🇳🇿 New to New Zealand? Start Preparing for Your Job Search from Day One
One of the most common questions I get from students arriving in New Zealand is, “How can I find a suitable job?”
My first advice is simple. Don’t wait until you desperately need a job before you start preparing. Start from day one.
Finding a job in New Zealand is not only about sending hundreds of applications. You need to understand how the local job market works and prepare yourself properly.
✅ Get your CV ready for the New Zealand market
Your CV should be clear, professional, and relevant to the position you are applying for. Don’t use the same CV for every job. Adjust it according to the role and highlight the skills and experience that are relevant to that employer.
✅ Build a strong LinkedIn profile
LinkedIn is extremely important in New Zealand. Complete your profile properly, connect with people in your industry, follow companies you would like to work for, and start building your professional network.
Don’t message people simply asking, “Do you have a job for me?” Build genuine connections and have professional conversations.
✅ Use more than just SEEK
SEEK is a great platform, but don’t depend only on SEEK. Look at Trade Me Jobs, LinkedIn, recruitment agencies, and company career pages as well.
Many opportunities can also come through your network.
✅ Quality applications are better than quantity
Applying for 50 jobs with the same CV may not get you anywhere. Five carefully selected applications, with a CV tailored to each position, can sometimes be much more effective.
✅ Be realistic about your first job
Your first job in New Zealand may not be your dream job, and that is completely fine.
Sometimes the first opportunity is simply your entry point into the New Zealand workforce. Once you gain local experience, references, confidence, and connections, more opportunities can open up.
I have personally seen people enter companies in one position and later move into completely different professional roles through internal opportunities.
✅ Work on your communication and interview skills
Qualifications and experience are important, but employers are also looking at how you communicate, how you present yourself, your attitude, and whether you will fit into their team.
Practice speaking confidently about your experience and what value you can bring to an employer.
✅ Start networking before you graduate
If you are studying in New Zealand, don’t wait until your course finishes to start thinking about your career.
Attend industry events, connect with professionals, speak with lecturers, meet people, research companies, and understand what employers in your field are looking for.
Most importantly, don’t become discouraged by rejection.
You may apply for many positions before getting the right opportunity. Every application and every interview teaches you something.
Your goal should not simply be to “find any job.”
Your goal should be to get into the New Zealand workforce, gain local experience, build your network, prove yourself, and gradually move towards the career you want.
Come prepared, stay positive, keep improving, and create your own opportunities. 🇳🇿💪
