion natural gas power facility" in Texas, dedicated to "supplying power to co-located data centers."
But it said the Alaska LNG project "will be considered on the condition that it is commercially viable and subject to relevant domestic legal procedures."
"No decision has been made regarding whether to invest in the project or the scale of any potential investment," South Korea's trade ministry said in a statement.
- Commercial viability -
President Lee Jae Myung also said Thursday that Seoul would begin working on it on the "condition that 1) its commercial viability is confirmed and 2) it complies with South Korea's legal procedures."
Lee said last month that negotiations on the projects had been "very complex and difficult," adding he had found some terms "difficult to accept" without elaborating further.
Beyond the Alaska and Texas projects, Trump said the two countries were "moving forward" with a $120 billion nuclear power programme to build eight large-scale reactors in the United States.
The figure includes $100 billion for construction costs and $20 billion in contingency reserves, the US Commerce Department said.
Lee said Thursday that the nuclear power project would likewise depend on the "commercial viability" of each individual reactor.
The projects in the US will be "pursued in a manner that serves the national interest," South Korea's trade ministry said.
The Alaska project, led by New York- and Houston-based developer Glenfarne Group, envisions an 800-mile (1,300-kilometer) pipeline carrying North Slope gas to a liquefaction facility near Anchorage for export to Asia.
While Alaska has decades of history as a petroleum producer, environmental concerns have historically constrained some developments.
But the Trump administration has largely brushed aside those concerns, canceling regulations to reduce emissions that are blamed for global warming.
Trump's industrial ramp-up envisioned for his widespread energy projects faces a potential labor shortfall, experts say.
The United States needs to fill an estimated 1.7 million skilled trade openings through 2035, according to a report released Wednesday by the Alliance for America's Skilled Trades, an organization of Ford, Blackstone, Nvidia and other large companies.
The report found today's training programs produce just 55 workers for every 100 needed.

Sri Lanka is set to receive $110 million in World Bank financing to repair and rebuild 600 kilometres of roads badly damaged by Cyclone Ditwah.

The funding will focus on restoring access to markets, schools and health facilities in communities worst affected by the cyclone. The rebuilt roads will include climate-resilient features such as improved drainage, landslide protection and upgraded engineering standards.

The project is expected to directly benefit more than 830,000 people and reach nearly 2 million people across eight districts. It is also projected to create about 5,671 jobs in reconstruction and maintenance and reconnect nearly 22,000 farmers with markets and supply chains.

Cyclone Ditwah struck Sri Lanka in November 2025, causing an estimated $4.1 billion in damage and affecting nearly 2 million people.

The United States has completed the withdrawal of its remaining troops from Iraq, bringing the Iraq-based phase of Operation Inherent Resolve to an end after more than a decade of the anti-ISIS campaign.

US President Donald Trump described the withdrawal as a victory for both the United States and Iraq, saying the mission to defeat ISIS had been completed. US Central Command confirmed that American forces and equipment had departed Erbil Air Base, marking the end of the operation in Iraq.

Trump also praised Iraqi Prime Minister Ali Faleh al-Zaidi, saying he had supported and endorsed him from the beginning. The coalition mission against ISIS will continue from Jordan, while US forces remain involved in counter-ISIS operations in Syria.

British Prime Minister Andy Burnham has said there are “strong indications” that Iran was involved in a security incident near RAF Fairford in southwest England. The incident occurred early Sunday when three white vans were reportedly seen heading toward the military base, with a local resident also reporting masked men nearby.

Five British men were arrested on suspicion of explosives and terrorism offences but were later released on bail. Police said no explosives were found after a three-day investigation, although a quantity of petrol was recovered from the vehicles.

Burnham said authorities had now confirmed their belief that Iran played a part, while stressing that the investigation remains ongoing. Iran has strongly rejected the allegation, with Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi dismissing Burnham’s comments.

Bangladesh Ready to Strengthen Ties With India

Bangladesh Parliament Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni has said Bangladesh is ready to further strengthen relations with India if its “big neighbour” extends a hand toward improving bilateral ties.

Speaking to ANI, Moni said Dhaka wants relations with New Delhi to be based on equality, sovereignty, mutual respect and understanding.

He also said Bangladesh is reviewing 101 agreements and memorandums of understanding with India. According to Moni, the objective is not to scrap the agreements but to address provisions that may not serve Bangladesh’s interests and work toward a “win-win” outcome for both countries.

India, meanwhile, has said it has not received any official communication from Dhaka about the review and that it will take necessary steps to protect its interests.

Flash Floods Hit Cambodia, Thousands Evacuated

Heavy rainfall has triggered flash floods across Cambodia, affecting 44,889 families and forcing 3,685 families to evacuate to safer, higher ground, disaster authorities said Monday.

Floodwaters have affected 10 provinces, damaging or inundating 40,384 homes and 49,925 hectares of rice paddies. Battambang, Banteay Meanchey and Siem Reap are among the worst-hit areas.

Authorities say the flooding is mainly caused by intense local rainfall. Cambodia is also experiencing widespread rain, thunderstorms and strong winds through September 30 due to weather systems associated with Typhoon Surigae.

US President Donald Trump offered China the opportunity to buy American weapons during discussions with Chinese President Xi Jinping, according to US Ambassador to China David Perdue. The comments come amid long-running tensions over US arms sales to Taiwan, which China considers part of its territory. Washington says its arms sales are intended to support Taiwan’s defense. Trump had previously suggested that weapons sales to Taiwan could also become a negotiating tool in talks with Beijing.

After years of development, delays and explosive test flights, SpaceX’s Starship is set to make a major attempt to reach Earth orbit today—a crucial step toward Elon Musk’s ambitions for future missions to the Moon and Mars.

The 14th test flight is scheduled to launch from Texas at 7:15 a.m. local time (1215 GMT) and is expected to last around 10 hours. If everything goes according to plan, the spacecraft will reach an orbit about 275 km above Earth, traveling at nearly 28,000 km/h, before deploying 26 next-generation Starlink satellites.

The mission will then see Starship orbit Earth six times before ending its journey in the Pacific Ocean. Its Super Heavy booster is expected to fall into the Gulf of Mexico.

China has called for greater international cooperation, peace and multilateralism as Vice President Han Zheng addressed the 81st UN General Assembly in New York.

Han said China is ready to work with countries around the world to build what Beijing describes as a “community with a shared future for humanity,” amid geopolitical conflicts, widening development gaps and growing global challenges.

He outlined four priorities: protecting the postwar international order and pursuing peace through dialogue; promoting global development and reducing inequality; encouraging dialogue among civilizations; and strengthening multilateralism and the role of the United Nations.

Han also highlighted China's four global initiatives proposed under President Xi Jinping—the Global Development Initiative, Global Security Initiative, Global Civilization Initiative and Global Governance Initiative—as part of China's approach to international cooperation.

The speech came during the UN's 81st General Assembly, whose 2026 theme is “Restoring Trust, Managing Transformation: A United Nations That Delivers for All.”
