The Light Traffic Index (LTI) eased 0.2% in November and is 3.3% higher than a year ago. The Heavy Traffic Index (HTI) eased 0.1% in the month, and is up 0.9% y/y.

Light traffic (motorbikes, cars and vans) is generally a good indicator of the state of demand, as opposed to production. It typically provides up to a six-month lead on momentum in the economy, with variation reflecting discretionary spending on outings, movement of couriers and tradespeople etc.

The economy does look like it is turning the corner after a rocky ride since last year’s sharp recession. The evidence of green shoots has been a bit more obvious in some areas lately. We expect growth will pick up to hit an above annual trend pace of 2.5+% growth over 2026 as better cashflows start to leak out of people’s wallets.

It is providing a limited window of time for those drivers to re-sit the relevant tests.

As we approach Christmas, the usual ramp up in supply chain activity is well underway. Truck movements are up, ports are busy, the ferries are full…the seasonal bump is upon us.

Road freight association Ia Ara Aotearoa Transporting New Zealand is recommending transport operators prepare for random roadside drug testing, which is gradually being rolled out across New Zealand from mid-December.

A recent amendment to the Land Transport Act gives Police similar powers to random breath tests, by requiring drivers to undergo a saliva test to check for the presence of four illicit drugs.

November was another challenging month for the New Zealand new truck and trailer market.

A total of 279 new truck registrations for the month sees the market well behind the 532 registrations recorded in the same month in 2024.

As we approach the end of the year, I want to reflect on the progress we have made together. When I stepped into this role, I emphasised the importance of taking a steady, considered approach and that building trust, listening carefully, and understanding the goals of government would be essential if we are to shift the dial for road transport.

A highlight for me last week was participating in the Institute of Road Transport Engineers of New Zealand (IRTENZ) conference.

I presented some of my learnings from the HVTT18 conference and had the privilege of chairing some sessions and panels.

Auckland Transport (AT) is continuing to tackle congestion as a network-wide solution to the city’s traffic problems. They are now seeking public feedback on three more projects, having recently opened feedback on a dynamic lane proposal for Park Road in Grafton.

Proposals for special vehicle lanes are now live for Green Lane West in Greenlane, an important section of Great South Road in Papatoetoe, and the intersection at the start of Onewa Road’s T3 lane in Birkenhead.
