HISTORY OF TATTOO IN NEPAL

Tattoos have a long and rich cultural history in Nepal. Traditional tattooing in Nepal is known as "Godna" or "Mehendi," and it has been practiced for centuries by different ethnic groups in the country.

Godna is a form of body art that involves intricate patterns and designs made using natural dyes. These tattoos are usually done during special occasions, ceremonies, or festivals as a way to celebrate cultural events and rites of passage. The designs often hold symbolic meanings and reflect the wearer's identity, beliefs, and life events.

In recent years, modern tattooing with tattoo machines has also become popular in Nepal, especially in urban areas. Tattoo studios can be found in major cities like Kathmandu and Pokhara, catering to both locals and tourists.

It's important to remember that tattoos, especially those with cultural significance, should be approached with respect and understanding of their meaning in Nepalese culture. If you're considering getting a tattoo in Nepal, it's a good idea to research the traditional designs and meanings beforehand and find a reputable artist who can help you navigate the cultural aspects of the art form.

Beside this, in urban cities like Kathmandu, Pokhara, and Dharan in the early 90s, small gangs were formed under the influence of Western culture from Hollywood and Bollywood. In Nepal, local gang members used to get tattoos resembling their gang name “KHUDA,” which represents a sharp, flat metal weapon.

“A ‘khuda’ gang member is sharing his story alongside his tattoo. He also has an old traditional GODNA tattoo, which is poked, along with some modern machine-made tattoos.”

“Still, he has got some of his old friends who have also got the same tattoo, and some had already covered up!!!”
