If I had to fail as a video editor, these are exactly the things I’d do:

Never follow a mentor. Figure everything out on your own. Why learn in months when you can struggle for years?
Practice once or twice, then quit. If you’re not great by your third attempt, editing clearly isn’t for you.
Copy nobody’s style and study no one’s work. Real editors don’t need references, right?
Skip the fundamentals and jump straight into flashy transitions. Who needs pacing, storytelling, or sound design when you have a cool zoom effect?
Never ask for feedback. Assume every edit you make is perfect. Criticism is obviously only for people who need to improve.

Sounds ridiculous, right?

But these are some of the exact habits that keep editors stuck.

Learn from people ahead of you. Practice consistently. Study great work. Master the fundamentals. And most importantly, get feedback.

That’s how you actually get better.

Learn video editing in weeks, not years.

You don’t need to spend months watching random tutorials. Start with the basics and practice consistently.

Day 1: Install your editing software and get familiar with the workspace.

Day 2: Learn how to import and export videos, audio, and images.

Day 3: Learn the basics of cutting and trimming.

Day 4: Learn how to add captions.

Day 5: Learn how to add music.

Day 6: Learn how to add sound effects.

Day 7: Put everything together and edit one complete video from start to finish.

Do this consistently, and you’ll be surprised by how quickly you can go from knowing nothing to actually editing videos.
