Shocked and saddened to hear of the passing of Olie Bassweight.

I didn't know Olie well, but many years ago he brought me to Wellington to play. He took really good care of me and he made it fun right from the moment I got to the airport and found he had booked my plane tickets under the title Professor ..

"Good afternoon, Professor."

"Welcome aboard, Professor."

Both ways.

He sniggered when I mentioned it on arrival, and it was a memorable start to a fun weekend.

Love and sympathy to his family and all who knew him better than I did.

If you're in a position to help, please consider donating to help give Olie a dignified and unique send-off.

It’s the first Bandcamp Friday for 2024 and the last chapter of Bulletproof Remasters is here. Now is probably the best time to thank everyone involved in making this project happen, as it really was a team effort. Thanks first of all to Evan Kiljoy for the incredible remastering efforts, Josh Lees for selecting the tracks, Ollie Cern for the graphics and Jamie Lees Photography for the photos of the DATs, Luke Orphan for spending MANY hours extracting audio from a bunch of DATs that were in HIGHLY variable condition, Joost Langeveld at Bigpop Studios who allowed us to endanger the working condition of his DAT machine with said DATs .. Damian Christie for writing the main text for the Bandcamp page, Jeff Psidream Malcolm for pointing us to a folder of original WAV files we didn’t know existed, everyone in the group chat who provided valuable input and laughs. And of course the artists and labels who kindly granted us permission to re-release their music or music from their labels .. Kemal and Rob Data , Ben Sumner @ Industry Recordings, Sean Rymetyme @ 1210 Recordings, and Gabi Holmes on behalf of Edd Optiv (RIP). Obviously it’s bittersweet, but we are glad we could get this project completed for Jay. Would Jay be humbled? Not really his style. But I think he would be pretty stoked, or maybe at least as one of the team put it recently - “he would be stoked he got us to do all this for free!”. I have never ever ever seen a local lineup this huge EVER.

If you're in Auckland tomorrow night, I'd like to (respectfully) put it to you that you'd be an absolute fool (again, respectfully) to miss this!

Come and celebrate the life and legacy of our brother Jay Bulletproof with us.

It's set to be an epic musical sendoff, with all proceeds going to Jay's family at this difficult time.

Like so many others all around the world, I lost a friend the other day.

Over the 23 years that I knew him Jay Bulletproof was many things to me .. including (but not limited to) an inspiration, a collaborator, a mentor, a radio co-presenter, a grumpy flatmate, an occasional source of frustration, frequent source of loud goofy laughter and most importantly, a friend.

I have come to learn over the last few days that over that entire 23 years, it seems there has never been even one respectable photo taken of us together, 100% of them are seemingly all goofy like this one, which in a way is actually perfect.

Recently, I was happy to hear that Jay had started making drum and bass again. He was loving it!

After so many reinventions and forays into different styles of music, he had been reunited with his first musical love.

Without a doubt it was creating his History of New Zealand Drum and Bass podcast and revisiting all those memories with old friends that had really re-ignited his passion and it was so cool to see.

Jay was the happiest I’d ever known him to be, and that’s all any of us want for the people in our lives.

We talked about making some new music but sadly never got to do it.

There is one last unreleased track from the two of us though, and I know for a fact that Jay would want you to have it.

We started it quuuuuite some time ago and it was reasonably close to ‘finished’.

One more day probably would have done it.

Sometimes we all wish for one more day, or one more conversation, just one more moment.

I’ve been listening to it a lot over the last few days.

I thought about adding more to it, but it’s more meaningful to me to leave it where it was, to freeze that moment in time - just two friends jamming on some kinda emo vibes on a hazy summer afternoon with no real goal other than making music together.
(And maybe getting lightly smashed. But in an extremely classy way. Probably.)

Our friend Evan Kiljoy has kindly mastered it, and I’ve given it a title.
