This is me, 17 years young(only a month after I turned 17..so basically 16), holding my son, who I just learned I was having a week before.
You could say I'm the OG story of:
"I didn't know I was pregnant " π€£
This is my story:
Rewind to 2010...
I grew up athletic, scattered periods due to intense sports. Then I stopped sports and starting hanging out with really cool people- lots of drinking, smoking ci******es and pot.
My periods were never normal and I put on a little weight, thinking it was just all the bad choices and lazing around.
But on the long weekend in June, I made my mum drive me to hospital at midnight thinking my kidneys were failing.
It was an hour drive to the nearest hospital so on the way my mother thought "it really sounds like contractions you're having...maybe it's like an early pregnancy labour or something?"
We get to the emergency and demand I p*e in a cup to test if I'm pregnant so we could rule that out.
I do the test. We wait no more than 10 minutes. Then chaos.
Nurses and doctors to my side, they lay me down and lift up my shirt, my stomach looks like a box(from my abs not separating).
They start strapping heart monitors to my stomach, an IV in my arm.
A nurse tells me she needs to check my cervics.
Someone yells "the hearts in the wrong place"
Then the nurse: "She's 4cm dilated. We need to get her to the maternity ward NOW."
*Keep in mind I'm a teenager. This lingo is a foreign language to me! What are you checking? Who's heart what? Dilated? Where am I going?*
They start rolling my bed to the nearest elevator, the nurse gives me the gas to breath on when I'm having contractions.
A young male nurse takes me into the elevator with my mom by my side. He's beaming with light and SO excited he's "helping" with a birth.
I, on the other hand, in pain, pi**ed off he's so happy and trying to make sense in my head what is going on... And trying to stop saying f**k so much.
We get to the birthing suite. They put me on the bed. Tell me to lay down and strap my feet up on these holders.
So many doctors and nurses, it's 2am, they tell us the midwife is on the way.
Turning to my mum I say "I feel hot"
She tells me I'm covered in sweat.
I think "f**k this is so gross!" (REMEMBER: teenager brain)
The midwife arrives. Arms covered in tattoos, she sits at the end of the bed and demands I not push for the next few contractions.
I tell her to f**k off.
She stays.
I don't push.
She then breaks my waters..so much water!
Then I push 3x and boom, onto my chest.
The first thing I say to my mom is "omg it looks like dad"
Hearing that would have been so weird for the hospital staffπ€£π€£
I get asked if I want to breastfeed.
Hell no.
They give me one small blue pill.
My mom steps out of the room to make a call:
"Congrats dear, you're a grandpa!"
___
I spend the next 3 days in hospital getting visited by my mum, dad and sisters.
Not sure what to do, I fill out adoption forms.
How could I take care of a baby?
No father. Just me. At 17? No way!
On the 3rd day my parents present me with the most selfless act : they will adopt him.
I then thought of the future and didn't want to be his "sister" that one day found out I'm really his mother...so I stepped up- with my parents support, love and help.
My dad told his work people and word spread across our little town. We returned to our home and in the lounge was everything we needed to raise this miracle child.
I returned to school, 5 days after giving birth. 5 days.
On the 6th was a choir competition I simply could not miss.
That's the photos you see. Look how little I am!
My mom helped me and we drove 2 hours north with a newborn so I could sing. - WILD!
At 9, the love of my life came into our life's and filled a gap I never knew would be filled. He stepped up in a way few will understand. My son now has a dad, and I thank God everyday for this amazing man he brought me.
*FUN FACT* My husband was part of the choir I was in. He held him when he was a week old, unknowing that 9 years later he would become the love of my life...but that's a different story π
Now, my son is 15. Fit, strong, healthy, talented, funny, caring and I couldn't imagine my life without him. π
