๐บ The Woman Who Saved TV History on 71,000 VHS Tapes
While most people taped their favorite shows, Marion Stokes taped everything.
Starting in 1979, the former librarian and activist noticed something troubling โ TV stations erased old programs to save money, wiping history clean. She decided to fight back the only way she could: by recording nonstop.
For 35 years, Marion ran as many as eight VCRs at once, capturing news, commercials, sitcoms, and politics โ 24/7. Her family even helped swap tapes when she couldnโt. By the time she died in 2012, she had filled 71,000 VHS tapes, preserving over 300,000 hours of television history.
Now, the Internet Archive is digitizing her lifeโs work, making it freely available. Thanks to Marion, the world has a record that no one โ not even the most powerful โ can erase.
